Largest Gold Bar In The World (1889) 434 Pounds
Largest Gold Bar In The World (1889) 434 Pounds
Sept. 3rd, 1889 The largest Gold bar in the world was poured in Helena Montana.
The U.S. Assay Office, Helena Montana poured the bar.
U.S. Assay Office funding approved by congress of 1874. Broke ground in 1875.
U.S. Assay Office Helena opened in 1877 and closed in1934.
Bar was poured for Colonel Charles A. Broadwater and the Montana National Bank.
Was poured to promote Montana and the rich mineral resources that were being mined here.
Also to bring attention to real estate, the future Fort Harrison, hospitality, railroad, banking and the many opportunities in this new state.
Montana became a State in 1889.
Colonel Broadwater had just opened his Broadwater Hotel & Natatorium 8 - days before this gold bar was poured.
Bar was engraved with “Montana” on the front and shipped to the Minneapolis Industrial Exposition for display, then to the Chase National Bank in New York City.
Believed bar was melted down by Nov. of 1889 to be sold off in more manageable sizes. Montana National Bank got its money transferred back to them from the value of the gold bar. This money transfer happened the end of Oct. 1889.
Bar at the time was worth over $ 100,000.00
Bar currently would be worth over 14 - Million Dollars. Bar weighed 434 Pounds or 6,945 ounces.

Mount Helena, Helena Montana # whyhelenamt
Mount Helena, Helena Montana
Lets take a hike up a mountain. One of the larger city parks in the USA.
Mount Helena City Park is a 620-acre park in Helena, Montana. The park includes Mount Helena, which is 5,468 feet above sea level. The park has hiking and mountain biking trails that offer views of the mountain.
The history of Mount Helena is well documented. In 1864, four gold miners discovered gold in Last Chance Gulch. The heavily timbered slopes of Mount Helena provided wood for buildings and other mining activities. Livestock also grazed on the lower slopes.
The community assumed that the mountain remained in public domain because there was a lack of settlement-related developments. The mountain has been used for communal and celebratory events throughout Helena's history.
The 1906 Trail is a well-designed trail that offers the easiest and most direct route to the top of the mountain. It follows the base of the limestone cliffs and passes the Devils Kitchen.

Gold Rush Mansions Of Helena Montana
Gold Rush Mansions Of Helena Montana
Helena Montana was born in the gold rush of 1864. She was named the Queen City in the late 1800s, when more millionaires lived here, per capita, than anywhere in the USA. The Montana Club here in Helena, with its exclusive brotherhood of men who were millionaires, registered 140 members.

This video, is just to wet the appetite. Tons of history here. From Pharmacist, bankers, ranchers, politicians, shipping, railroad, businessmen, hospitality, mine operators/managers, lawyers, physicians, all and so much more represented in these homes. Some even coming up on steamboat to Fort Benton and teams of oxen over to Helena. Most of the bricks were from Helena, some of the granite and stone was also from Helena. The Railroad was used extensively once in place for mostly shipping from the East to Helena.

This video follows those mansions in the pictures of that book. A few are gone but the video shows where the homes were located.

Little Red Truck Vintage Market At Kleffner Ranch, Helena Montana
#whyhelenamt
WELCOME
VINTAGE and ARTISAN goods are my passion.
Industrial, Farm, Western, Retro, Kitsch, Rusty, Crusty, Shabby... handcrafted, vintage inspired jewelry I love it all.
Long before I created the Little Red Truck Vintage Market... I vended at many fabulous antique and artists markets right here in the Northwest! for over 20 years! My sister and I also had an antique store for many years in Missoula where we also handpainted furniture and provided custom on-site faux painting and murals. Some wonderful memories where made
My dream was to gather the very best of the amazing vintage vendors and craftsmen I've met over the years who share this passion and bring them together with our soul sisters and brothers, those in our community who share our junk and handmade love
a match made in heaven.
Come and visit (show or shop!) .... your vintage soul will thank you!

Kleffner Ranch
Helena mining man W. C. Child initiated this ranch about 1885, as the “White Face Farm” stocked with some of the first purebred Herefords in Montana Territory. Then came the infamous “Hard Winter of 1886-87,” when deep snows and months of freezing temperatures followed drought years that had left feed sparse. Open-range cattle herds were decimated. When spring arrived, Child built the massive fieldstone barn, 55 feet tall and 100 square feet on both lower level and loft, along with other stone outbuildings. The barn held stalls for 500 cattle and could store 350 tons of hay; it is Montana’s largest barn. Shortly after its construction came that of the octagonal ranch house, which runs 20 feet on a side. With his permanent residence in Helena, Child used the structure only for meetings and parties; guests arrived via Child’s personal railroad car. The house’s entire second floor was an open ballroom. The Silver Panic of 1893 ruined Child financially, and he died that same year. As the ranch passed from owner to owner, its buildings deteriorated over the years until the Paul Kleffner family began restoration in 1943.

Helena Aviation Day, Helena Montana #whyhelenamt
Helena Aviation Day
Helena Aviation Day is taking place on September 9, 2023, offering visitors the chance to tour the Helena Boeing facility, learn about aviation careers, enjoy a food truck lunch, and an exclusive giveaway. The Montana Army National Guard will also be hosting a family day with helicopter displays, tours, and carnival games. MDT Aeronautics Division and civilian aircraft will also be on display. Aircraft owners and vendors are welcome to join and showcase their aircraft and businesses for free.
The 189th Aviation Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia, also known as a unit crest or a DUI, was originally approved on 30 December 1988 and was amended with revisions to the description and symbolism on 27 November 1989. Its ultramarine blue and golden orange tones denote the organization as part of Army Aviation, with the winged sword also suggesting the Aviation mission of the unit.
Behind the winged sword is a downward-pointing “V” shape terminating in a barbed arrowhead that points to the combat involved in the aerial assault mission. On the left side of the “V” is a skull that was adapted from the former 163rd Armored Cavalry Regiment Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, a unit in the Regiment’s past lineage. On the right is a red bitterroot, the state flower of Montana, the home state for the unit. “Sounds Of Freedom,” the unit motto, is a reference to the unmistakable sound created by whirring helicopter blades.
Comprised of the 1st Battalion, the 189th Aviation Regiment is managed by the Montana Army National Guard and has units assigned to the Army National Guard in several states in addition to Montana, including Nevada, South Dakota, and Minnesota. Headquartered in Helena, Montana, the Regiment has seen several of its component units deployed in support of the War on Terrorism, including in 2005, 2012, and most recently in October 2019 to Kuwait. The Regiment was credited with a Meritorious Unit Commendation for the extraordinary service of the 1st Battalion’s Headquarters and Headquarters Company and Companies A-D between 2 January 2005 and 15 November 2005. And in 2013, Company B, 1st Battalion was tapped for a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its support of Operation Enduring Freedom between May and December 2012.
Pioneer Helena has active job openings that offer career opportunities in challenging and fulfilling work such as Lockheed Martin’s F-35 and future military aircraft tasked with defending and securing our nation’s freedom.

B17 Bomber & Blast From The Past Drag Races 2023 Helena, Montana #whyhelenamt
Video and pictures of flying fortress in the Helena Montana area.
Take off and flight during the Blast from the past drag races at the airport.
The B-17 Flying Fortress Sentimental Journey will be in Helena, MT June 20-25, 2023. A one of a kind collection of the rarest historic military planes in the world will be near you. Come see them up close and personal, and better yet fly in one!
The Pearl Harbor attack of December 7, 1941, finally brought the United States into the war and production of the B-17 rapidly increased. By July 1942, the US began forming the Eighth Air Force in Britain, equipped with B-17Es. On August 17, 1942, eighteen United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17s carried out a bombing raid on the railway yards at Rouen in France.
Production of the B-17F was undertaken by Boeing, Vega and Douglas, the BVDs as they were called (the same abbreviation as the underwear company), but new modifications were taking their toll in airspeed. There were more than four hundred modifications on the B-17F. The only noticeable outside difference was the full blown Plexiglass nose. The B-17F, now armed with eleven 0.50-cal. guns, could only reach 299 mph (481 km/h) and the landing speed was up to 90 mph (144 km/h)! Service ceiling was 37,500 ft. (11,430 m) and range 2,880 miles (4,634 km). It took twenty-five and a half minutes to climb to 20,000 ft. (6,096 m). The BVD companies produced 3,400 B-17Fs.
The B-17F model can be distinguished from the E and G by the lack of superstructure supporting the Plexiglas nose dome.
On January 27, 1943, B-17s of the USAAF made their first attacks on Germany at the port of Wilhelmshaven. The attack was carried out by the 91st, 303rd, 305th and 306th Bomb Groups. Initially, casualties were very high because they attacked during daylight hours to achieve greater accuracy. Also proper formation flying, to enable a group of airplanes to defend each other with crossfire, (the legendary box formation) had not yet been formulated. Also the B-17F lacked adequate defense against a head-on attack.
In head-on attacks, Luftwaffe fighters would porpoise towards the B-17, beginning with a slight dive and then coming up and raking across the underbelly of the airplane and repeating this maneuver against bombers bringing up the rear. This tactic relegated the upper turret, waist and tail guns as ineffective.15
In March 1943, some relief was obtained when the P-47 Thunderbolt showed up. The P-47 could escort the bombers partially towards their targets and meet them again on the return trip. But Messerschmitt Bf 109s and Focke-Wulf Fw 190s waited for the bombers until their escorts turned back.
On October 19, 1943 during the second raid on Schweinfurt, the Luftwaffe shot down 60 and damaged 138 of the 291 B-17s dispatched, with a loss of 650 airmen. And on March 6, 1944 during a raid on Berlin, 69 B-17s were lost along with 17 fighters with a loss of 701 men. However, the Luftwaffe lost 160 aircraft. Despite such losses for the Eighth Air Force, not one mission ever turned back.16
By September 1943, the Flying Fortress showed its final shape during firepower tests on the XB-40, a modified B-17F with the advantage of a "chin" turret. The Bendix turret held two 0.50 caliber guns, which increased the armament to thirteen guns. The XB-40 didn't carry any bombs but was heavily armed and had extra armor for the crew. It was much heavier than the F Model and also slower. The idea was to escort the bombers during raids, but after the bombers released their loads, the XB-40 could not maintain formation and the bomb squads would have to slow down. The XB-40 was abandoned, but the Bendix chin turret was adapted to the B-17G.
The B-17G was produced in greater numbers than any other single model and more B-17Gs were lost than any other model. The most obvious difference was the installation of the Bendix chin turret installed under the nose. With the turret under the nose, the view through the Plexiglass nose was now unobstructed for the gunner. The chin turret also had no adverse effect on the aerodynamics of the airplane, and it finally produced the protection that was needed against head-on attacks. Another major change was the installation of the Cheyenne tail turret. The gun had a larger field of fire and the ring-and-bead site was replaced with a reflector site. On the late G models, the waist gunner windows were staggered so the gunners wouldn't get in each other's way. The radio operator's gun on the upper hatch was eliminated since it was considered of low value, because of its poor vantage point.

Gold Rush Mansions of Helena Montana, 60 Seconds #whyhelenamt
60 Seconds: Gold Rush Mansions Of Helena Montana
Helena Montana was born in the gold rush of 1864. She was named the Queen City in the late 1800s, when more millionaires lived here, per capita, than anywhere in the USA. The Montana Club here in Helena, with its exclusive brotherhood of men who were millionaires, registered 140 members.

Significance: This imposing home was presented to his daughter, Anne, as a wedding gift by former Governor S.T. Houser in 1888. It was purchased from Ann K. and Olis R. Allen by John S.M. Neill in 1903 for $10,000. John S.M. Neill was the owner and publisher of the Helena Independent, a civic leader in Helena and active in state politics as a Democrat. This house has remained in the Neill family, and is one of the best preserved of the fabulous nineteenth century mansions in Helena. Building/structure dates: 1888 Initial Construction. “ Library Of Congress”.
T.H. Kleinschmidt, 1823 Highland Ave.
B.H. Tatum, 705 Harrison
Tatum - Young House:
Samuel T. Hauser, 720 Madison Ave.
The history of this magnificent home, one of the earliest of the great mansions built on Helena’s west side, is finely interwoven with the history of Montana. Pioneer entrepreneur and financier Samuel T. Hauser built the twenty-nine-room residence in 1885, the same year President Cleveland appointed him territorial governor.
Conrad Kohrs, 804 Dearborn Ave. Kohrs Mansion
Mining investor Joseph Russell built this brick Queen Anne-style residence circa 1887. An octagonal tower adorned with applied terra-cotta flowers, spindled porches and balconies, and multiple gabled dormers with complex ornamentation distinguish it as an exemplary Victorian-era mansion. Russell speculated heavily in mining and ultimately lost the home to creditors. Deer Lodge cattle baron Conrad Kohrs first rented, then later purchased the mansion in 1900 as an anniversary gift for his wife Augusta.

Helena Aviation Day 2023 Helena, Montana #whyhelenamt
Helena Aviation Day 2023 Helena, Montana #whyhelenamt

Beautiful Drive Around Montana Capitol Building, October Helena Montana # whyhelenmt
A Beautiful Drive Around The Montana Capitol Building In October, Helena Montana #whyhelenamt
Fall drive around the Montana State Capitol Building. Beautiful sunshine with the leaves turning. Fall coming fast. The night before this drive it was 37 degree's. Just Love Fall...
A design competition for the Capitol building was conducted in 1896. The commission selected a design by George R. Mann who was the winner. In 1897, after it was found that the Commission was planning to scam money from the building project, it was disbanded and a second Capitol Commission was convened. The new Commission abandoned Mann's plan as being too costly, and had a second design competition, won by Charles Emlen Bell and John Hackett Kent, of Bell & Kent of Council Bluffs, Iowa. In order to have their design built, Bell & Kent relocated their office to Helena.
While Mann's building was never built in Montana, it was selected later as the basic design for the Arkansas State Capitol.
The winning design by Bell & Kent had been altered already during the construction phase, when in 1901 the commission asked for the structure to be made more imposing by increasing the height of the dome. Kent opposed the changes, as his original low spherical dome was meant to be "pure Greek", but Bell advocated the commission's request.
Between 1909 and 1912, the building was extended by the addition of two new wings on the eastern and western sides. This work was executed by Link & Haire, architects of Butte, with F. M. Andrews & Company of New York as consulting architects.
The Picture in the Video was of the Meagher Statue in front of the Capital of Montana.
Meagher's famous equestrian statue on the front lawn of the Montana Capitol was created by Irish-born Chicago sculptor Charles J. Mulligan. It as designed as much a tribute to the many Irish immigrants who made Montana their home as it is to Meagher himself.
Below Quote from the Montana Historical Society Website:
Thomas Francis Meagher (1823-1867) was an Irish revolutionary and Union brigadier general in the American Civil War. Known as “Meagher of the Sword,” he was exiled from Ireland to a British penal colony in Tasmania in 1848. Following his 1852 escape from Van Diemen’s Land (as Tasmania was then known), he landed in New York City, where he gained an enthusiastic following as an orator and editor of the Irish News. He arrived in Montana in 1865, having been appointed as Territorial Secretary. Over the course of the next two years he twice served as Acting Territorial Governor, drawing loyal supporters and vocal detractors in almost equal numbers. He died under mysterious circumstances in Fort Benton on July, 1, 1867. Scholars still debate whether he was murdered by political enemies or died accidentally. Irish-born Chicago sculptor Charles J. Mulligan (1866-1916) created Meagher’s equestrian statue on the front lawn of the Montana Capitol, which is as much a tribute to the many Irish immigrants who made Montana their home as it is to Meagher himself. The Meagher Memorial Association raised twenty thousand dollars by public subscription to pay for the statue, which was dedicated on July 4, 1905, before a cheering crowd of over 1,500 people.
