Think Clearly, Live Fully
People who have been brainwashed to hate and have only disdain for others become blind to reality. This false sense of superiority renders such people incapable of thinking clearly.
About 2,500 years ago Lao Tzu the great Chinese philosopher and teacher advised his students:
"Look at the spring, the brooks, the streams, the tributaries, the rivers and the ocean.
By remaining in its lofty position the spring remains small. As it descends it merges with other springs to become a brook."
"Brooks merge to form streams which become tributaries that flow into rivers. Each becomes bigger as it descends."
"The mighty ocean positions itself at the lowest level of all and thus forces all the other bodies of water to empty all they can carry into itself."
It is often said, that 'pride comes before the fall.'
Success, power, strength, beauty, wealth and status are externalities of our being and mistakenly make us proud. The truly great person knows all attributes are mere props to his or her ego. They may possess various qualities but do not depend on them.
Lao Tzu further says;
"The humble are like the mighty ocean, not proud.
Their clear thinking and understanding leads to Nirvana
A confused mind is a place of death
Clear Thinkers do not die.
The confused ones never live."

Rights have to be earned
Rights have to be earned. They are not automatic.
Rights do not come from God.
They are provided by and guaranteed by the State.
These rights are conditional that the citizens fulfil their duties.
Visitors and foreigners are also awarded rights, provided they;
1. respect the customs, beliefs, and the people.
2. obey the laws of the land
3. do not cause any trouble or harm to the native humans and the flora and fauna of the land
4. do not harm or endanger the security and environment of the land and its people.

We have Rights. Don't talk to us about Duties.
"Politicians like to tell citizens that they have rights, and it is they alone who are going to deliver to them these rights.
The State and Society cannot speak for themselves and their rights as easily as an individual or group can. If everyone is only for himself then who is for Society and the State?
A citizen's rights cannot be automatic. Rights have to be earned.
If a person fails in his or her fundamental duties they must forfeit their rights.
Without fulfilling their responsibilities to Society and the State, the individual cannot legally and morally demand rights.

Why Nobel Peace Prize is dead
All things man-made or natural must one day perish. So also it is which institutions which are the living embodiments of human ideals. Great ideas outlast humans even for millennia.
When the institution gets corrupted by human thought and behaviour, failing to live up to its founding beliefs, it will lose its vitality and die.
The Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Barak Obama even before any achievement or to Malalla Yousefzai for being an innocent bystander who got shot is the politicisation of a great institution.
In a sense, the Nobel Peace Prize has lost its virgin purity and become just like any other political organisation.
What a shame.

Man makes the house, Woman makes the home
A house is not the same as a home. A home is a house with a soul.
A house is merely a structure. It caters to the material and security needs of its occupants. Usually, the man builds the house and the woman makes the home. Together they make the family.
The home provides the soul and the spirit from which society and civilisations are fashioned. Good homes produce strong people rich in character. Broken homes produce damaged spouses and broken children, eventually producing a broken society.

Scapegoats - Looking to blame others for our problems.
First, we decide who has to be punished, and then we find the justification.
The results of this election are due on 4th June 2024.
Losers are going to start blaming others or something. Scapegoats are going to be found and figuratively speaking heads will roll. People will lose their authority, and leadership and there will be a lot of screaming and protesting before quieting down.
Finding a scapegoat is a common tendency in humans. To find fault with others and blame them for all misfortune. We never blame ourselves or our actions, it is always someone else's fault. If we can punish the individual, group, religion, community or state we can be relieved and our anger and hurt assuaged.
The practice of scapegoating has its origins in the Bible and with Abraham.
Here is some interesting information.

#Antoine_Magnan #arrogance #Bumble_Bee #knowledge #thinking #perception
Transcript: In 1934, the entomologist Antoine Magnan after a long study of Bumble bees, concluded that the body shape, the size of the wings, the frequency of the flapping of the wings, and as per the vast knowledge of Aerodynamics and Physics known to man the bumble bee should not be able to fly.
This is a classic case. Knowledge is a barrier. It tells us what we cannot do or achieve.
Fortunately, Magnan forgot to impart this knowledge to the bees, so, they kept flying.
All creatures seek to dominate their species. We humans are no different, but we have many other options. We dominate using several ways, beauty, strength, status, etc. Probably, the most impactful is knowledge. The downside is knowledge makes us arrogant, and blinds us.
Where does his arrogance come from?
The knowing man is nothing but a mind, which is nothing but a collection of thoughts and perceptions.
Where do these thoughts come from?
There are two sources, externally generated and internally generated.
External sources are given thoughts, by a process of inception or implantation. These include thoughts given to us by parents, teachers, priests, and leaders. Thoughts come to us from books, mass and social media etc. our friends and associates.
Amassing data and perceptions, education provides us the arrogant feeling of, 'knowing it all'. But all that is external to us is of relatively little value to us, because we have no ownership of this knowledge. It is borrowed knowledge.
Internal sources are thoughts that come from within our being. Thoughts provided by the loud silence of creation. By observing our world and nature, by introspection and meditation. Accepting borrowed knowledge after reflection and contemplation also becomes internal source knowledge.
Our knowledge is limited and our ignorance infinite. Our knowledge bounds us, our ignorance coupled with our imagination produces wonders.

I want you to take a holiday
Prevention is better than cure.
Everyone should go on an annual holiday. This serves several purposes.
1. Employees and bosses both realise that no one is indispensable.
2. The organisation develops solutions to cope with the absence of that team member.
3. If there is any fraud taking place, it will most likely come to light.

Power of accepting blame
We are always blameless, the problem is always some other entity. This denies us any possibility to correct or improve the situation.
Paradoxically when we accept blame, we suddenly become powerful. We acquire the possibility to effect changes.

Men are Nutty, Women are Fruity
Are males more tough or females?
In terms of, physical strength and stamina, the male is typically tougher.
Humans have succeeded not only because of our brawn but also our intellectual, emotional and spiritual capacity.
In terms of emotional and psychological toughness, females are much superior and more sophisticated than males.
Toughness is to be ruthless, about taking and implementing difficult and unpleasant but necessary decisions. The willingness to suffer in the short term to benefit in the longer term.

All sport is simulation of hunting and war
To the uninformed, the behaviour of sportspersons and their supporters appears crazy. However, there is a manner to the madness.
Instinctive hunting behaviour remains deeply ingrained within us and needs expression. Sport caters to that instinct of both the individual hunter and the pack of hunters, which is deeply satisfying and keeps us healthy.
if we want to improve our life skills, cater to our primal instincts, forge long-lasting friendships and enjoy life, we need to take up and participate in sports.

Humans are social animals who band together in cohesive groups called tribes or communities. To survive as Hunter-Gatherers we humans have foraged and hunted for food and protection.
However, we have become modern and increasingly urban. We get our food from the local bazzar and don't have to hunt for it. Nor do we have to bear arms to fight off other tribes/groups and wild animals.
But the instinctive hunting behaviour remains deeply ingrained within us and needs expression.
Sport caters to that instinct of both the individual hunter and the pack of hunters.
Hunting involves one or several features such as strategising, planning, training, chasing, aiming, shooting, grappling, etc.
Let us take the case of soccer. There is a group of hunters in this case it is a team of footballers. They take a weapon called a ball which they pass to one another and then aim to shoot it into a goal. They do this all whilst fighting off the challenges and great odds hurled at them by the opposing team. In a metaphorical manner of speaking, each team is trying to overwhelm even destroy the other.
At the end of the game, the winning team gets a cup, symbolic of the kill. This is the prize which they take back to their tribe with great pomp and joy. Then the whole tribe feasts and drowns in revelry.
To the uninformed, the behaviour of sportspersons (the hunters) and their supporters appears crazy. The whole tribe (represented by fans and supporters) goes into a frenzy, before and during the confrontation. The tribe members don the uniform (jersey etc) and regalia of their team to show their support and commitment. They sing their unique song and chant their special mantra.
There is a manner to the madness.
These warriors who win or participate can be feted, showered with gifts and fame, and attract the best mates. The tribe simply adores them.
Players generally retain good physical and emotional health. They live happier lives despite the injuries they sustain, and the investment they make in time and money. In addition, the social bonds that get built up between players facilitate collaboration between them ensuring success in life.
Not surprisingly, successful communities have a rich tradition in sports. As sports become more popular, the entire community begins to play and socialise. Strangely these acts of war unite people and help them to collectively succeed.
if we want to improve our life skills, cater to our primal instincts, forge long-lasting friendships and enjoy life, we need to take up and participate in sports.

Getting Committees to perform
Committees are excellent for getting a particular outcome. When it appears many people were involved the public believes it must be right.
In reality, it is what a few individuals game the committee proceedings. They manipulate and manage the majority of the committee (who are mostly disinterested or incompetent) to vote or act in a particular manner.
Then how do we get committees to perform?

Transcript:
Committees like all tools are powerful. If wielded properly committees can be useful and highly effective.
Why are committees necessary?
Committee means entrusting matters to some persons to achieve a desired outcome.
No individual can know everything, nor can devote time to think about all matters.
Committees can be of several kinds. A committee can be a small group of people who examine challenges, situations and problems and recommend solutions on behalf of all members of an organisation.
In many cases committees do not simply recommend, they also manage. Meaning they plan, direct, staff, deploy, coordinate and control resources to achieve certain desired goals.
Committees work on the principle that many heads are better than one. Hoping that there will be less nepotism, and corruption and higher quality of decisions and actions.
In my previous article, 'Committees, the most effective way to do nothing'
I pointed out the problems with committees and why they tend to be dysfunctional. Take the example of the construction of three European cathedrals, which took more than 500 years to build simply because of using committees. There were simply too many people involved in decision making and hence the plans and strategy kept on changing. Cologne Cathedral took 632 years to build (1248 - 1880), St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague took 585 years (1344~1929), and Milan Cathedral took 579 Years (1386~1965). History is replete with such examples.
How then to make committees effective?
It is best when the committee and its members are responsible both for making recommendations for evolving solutions and also for delivering results.
The challenge arises when people who have no stake in the outcomes or are far removed from the reality of the challenge make recommendations that are ineffective even regressive. Stakeholders, that is people affected by the decisions participate in the committee both in formulating and in managing.
This is called 'group think' where everyone believes someone else is doing the thinking and so just gives their assent to decisions without thinking. Before we know it everyone goes with the group and we have very bad or unsatisfactory outcomes.
The smaller the number of people in a committee the faster it moves to decide and give effect to decisions. The greater the number of members in a committee, the slower and more sluggish the pace of deliberation, decision making and taking action. Quality also suffers.
The problem with committees is that they follow a process, but are usually not accountable for outcomes.
Sometimes the committee members break down into semantics and focus on behaviour rather than on desired results. As a result committee, the committee fails to deliver on outcomes.
Every individual is unique. Each is full of quirks, biases, individual mannerisms and style. If we focus on obtaining desired results rather than on behaviour, desired outcomes are easier to achieve.
I almost always adopt what is called a task force approach. A task force for delivering an outcome that is specific, measurable, timebound and within a budget.
To give effect to a task force, a task leader is elected, chosen or assigned a task. He or she then chooses a team from within the group that agrees to support him or her in the achievement of that task. They work out the mechanism of their teamwork and each team member has smaller tasks within the overall task goal.
I believe that 'What is not reviewed is not done' so progress is reviewed periodically with corrections, and modifications if any being made to remain on track to achieve the goal.
Voila! The task force approach performs well and inevitably they achieve the desired outcome, often exceeding their expectations.
There is also the possibility that occasionally the task force is not able to deliver the desired outcome. In that case review the task expectations, the leadership, the team members, available resources etc. and either abandon the task or make necessary changes and try again. When individuals are clear about their responsibility and are well supported, it is rare for them to fail unless the leadership is corrupt, insincere or grossly incompetent.
An African proverb says, "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together."
Committees bring us closer and help us achieve what we want, provided we hold the committee responsible for the outcomes. This is the way to go far in the right direction.

Art is an emotion, not an object
When we look at something objectively we use the mind. The mind feels nothing for it's a cold analytical thing. Art touches our being, and that is a matter of the heart.
Matters of the heart cannot be understood, merely experienced.

Third Places enhance the 'Quality of Life'
The first place is where people reside, at their homes, the second place is where people go to work, and the third place is where people go to socialise.
Communities vitally need venues where people can meet in a neutral environment and in an informal manner for individuals to socialise. Such a venue we could call a 'third place.'
Third Places build strong and resilient communities, and that is the bedrock of a strong, tolerant, peaceful, healthy, vibrant, civilised world. And that is the best legacy we can leave our children.

Are we Transforming or Transacting?
Followers Transact and Leaders Transform
Change is always initiated and driven by transformers but affected by transactors. Transformers possess an infectious self-confidence, energy and drive.
Perpetual transformation can be chaotic and stressful but it need not be. Since ancient times we have had available science and now management tools and techniques to achieve transformation and yet provide satisfaction and enjoyment.

There are two types of people, followers and leaders.
What differentiates them?
Fundamentally, 'Followers Transact and Leaders Transform'.
'Transformers' are prime movers, the people who visualise, conceptualise and generate the intellectual, material and emotional power and energy to bring about quantum change. All others can be classified as 'Followers' (Transactors).
Leadership is situational. For example, one may be a great professional at work or social situations and a disaster in guiding their own family. Sometimes they are effective at home and in social settings but not professionally.
Transactors are people who just undertake tasks and commit actions, with little or no knowledge of what they do and why, functioning in a mechanical thoughtless way. Good Transactors guided by norms are essential and can be effective in running any show.
Transactors sometimes follow leaders, and sometimes they follow traditions even institutionalised thousands of years ago like in a religion, society or dynasty. In essence, followers, follow what is decided by others on how and what is to be thought, spoken and action to be taken. This is the wheel of life for many.
A person may be an employee and merely transact but as the head of a family or group may be a powerful and effective transformer. Family members may also be transformers.
Just because a person is in a senior position in an organisation or even head of a family, does not mean he or she will transform anything, they may only be transacting.
Every society and organisation needs about 5% transformers and 95% transactors.
Change is always initiated and driven by transformers but affected by transactors.
Transformers possess an infectious self-confidence, energy and drive.
A point to note is that no one is a constant transformer or a transactor all the time. Leaders also transact but this is secondary to the transformation that they achieve. Similarly, transactors also affect some amount of transformation, but these generally tend to be minor or insignificant.
If a transactor gets into a position of great responsibility even like a Prime Minister or President he or she is unlikely to achieve transformation. Then decline even collapse is likely.
Such people can be identified by their endless tinkering disguising activity for meaningful action.
"It is not the strongest of the species, that survive nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change" ~ Charles Darwin
In every organisation or relationship even with a couple or a family, someone drives transformation and others transact.
Perpetual transformation can be chaotic and stressful but it need not be. Since ancient times we have had available science and now management tools and techniques to achieve transformation and yet provide satisfaction and enjoyment. A good life is one filled with transactions and times of rest interspersed with doses of transformation.
It's important to ask ourselves, 'Am I appropriately transforming personally, socially and professionally?' If we are not transforming we are not living only existing.

When all is lost, all is found.
If we panic when in trouble, life can be like a drowning person struggling to survive but it will usually be in vain. Frantic struggling drains our strength eventually taking us down under.
After all efforts had failed, I and my ego, surrendered to something infinitely greater than myself. Most people call that power 'God', 'Waheguru', 'Param-Atma' etc. Just like an exhausted child snuggles into the arms and embrace of a loving parent, I felt carefree and unconcerned about current and future situations.
Then something miraculous happened, my mind began to be unburdened and my energy levels began to rise. I was able to think more clearly. Instead of reacting, I began to respond, and that too positively.
While retaining my convictions and sanity, I just abandoned the struggle. Did it mean, the problems went away? No, I just learned to cope.
Gradually sinking, when I hit rock bottom I realised that the only way is up. Left for dead or finished, I discovered I had begun to float.
Today, materially I am just a fraction of my former self, but emotionally and spiritually I have blossomed. The reason is not difficult to see, I awoke to the Guru's message 'All has to be first lost, before we are found'.

Without authority its difficult to fulfil responsibilities.
When assigning a responsibility to anyone, we have to ensure that the senior who is assigning the responsibilities to the subordinate grants authority of an appropriate level so as to enable juniors to deliver on their responsibilities.
Failure to grant authority to juniors usually results in poor results

Ever so often we discover that people are entrusted with a responsibility but lack the authority to get things done. On the other hand it is also common to witness people who have seized or inherited authority but carry no responsibilities.
When assigning a responsibility to anyone, we have to ensure that the senior who is assigning the responsibilities to the subordinate grants authority of an appropriate level so as to enable juniors to deliver on their responsibilities.
Most organisations typically appoint people outlining their responsibilities without specifying the authorities being granted to meet their responsibilities.
It is important to remember that - Responsibility without authority is impotence, and an impotent person cannot perform satisfactorily, if at all. On the other hand Authority without responsibility is dictatorship. A dictator is like a bull in a china shop and that cannot be good either.
Both impotence and dictatorship are not desirable within a functioning organisation. So the solution is to grant adequate and appropriate authority to subordinates.
Authority can be loosely defined as the power granted to a subordinate to appoint, commit, communicate, decide, deliver, spend, etc.
To get best results, bosses should avoid unilaterally bestowing authority upon juniors.
Authority has to be discussed and mutually agreed upon, between both the senior and the subordinate. Of course, the boss's decision should be final.
If we do this, the probability of achieving success and strengthening both the organisation and team members is high.
There is a caveat though.
Not every responsibility and authority needs to be negotiated, as is the case where a person is simply instructed without being held accountable for results.
However as we grow we have to make the shift from merely instructing to delegating and with it the need to empower juniors.
Sure authority can be misused and even be abused, but that cannot be a reason to not authorise people because the vast majority of people really want to do good.
Views and criticism are welcome.

Wonder breaks shackles of Ideology
Wonder is what drives our quest to seek answers and the truth.
However perception is not truth.
Truth acquired second hand is no truth at all, because it is a borrowed truth and tends to make us hollow yet arrogant. We have to acquire our own truth.
First hand truth humbles us, because it reveals the vastness of our ignorance, and therefore fills our being with even greater wonder. This leads us to further awakening and learning.
Knowledge, is learning something new everyday whilst wisdom is to unlearn something everyday.
Keep on wondering, keep on wandering. Thus keep on evolving.

A perspective of our place in the universe
'Who am I?'
'What is my place in the Universe?'
We will never arrive at the answer because the journey is the destination, and that too a fascinating one. The questions not the answers provide meaning to our lives.

Look at this image. It is only part of the middle section of our galaxy known as the Milky Way Galaxy, a relatively small galaxy. Our sun is so small in this galaxy that we cannot see it but its location is marked in the image. What can we conclude from viewing this image.
Our universe has existed for 13.8 billion years, our sun 4.5 billion years and our human species has existed for only 300,000 years. We humans occupy a planet 0.000000000000000000015% the size of one galaxy amongst countless zillions of galaxies.
It's obvious that as individuals and as a species are just an insignificant accumulation of cosmic dust who have got way ahead of ourselves. Its important to realise the insignificance of our time and place in the greater scheme of things.
Acceptance of this perspective will humble us and extinguish all that is toxic and negative with us. Paradoxically, as all that is superficial within us gets extinguished, we are born anew to achieve great things.
Get a perspective
