I like to share with my followers what it's like to be in on my biweekly student calls. During these sessions, we might discuss an important, relevant topic in health, or answer Q&As from our students. The three-legged stool is an important idea. They make up the keys to WHY so many Americans are ill, sick, and suffering these days. The video I've made will give you more details, but just briefly, here are the 3️⃣ legs: Leg 1️⃣ : Our genes. Once, we thought genes were our destiny. Now, we have disproved that through the field of study of epigenetics, which shows us that bad genes can actually be turned OFF. Leg 2️⃣ : Stressors. Physical, chemical, and emotional forms of stress are all around us. These stressors turn on the bad genes from Leg 1 of the stool! Leg 3️⃣ : Our microbiome. We need a certain makeup of bacteria in our gut to be truly healthy. The gut is called our "second brain" and holds around 80% of our immune system. I don’t know about all of you, but it brings me comfort to know why something happened; I like to know the reason behind things, especially as it relates to health. That’s why I love using the bucket theory to explain why health fails - it’s a clear representation of the reason why, and it goes a little something like this... Imagine for a moment that our bodies are buckets, and, much like us, these buckets are all different. Some are big, some are small...but they all have a set capacity, and a point where they will overflow. 🌊 🌊 🌊 Now imagine that the toxins ☠️ we encounter everyday - in our environment, the air we breathe, water we drink, chemicals we come in contact with, medications we take, fillings in our teeth - are the water that fills our “buckets.” We each have a different capacity, genetically (remember, big and small buckets!), to handle these toxins, but repeated exposure leads to a build up that needs to be emptied or it will overflow. I talk a lot about the importance of the microbiome, and the microbes living within our digestive tracts. Maintaining a balance of “good” and “bad” bacteria is imperative for good health. A key player in helping to maintain this balance is our stomach acid, which acts as a gatekeeper to ensure that harmful bacteria doesn’t take up residence in our stomachs or intestines. 🙅‍♂️ When someone has low stomach acid, or hypochlorhydria, not only are they unable to properly digest their food (which can lead to nutrient deficiencies), they’re at greater risk of developing GI tract infections, gastritis, leaky gut, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (known as SIBO), stomach ulcers, and heartburn. 😟 Unmanaged stress and older age are two big causes of low stomach acid, as is the overuse of antacids and PPIs. An unhealthy diet full of processed, refined food and alcohol is also a major factor, as it contributes to stomach inflammation and dysfunction. A person with low stomach acid may experience symptoms like bloating, diarrhea, gas, nausea, and heartburn 🔥, or notice undigested food in their stool. ➡️ To correct the problem, focus on eating a whole food, nutrient dense diet that includes bitter greens (like spinach, kale, dandelion, arugula, etc.), manage stress, chew food slowly (around 30 chews per bite is ideal!), and consider adding diluted apple cider vinegar to the diet. ⬅️

I've been in practice quite a while now. Through seeing thousands of patients, reviewing tons and tons of bloodwork...there's one nutrient that honestly, people really never have.
