After a restless night being bitten by no-see-um bugs I continue hiking towards the northwest point of Flamenco Peninsula as I search for water along the way but the search becomes desperate as the sources I had counted on turn up dry.

This region of the Mojave National Preserve in California contains several volcanic cinder cones that were still active 10,000 years ago. Bear crawling is the only way to climb up due to the steep slopes covered with loose cinders. The view from the top is spectacular!

Not as cold as my plunge into a glacial pool in Alaska but still a withheld experience. Numbness and shivers followed as I allowed myself to air dry on the beach. The water is super shallow, too shallow to swim.

Gremio vs. Cruzeiro
There's nothing quite like attending a soccer game in Brazil. The energy in the stadium is like lightning. The fans' enthusiasm for their team is so strong that they aren't allowed to mix with the other team's fans, or violence may erupt. This was my first time attending a Brazilian soccer game and it happened at Governor Magalhaes Pinto Stadium in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Surfing at Recreio dos Bandeirantes, RIO de JANEIRO
It's a lot of fun getting tossed around in the waves at this paradisal beach guarded by a huge towering rock sitting majestically in the middle of a long extension of soft white sand. This is my friend Henrique's playground. In fact, Recreio dos Bandeirantes translates to "Adventurers' Playground". What an appropriate place for me to try out surfing for the first time.

Amazing Hiking and Camping on Ilha Grande in Brazil (Big Island)
Ilha Grande in the state of Rio de Janeiro is one of the most beautiful pristine destinations in Brazil. It is easily accessible by a quick one-hour ferry ride from Angra dos Reis. There are no vehicles on the island so be prepared to hike or boat your way around. Whatever your means, it is well worth the trip. The natural beauty is breathtaking. There are camping spots along the way as well as several tiny villages, many with a restaurant or two. Be prepared to see and hear lots of wildlife from several species of monkeys and birds to armadillos and lots of sea life under the water.

Survival How to eat barrel cactus fruit in the wild
The bright yellow fruit of the fishhook barrel cactus (Ferocactus wislizeni) ripens between the months of November and March. This cactus is found in hot, arid deserts from southern Arizona to Texas and in northern Mexico in the Sonoran Desert. The edible fruit is acidic in taste but juicy enough to satisfy the palate. The black seeds are crunchy and nutritious as well. The cactus is named for the distinctive curved shape of the thorns that resemble fish hooks. Another name for this cactus is "compass barrel cactus" because of its tendency to lean southward.

Let's talk about eating wild grass
The cool rainy months bring forth lots of young tender grasses. In the southwest of the U.S. the hillsides and valleys turn green with young grass sprouts during the winter and spring rains, even in some areas of the deserts. During a camping trip at Catalina State Park in Arizona I had the priviledge to eat wild, fresh, green grasses daily. Grass is an excellent source of chlorophyll and essential vitamins and minerals. Grass that grows in the earth and receives natural sunlight is far richer in nutrients than grasses grown in trays under artificial lighting for the purpose of juicing. If you think you may want to start adding grass to your diet or just want to store away the knowledge for a hiking adventure or survival situation, then watch and enjoy this video.

Survival! Eating raw jumbie beans (guajes) on Snake Island
Leucaena (leadtree) is commonly found in warm subtropical locations around the world. Originally from Mexico, it has naturalized in many places including the islands of the Caribbean.... Jumbie beans (known as 'guajes' in Spanish, are the seeds found in the pods. When green the unripe seeds can be eaten raw. Some say they are toxic. Historically they have been eaten raw by people for centuries, including myself. The seeds are commonly used in Mexican cooking... The fact is that little research has been done on the nutritional and medicinal uses of jumbie beans however preliminary studies indicate that they are highly nutritious and possess useful medicinal properties as well. As for me, I will continue to enjoy them as a nutritious wild edible food on all my future adventures.

Survival! Eating Opuntia (prickly pear) cactus on Snake Island
fter hiking several days and living mostly on coconuts, finding a fresh ripe prickly pear cactus fruit really makes my taste buds go wild!... Known as "tuna" in Spanish, Opuntia cactus are thought to have originated in Mexico and later spread throughout the Americas... The fruit of this particularly species is tangy and sweet with lots of dark red juice that will temporarily stain your skin... Opuntia fruit is a good source of vitamin-C and magnesium... When harvesting handle the fruit carefully to avoid getting the tiny spines in your skin as these will be an irritant for several hours, and then carefully remove these spines with a knife, rag or flame.

Amazon Jungle Camping Adventure on the Urubu River
I had the opportunity to fulfill a lifetime wish of visiting and exploring the Amazon. I arranged a two-day, two-night tour with Amazon Antonio Jungle Tours and myself along with five guys from Denmark traveled by boat from the lodge up the Urubu River and then we hiked on foot for the following two days carrying all our gear, camping primitively and sleeping in hammocks under the tree canopy.... We observed wildlife such as elusive spider monkeys, noisy macaws and huge creepy tarantulas.... Super high humidity and heat kept us in a constant sweat but cool freshwater streams provided much needed relief.... Our guides introduced us to several species of trees and plants with important medicinal properties.... Thanks to our guides and Amazon Antonio Jungle Tours for a amazing experience!

Catching Caimans in the Amazon
Caimans are common in the Amazon. During my stay at Amazon Antonio's Lodge in Amazonas our guide, Jungle James, took us out one night on the Urubu River to spot caimans. Armed with flashlights we got in a canoe and silently glided through the water in the flooded forest in search of these elusive creatures. Here's what we found and learned.

1000 Mosquito Bites! How to prevent mosquito and no-see-um bug bites
The great outdoors is great for adventure and getting away from it all, and unfortunately also home to great quantities of biting insects such as mosquitoes and no-see-um bugs (also called biting midges or chaquistes in Spanish). I've had over 1000 bites on my body in a single day and it is a living hell. Mosquito and no-see-um bugs are the one thing that can turn a great camping trip into a torturous prison, and that prison is a human body that can't escape the extreme itching sensation. But an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. After years of suffering mosquito attacks I finally found a couple of safe and effective ways to prevent those ferocious bites. Watch and try them for yourself. Please subscribe and leave comments below. I do a lot of wilderness travel and will be sharing more and more.

(7.5 miles) a otra cascada hermosa llamada La Conchuda.
