Why do you keep books in the bathroom?
"Do you think that keeping books in the same place where you go to do poopoo, is respectful?" queried my 9-year-old grandson.

Should leaders lead, from the front or the rear?
There cannot be one solution to fit all situations. However, there are historical lessons from which we can learn.
Watch the video to get some perspectives from my own experience.
First, What does a leader do?
Second, What is the answer to this question?

Men are Nutty, Women are Fruity
Are males more tough or females?
In terms of, physical strength and stamina, the male is typically tougher.
Humans have succeeded not only because of our brawn but also our intellectual, emotional and spiritual capacity.
In terms of emotional and psychological toughness, females are much superior and more sophisticated than males.
Toughness is to be ruthless, about taking and implementing difficult and unpleasant but necessary decisions. The willingness to suffer in the short term to benefit in the longer term.

All sport is simulation of hunting and war
To the uninformed, the behaviour of sportspersons and their supporters appears crazy. However, there is a manner to the madness.
Instinctive hunting behaviour remains deeply ingrained within us and needs expression. Sport caters to that instinct of both the individual hunter and the pack of hunters, which is deeply satisfying and keeps us healthy.
if we want to improve our life skills, cater to our primal instincts, forge long-lasting friendships and enjoy life, we need to take up and participate in sports.

Humans are social animals who band together in cohesive groups called tribes or communities. To survive as Hunter-Gatherers we humans have foraged and hunted for food and protection.
However, we have become modern and increasingly urban. We get our food from the local bazzar and don't have to hunt for it. Nor do we have to bear arms to fight off other tribes/groups and wild animals.
But the instinctive hunting behaviour remains deeply ingrained within us and needs expression.
Sport caters to that instinct of both the individual hunter and the pack of hunters.
Hunting involves one or several features such as strategising, planning, training, chasing, aiming, shooting, grappling, etc.
Let us take the case of soccer. There is a group of hunters in this case it is a team of footballers. They take a weapon called a ball which they pass to one another and then aim to shoot it into a goal. They do this all whilst fighting off the challenges and great odds hurled at them by the opposing team. In a metaphorical manner of speaking, each team is trying to overwhelm even destroy the other.
At the end of the game, the winning team gets a cup, symbolic of the kill. This is the prize which they take back to their tribe with great pomp and joy. Then the whole tribe feasts and drowns in revelry.
To the uninformed, the behaviour of sportspersons (the hunters) and their supporters appears crazy. The whole tribe (represented by fans and supporters) goes into a frenzy, before and during the confrontation. The tribe members don the uniform (jersey etc) and regalia of their team to show their support and commitment. They sing their unique song and chant their special mantra.
There is a manner to the madness.
These warriors who win or participate can be feted, showered with gifts and fame, and attract the best mates. The tribe simply adores them.
Players generally retain good physical and emotional health. They live happier lives despite the injuries they sustain, and the investment they make in time and money. In addition, the social bonds that get built up between players facilitate collaboration between them ensuring success in life.
Not surprisingly, successful communities have a rich tradition in sports. As sports become more popular, the entire community begins to play and socialise. Strangely these acts of war unite people and help them to collectively succeed.
if we want to improve our life skills, cater to our primal instincts, forge long-lasting friendships and enjoy life, we need to take up and participate in sports.

Committees like all tools are powerful. If wielded properly committees can be useful and highly effective.
Why are committees necessary?
Committee means entrusting matters to some persons to achieve a desired outcome.
No individual can know everything, nor can devote time to think about all matters.
Committees can be of several kinds. A committee can be a small group of people who examine challenges, situations and problems and recommend solutions on behalf of all members of an organisation.
In many cases committees do not simply recommend, they also manage. Meaning they plan, direct, staff, deploy, coordinate and control resources to achieve certain desired goals.
Committees work on the principle that many heads are better than one. Hoping that there will be less nepotism, and corruption and higher quality of decisions and actions.
In my previous article, 'Committees, the most effective way to do nothing'
I pointed out the problems with committees and why they tend to be dysfunctional. Take the example of the construction of three European cathedrals, which took more than 500 years to build simply because of using committees. There were simply too many people involved in decision making and hence the plans and strategy kept on changing. Cologne Cathedral took 632 years to build (1248 - 1880), St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague took 585 years (1344~1929), and Milan Cathedral took 579 Years (1386~1965). History is replete with such examples.
How then to make committees effective?
It is best when the committee and its members are responsible both for making recommendations for evolving solutions and also for delivering results.
The challenge arises when people who have no stake in the outcomes or are far removed from the reality of the challenge make recommendations that are ineffective even regressive. Stakeholders, that is people affected by the decisions participate in the committee both in formulating and in managing.
Committees are excellent for getting a particular outcome. When it appears many people were involved the public believes it must be right.
In reality, it is what a few individuals game the committee proceedings. They manipulate and manage the majority of the committee (who are mostly disinterested or incompetent) to vote or act in a particular manner. This is called 'group think' where everyone believes someone else is doing the thinking and so just gives their assent to decisions without thinking. Before we know it everyone goes with the group and we have very bad or unsatisfactory outcomes.
The smaller the number of people in a committee the faster it moves to decide and give effect to decisions. The greater the number of members in a committee, the slower and more sluggish the pace of deliberation, decision making and taking action. Quality also suffers.
The problem with committees is that they follow a process, but are usually not accountable for outcomes.
Sometimes the committee members break down into semantics and focus on behaviour rather than on desired results. As a result committee, the committee fails to deliver on outcomes.
Every individual is unique. Each is full of quirks, biases, individual mannerisms and style. If we focus on obtaining desired results rather than on behaviour, desired outcomes are easier to achieve.
I almost always adopt what is called a task force approach. A task force for delivering an outcome that is specific, measurable, timebound and within a budget.
To give effect to a task force, a task leader is elected, chosen or assigned a task. He or she then chooses a team from within the group that agrees to support him or her in the achievement of that task. They work out the mechanism of their teamwork and each team member has smaller tasks within the overall task goal.
I believe that 'What is not reviewed is not done' so progress is reviewed periodically with corrections, and modifications if any being made to remain on track to achieve the goal.
Voila! The task force approach performs well and inevitably they achieve the desired outcome, often exceeding their expectations.
There is also the possibility that occasionally the task force is not able to deliver the desired outcome. In that case review the task expectations, the leadership, the team members, available resources etc. and either abandon the task or make necessary changes and try again. When individuals are clear about their responsibility and are well supported, it is rare for them to fail unless the leadership is corrupt, insincere or grossly incompetent.
An African proverb says, "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together."
Committees bring us closer and help us achieve what we want, provided we hold the committee responsible for the outcomes. This is the way to go far in the right direction.

Art is an emotion, not an object
When we look at something objectively we use the mind. The mind feels nothing for it's a cold analytical thing. Art touches our being, and that is a matter of the heart.
Matters of the heart cannot be understood, merely experienced.

Third Places enhance the 'Quality of Life'
The first place is where people reside, at their homes, the second place is where people go to work, and the third place is where people go to socialise.
Communities vitally need venues where people can meet in a neutral environment and in an informal manner for individuals to socialise. Such a venue we could call a 'third place.'
Third Places build strong and resilient communities, and that is the bedrock of a strong, tolerant, peaceful, healthy, vibrant, civilised world. And that is the best legacy we can leave our children.

Are we Transforming or Transacting?
Followers Transact and Leaders Transform
Change is always initiated and driven by transformers but affected by transactors. Transformers possess an infectious self-confidence, energy and drive.
Perpetual transformation can be chaotic and stressful but it need not be. Since ancient times we have had available science and now management tools and techniques to achieve transformation and yet provide satisfaction and enjoyment.

There are two types of people, followers and leaders.
What differentiates them?
Fundamentally, 'Followers Transact and Leaders Transform'.
'Transformers' are prime movers, the people who visualise, conceptualise and generate the intellectual, material and emotional power and energy to bring about quantum change. All others can be classified as 'Followers' (Transactors).
Leadership is situational. For example, one may be a great professional at work or social situations and a disaster in guiding their own family. Sometimes they are effective at home and in social settings but not professionally.
Transactors are people who just undertake tasks and commit actions, with little or no knowledge of what they do and why, functioning in a mechanical thoughtless way. Good Transactors guided by norms are essential and can be effective in running any show.
Transactors sometimes follow leaders, and sometimes they follow traditions even institutionalised thousands of years ago like in a religion, society or dynasty. In essence, followers, follow what is decided by others on how and what is to be thought, spoken and action to be taken. This is the wheel of life for many.
A person may be an employee and merely transact but as the head of a family or group may be a powerful and effective transformer. Family members may also be transformers.
Just because a person is in a senior position in an organisation or even head of a family, does not mean he or she will transform anything, they may only be transacting.
Every society and organisation needs about 5% transformers and 95% transactors.
Change is always initiated and driven by transformers but affected by transactors.
Transformers possess an infectious self-confidence, energy and drive.
A point to note is that no one is a constant transformer or a transactor all the time. Leaders also transact but this is secondary to the transformation that they achieve. Similarly, transactors also affect some amount of transformation, but these generally tend to be minor or insignificant.
If a transactor gets into a position of great responsibility even like a Prime Minister or President he or she is unlikely to achieve transformation. Then decline even collapse is likely.
Such people can be identified by their endless tinkering disguising activity for meaningful action.
"It is not the strongest of the species, that survive nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change" ~ Charles Darwin
In every organisation or relationship even with a couple or a family, someone drives transformation and others transact.
Perpetual transformation can be chaotic and stressful but it need not be. Since ancient times we have had available science and now management tools and techniques to achieve transformation and yet provide satisfaction and enjoyment. A good life is one filled with transactions and times of rest interspersed with doses of transformation.
It's important to ask ourselves, 'Am I appropriately transforming personally, socially and professionally?' If we are not transforming we are not living only existing.

When all is lost, all is found.
If we panic when in trouble, life can be like a drowning person struggling to survive but it will usually be in vain. Frantic struggling drains our strength eventually taking us down under.
After all efforts had failed, I and my ego, surrendered to something infinitely greater than myself. Most people call that power 'God', 'Waheguru', 'Param-Atma' etc. Just like an exhausted child snuggles into the arms and embrace of a loving parent, I felt carefree and unconcerned about current and future situations.
Then something miraculous happened, my mind began to be unburdened and my energy levels began to rise. I was able to think more clearly. Instead of reacting, I began to respond, and that too positively.
While retaining my convictions and sanity, I just abandoned the struggle. Did it mean, the problems went away? No, I just learned to cope.
Gradually sinking, when I hit rock bottom I realised that the only way is up. Left for dead or finished, I discovered I had begun to float.
Today, materially I am just a fraction of my former self, but emotionally and spiritually I have blossomed. The reason is not difficult to see, I awoke to the Guru's message 'All has to be first lost, before we are found'.

Without authority its difficult to fulfil responsibilities.
When assigning a responsibility to anyone, we have to ensure that the senior who is assigning the responsibilities to the subordinate grants authority of an appropriate level so as to enable juniors to deliver on their responsibilities.
Failure to grant authority to juniors usually results in poor results

Ever so often we discover that people are entrusted with a responsibility but lack the authority to get things done. On the other hand it is also common to witness people who have seized or inherited authority but carry no responsibilities.
When assigning a responsibility to anyone, we have to ensure that the senior who is assigning the responsibilities to the subordinate grants authority of an appropriate level so as to enable juniors to deliver on their responsibilities.
Most organisations typically appoint people outlining their responsibilities without specifying the authorities being granted to meet their responsibilities.
It is important to remember that - Responsibility without authority is impotence, and an impotent person cannot perform satisfactorily, if at all. On the other hand Authority without responsibility is dictatorship. A dictator is like a bull in a china shop and that cannot be good either.
Both impotence and dictatorship are not desirable within a functioning organisation. So the solution is to grant adequate and appropriate authority to subordinates.
Authority can be loosely defined as the power granted to a subordinate to appoint, commit, communicate, decide, deliver, spend, etc.
To get best results, bosses should avoid unilaterally bestowing authority upon juniors.
Authority has to be discussed and mutually agreed upon, between both the senior and the subordinate. Of course, the boss's decision should be final.
If we do this, the probability of achieving success and strengthening both the organisation and team members is high.
There is a caveat though.
Not every responsibility and authority needs to be negotiated, as is the case where a person is simply instructed without being held accountable for results.
However as we grow we have to make the shift from merely instructing to delegating and with it the need to empower juniors.
Sure authority can be misused and even be abused, but that cannot be a reason to not authorise people because the vast majority of people really want to do good.
Views and criticism are welcome.

Wonder breaks shackles of Ideology
Wonder is what drives our quest to seek answers and the truth.
However perception is not truth.
Truth acquired second hand is no truth at all, because it is a borrowed truth and tends to make us hollow yet arrogant. We have to acquire our own truth.
First hand truth humbles us, because it reveals the vastness of our ignorance, and therefore fills our being with even greater wonder. This leads us to further awakening and learning.
Knowledge, is learning something new everyday whilst wisdom is to unlearn something everyday.
Keep on wondering, keep on wandering. Thus keep on evolving.

A perspective of our place in the universe
'Who am I?'
'What is my place in the Universe?'
We will never arrive at the answer because the journey is the destination, and that too a fascinating one. The questions not the answers provide meaning to our lives.

Look at this image. It is only part of the middle section of our galaxy known as the Milky Way Galaxy, a relatively small galaxy. Our sun is so small in this galaxy that we cannot see it but its location is marked in the image. What can we conclude from viewing this image.
Our universe has existed for 13.8 billion years, our sun 4.5 billion years and our human species has existed for only 300,000 years. We humans occupy a planet 0.000000000000000000015% the size of one galaxy amongst countless zillions of galaxies.
It's obvious that as individuals and as a species are just an insignificant accumulation of cosmic dust who have got way ahead of ourselves. Its important to realise the insignificance of our time and place in the greater scheme of things.
Acceptance of this perspective will humble us and extinguish all that is toxic and negative with us. Paradoxically, as all that is superficial within us gets extinguished, we are born anew to achieve great things.

When Truth is Unacceptable
Everyone seem to claim a monopoly over the 'Truth.
Unfortunately, everyone's truth is different based on their source of their information, education, experience and conditioning, and driven by individual's fear and greed.
So we have common thinking which we can describe as 'Herd Think'.
If we want to get to the truth don't look at the members of the herd, we must look to who it is that tends to the herd, the herder.
So toxic and wooden headed the herd become that they will resort to boycotts and many forms of abuse and violence against the non conformist. The more a society drifts from the truth the less tolerant they are of those who speak it. This stage in the life of an organisation, society, country, religion or ideology spells the beginning of the rapid decline of that entity.
Many of us are at sometime pricked by our conscience of being truthful in thought and deed, and that is certain to destroy us. If we act as per our conscience we will be swiftly destroyed by the mobs and if we ignore our conscience we will torture ourselves and die bit by bit each day.
That is a dilemma we all face about the Truth.

How do we know there is intelligent life out there?
We know there is intelligent life out there in outer space, because they have never tried to contact us.
In the same vein whatever applies to the wider universe also applies to organisations, who struggle to attract and retain talent.
Many intelligent and talented people stay away from such organisations that pay money and even provide facilities but wrench the soul out of people.
The secret is to establish transformational not transactional relationships.
If we want people to make contact and join with us we need to create relationships that are not purely transactional but also transformational.

Why the Russians have not attacked Zelensky personally?
The billion rouble question is 'Why Russia with all their intelligence networks and precision missile attack capabilities not attacked Zelensky personally?
The reality is that the Russians want Zelensky to stay on as long as possible.
Zelensky provides the Russians their best opportunity of achieving their political and military goals. A corrupt, incompetent charismatic puppet remaining at the helm of Ukraine's government is a gift to the Russians.

'Marriage' is not a word ...
Marriage is probably the most fascinating of relationships.
Those individuals who click together, become lovers, friends, partners, parents even occasional adversaries, and enrich each others lives.
Those who are incompatible experience a hellish life. They become bitter and intolerant people. For such people, 'marriage' is not a word, it's a 'sentence'.
What then could be the perfect bond?

What then could describe a perfect bond?
I can provide two possible answers.
1. 'Soulmate' where two beings are akin intimately as a common soul.
2. The other comes from Indian philosophy since ancient times, 'Ardh-Angani'. Literally translated other half of body but actually implies other half of the being. We each live half in the other.
Incidentally, this pair bond has its origins in Sanatana philosophy which explains the nature of all existence, the word 'Param-Atma' meaning primordial or supreme soul.
The term 'Param-Atma' is used to describe the supreme being we commonly know as God. Each individual being is a soul, a small fragment of that one Universe.
We are all one and if fortunate one day we will realise this great truth.
Does power corrupt?
There is this perception that 'power corrupts'. This is simply not true. Power does not corrupt even though it seems to corrupt.
Permit me to quote someone who knows something about power, A' braham Lincoln' the former president of the United States of America. It is reported that he once remarked “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power."
Power does not corrupt it simply allows people to drop the mask, the pretences that disguise who or what they truly are and what they really stand for.
Power simply magnifies. Thus good people appear better and bad people appear worse. This is why corrupt people who acquire appear as if power has corrupted them whereas the fact is that it is a case of a corrupt person having acquired power.
Only a great person can withstand the burden of prosperity and power. ___________

Foreigners never ruled India
Foreigners be they Persian, Turkic, Afghan or European have relied heavily on Indians themselves to fight for and administer over the majority of Indians. These Indians not only ruled over they participated actively in the plunder and pillaging of India whilst simultaneously working to ravage India's education, economy, culture and civilisation.
Transcript:
Invading foreigners were as compared to native Indian forces relatively always very weak in force and numbers, yet they prevailed and plundered.
For example at the height of British occupation of an undivided India in 1947 (population of 400 million) Britain had only 1600 British officers in the Indian Civil Service and a mere 40,000 British soldiers to govern. This was made possible by the significant number of Indian soldiers and administrators, who served regimes irrespective of who sat on the throne.
India was soldiered by, policed by, administered by, taxed by and exploited by Indians themselves on behalf of foreigners enriching and empowering both foreigners and themselves.
Earlier the exploitation by this powerful lobby of Indians was blatantly open and chauvinistic. Though their grip has weakened these anti India forces are even today still entrenched within the Indian system. The exploitation and attempted destruction of India is sinister in its intent and sophisticated in its approach. This minority but highly toxic group has infiltrated deeply into India's judiciary, politics, academia, intellectual class, business and commerce, science, industry, bureaucracy, media, entertainment, civil society, NGOs and religious institutions.
It appears, historians have not been able to adequately explain some important questions.
* Why did this minority of Indians so eagerly serve the foreigners remains an enigma?
* Was it only for the material benefits power and wealth?
* Why abandon the service of Indian rulers and communities to serve foreigners with such commitment?
* Why did the majority Indian population submit so easily and why were those who resisted not actively supported by the majority?
It is high time we stopped blaming others and accept responsibility for our own weaknesses and blunders.
Distasteful as it may often be, it is essential for all people everywhere to revisit and learn from our past, so that we may improve. Studying history written by conquerors about their conquests will never reveal the truth. Indians need to study their own history analysed from the Indian perspective.
Introspect what it means to be really free in mind and spirit for freedom is not just the ability to vote once in 5 years, nor a mere slogan.
What is my hope for India?
India a pre-eminent benign world. Prosperous, strong, resilient, wise, powerful and fearless feared by evil forces and whose friends adore and respect her.
I send greetings to you all for this Indian Independence Day.
Jay Hind

Ukraine Fatigue after its failed counter offensive
Denying, impoverishing and destroying people and civilisations in the name of some obscure higher good is the oldest scam in the world.
So it is with the Ukrainian conflict. Money goes from the taxes of people to the arms industry and their related businesses through the lawmakers in the name of saving a collapsing Ukraine. Doing everything except talk to find a solution.

Ukraine is the pawn of the West. If it succeeds in the conflict, the West will get a defeated Russia on a platter. If Ukraine fails it would still result in a degraded and indebted Russia which will become an easier picking sometime in the near future.
Ukraine is being destroyed, its infrastructure wrecked and its people fleeing the land. The much vaunted Counteroffensive over 67 days has yielded nothing inspite of the death of over 43,000 and injured countless more trained men and the loss of 3814 pieces of major equipment. The Ukrainians have so far failed to cross even the grey zone (an area before the first of three layers of the Russian defences).
Everyone loves a winner and despises a loser. The rising despair amongst the leadership and people in the West bearing the brunt of the staggering costs of supporting the Ukraine conflict is causing 'Ukraine Fatigue'. Zelensky is trapped from all sides, the cajoling American led West prodding him, the unrelenting Russian forces in front and with hardcore rightwing extremists (Neo Nazi) within his army and government threatening to kill him and his team should the Zelensky regime even consider some form of 'off ramp' (an exit solution) to the conflict.
Zelensky the puppet to secure his position and ill-gotten wealth and that of his coterie has thrust Ukraine towards unnecessary destruction and death.
As the prospects of Ukrainian victory dim and the Russians advance further West and South something has to give, the world will soon witness a resolution to the conflict. It will either be a peaceful one, if saner minds prevail, or we will see an escalation by the West. Escalation will most likely lead to a global conflict which will damage and consume our world so badly that the previous world wars will pale in comparison.
I wonder why we call them superpowers, if all they seem to do is push the world on a path of exploitation and destruction?

A Manager is not a Delivery Boy
A manager's job is to manage.
However many people particularly those who rise through the ranks, think to become a manager is the epitome of success. They do not have to really work, but simply show up and lord over minions. This is not good for individual and organisational performance.

The myth about Power and Authority
The myth about power and authority.
Leaders often live with the myth that they have power and exert authority.
Authority is seen to be a top down phenomenon. That is not true.
Authority is granted upwards but executed downwards.
Authority flows from the subject to the power.

Use annual appraisals to motivate & promote a meritocracy
We humans are happy with what we receive, until we compare it with what someone else receives. When a transparent and fair methodology is adopted there is greater acceptance for the difference in rewards. This is why appraisal systems have to be sensitive to this fact.and be suitably designed.

Annual appraisals can cause lots of demotivation
Appraisals are meant for determining rewards and promotions. It usually turns out to be a nightmare for owners, leaders and managers.
No matter what we do people tend to become unhappy and even angry. This can be highly demotivating and counterproductive.
Why is this so?
Here I explain why and offer a solution.
