My bank, Barclays have threatened to close my bank account if I don’t furnish them with certain information. I’ve been with the bank for 30 years and they know exactly who I am. I’m not trying to avoid giving them the information, but I’ve been struggling to do it. I’ve been cut off, can’t get through online or on the phone…it’s been highly frustrating. I eventually called into my branch and a very good employee there helped me through it. Printed off some forms, checked them over after I’d filled them in, scanned them and sent them to the right Barclays department…however, the bank still need more information and so I’ve got to somehow go through the process again. I do have a telephone interview booked his week with Barclays so I’m hoping that will be an end to ot all. But, it got me thinking about a CASHLESS SOCIETY. Are we heading for one and is it a good idea? I personally think it’s a calamitous idea and one which will bring misery to many people down the line. If the bank can close my account today, then what happens in the future when things change for the worse, like they could…who knows what’s going to happen in the west in the coming years. What if the bank, the government, or whoever have control over your finances…what if they could switch off your finances at any moment, if you don’t quite agree with their stance on one subject or another? What a position that would be, so I think we should insist on keeping cash in our society. Pay for our coffees, lunches, fuel etc with cash. That way you at least can have some financial control. Huge Auction Result for oldest cricketer in the world! This is believed to be the oldest three-dimensional figure of a cricketer. Carved from white marble, the sculpture dates to the late 18th century and was sold recently in a California auction. The sculpture is either English or Italian (carved on the grand tour possibly?) The buyer of the sculpture was London based. Sporting memorabilia has a huge following around the world and this piece is exceptional in the fact that it’s three dimensional and being 18th century is very rare Cricket, invented in the south of England, became the country's national sport during the 18th century. It was also the perfect game to export throughout the empire and to every colony. Living abroad, often in tropical conditions, quite alien to the average Briton, the playing of tradition home grown team sports helped keep the bonds strong between the colonials. Cricket was the ideal game for this. It could be played even in intense heat and it was thought of as the most important game anyone could and should play throughout the empire... and for the good of the empire. Cricket matches allowed different sections of colonial society to come together in a bonding exercise. It kept community cohesion strong amongst the Brits abroad' and was often the social highlight of the week, where whole families could spend the day mixing and relaxing in good and alike company. This was seen as being good for mind and soul. It helped keep the British, British, no matter where in the world they found themselves. Sport unifies nations, brings people of different cultures together and unites in a way nothing else can. Cricket especially was used as a ‘getting to know you' exercise. Here’s some interesting antiques news: This chair made in around 1785 belonged to Marie Antoinette. Made by one of the finest gilt furniture makers at the time, George Jacob. Believed specifically for Queen Marie-Antoinette’s personal rooms at Versailles. I said it sold for more than the cost of a French Chateau…well, in truth you could actually buy a couple of rather good French Chateau’s for the cost of this chair.
