Beginners Guide to mixing Modern Art with Antiques
Take this group of paintings by modern living artist Mark Johnston - they’ve got a traditional feel to them in some ways, they’re not the typical abstract work you might expect when thinking about modern art…would you agree woth me that it seems Mark Johnston is inspired by the classic painters like Turner? …either way, they’re very vibrant and superbly modern …and when you look him up in gallery prices, very sought after too. The bigger paintings sell for around £9000 in a gallery
Some people struggle with the idea of putting modern art together with antiques, but let me tell you it’s easy and there’s nothing new in it…when you think for example of an upmarket classical English interior, yes you think of antiques…but the pieces you see in what might be a stately home open to the public, weren’t necessarily antiques when they were put in position!…classic interiors develop over time amd interiors are added to, so if you look carefully at these beautifully curated English interiors, you’ll see pieces from the 18th century mixed with items form the 19th century…today of course when you look at them, they’re all antiques…but it goes to show that 150 years ago designers were mixing old with new…so, doing the same today is not only normal, it can look exceptional

Restoring a 300-year-old Antique Silver Tankard Back To Life
You’re going to be one of the first humans alive today to see this antique solid silver tankard sparkle like it did when it was new, almost 300 years ago - it’s been in the same family for over 100 years amd this is the first time it’s been polished in all that time
It was of course made for drinking, but also made with a whistle to attract attention when it needed too…the whistle is located here. There’s a very good reason for the whistle and that’s coming up
Made by the silversmith Issac Cookson in Newcastle England during the george II period circa 1740. The tankard is worth a few thousands pounds and belongs to a client of mine who doesn’t want to sell it…but I offered to polish it for him…so I …we could witness it come back to life…Restoring a 300 Year Old Silver Tankard Back to Life!
It’s a grand tankard by the way. A personal one that the owner would have used at home, but also taken with him to the tavern …certainly not something that would have been tavern supplied. A tavern tankard would be cheaply made from pewter
And it’s very special indeed, not only for its quality, value and obvious beauty…I mean, come on just feast your eyes on the shape of the body…and oh that handle is truly delicious…not only a gorgeous shape, but yes, it has a built in whistle…
Designed for a specific purpose (I’ll give it a blow once I’ve finished polishing it) and that purpose was to gain the attention of the barmaid in the noisy, Smokey amd rowdy tavern. You’d Drain the tankard of its ale, put the handle up to your lips and blow like mad…the barmaid would then head in the direction of the noise and fill up your tankard from her jug of ale…that saved you from having to stand up and go to the bar yourself!

The most enthralling Antiques Auction I’ve seen in months
The last antiques auction of 2023 for Elstob Auctioneers in Ripon, North Yorkshire, England is the most interesting antiques auction I’ve seen in months. Paul Storr silver tureen at £15,000 leads the way for the traditional silver and a suite of solid cast silver candlesticks by modern artist and silversmith Patrick Mavros from Zimbabwe is the star lot in the modern silver section…original purchase cost was around £100,000 and the auction estimate is £30,000 to £40,000
Then there is the best collection of antique enamel boxes I’ve seen all year, as well as crystal pieces and a showroom full of small, interior design led pieces of antique furniture
Sit back and feast your eyes!

Antiques chat with Vanessa Garside, Deputy Mayor of Taunton in Somerset, England. She called in to see Vincent Page and Lesley White (co-owners of Antiques On High) in Taunton to see how the take over of the antiques centre was going. The centre has been in Taunton since the 1970’s, but before Vincent and Lesley took over around a year ago, things were looking bleak and the centre was on the brink of closing…now though, Antiques On High in Taunton is buzzing…packed with dealers and buyers and with a great buoyant atmosphere and the Deputy Mayor wanted to see it for herself!

Why this is the Perfect CLASSIC CAR for an Antique YouTuber?
Classic cars have a reputation for being unreliable …But after a long search I think I’ve found the perfect classic car that might work beautifully for antiques and YouTube!
It’s a 30 year old Mercedes 320CE. It was part of the Danny Lucas Mercedes Benz Museum Collection - in fact, I bought the car from Danny Lucas
It’s a perfect classic, because these Mercedes have a very good reputation for reliability - plus, look at the windows! They’re pillar-less…meaning it looks like it was designed for the antiques trade! Easy for loading and unloading antiques and paintings like this 18th / 19th Century painting of St Christopher
I’m dropping the painting into Elstob Auctioneers in Ripon (where you can buy the painting if you like!)
Let me know if you’d like updates on how the old Mercedes is going…or not!

Antique Chest or Repro? How to tell the difference? (Antiques Road Trip)
I’m David Harper (BBC Bargain Hunt / Antiques Road Trip) and I’m going to show you how to tell the difference between an antique chest of drawers and a reproduction
This is a genuine antique Chest of drawers. A small, pretty version and made around 1880. I know this, but I’m go to show you can know it too…and therefore how you can spot a real antique chest of drawers from a fake reproduction
Let’s start with Colour, condition and patination…It’s aged beautifully, there are patches of discolouration where the polish has reacted to heat or sunlight maybe.
There are small areas of damage if you look closely , missing sections of veneer…and fascinatingly you can see the colour of the wood underneath the veneer. The wood underneath when new would have been very white and crisp, but over the years the white colour has mellowed down…in some areas it’s been touched in …this is a good sign and to be expected. Antique pieces of furniture need to show wear, it’s a good thing…some things , like some people…just get better with age!!
Theres a little splitting in the veneer in places…little cracks here and there. Here’s a good example on this drawer.
Not that noticeable, but a good sign…possibly even caused from over eager closing and locking of the panel.
And Talking about the panel, EXAMINE ITS COLOUR facing you… it’s a nice patination , matches everything else in view…but open the panel and what do you notice on the back…the colour is very different…very different
And This, is very good news. what you’re looking at now was pretty much the chests original colour 14o years ago…but over the last century and a half, the colour on the front has changed with use, polish…light…a good bit of grime, grease from fingers and dust …all rubbed in and all over, has , over time altered the original colour…it’s just what you want to see. Whereas the area prettier Ted from the world has kept its original colour… isn’t that marvellous!
Now what about the drawers,,,the drawers will every time reveal secrets, I promise you
Always take a drawer completely out and look at its construction …ooh, the giveaway dovetail joints. Here you’ll see evidence of hand cutting. See this line here. It’s a scribe mark drawn by the cabinet maker as a measure. He’d cut the dovetail to the line. The tails are also very fine and not perfectly matched…well, they wouldn’t be, they’re hand cut! A sign of an antique
A sign of a reproduction would be chunky dovetails, all the same size, crude amd with no measuring line here…because of course it wouldn’t be needed….it would be mass machine made
Now take a look at the bottom of the drawer. The base. See how all the way around the edge, the wood is shaved off…chamfered.
This is done so the panel fits snuggly into the drawer…and it’s done beautifully…and by hand…you can tell this because of this uneven wavy line, indicating the hand of a craftsman
Before we put the drawer back in, Take a look at the back of the handles…are they original? You can tell straight away. Look for evidence of old handles being in place. Obvious Holes, stains, imprints of other shaped handle backs…This of course tells you whether the handles have been replaced, but also shows that the piece is likely antique…as it was quite normal to periodically replace handles after damaged coursed by use, or to update the piece as fashions changed.
In this case, theres no evidence of a handle change, which is really rather good, the handles are original
Sticking with the handles for a moment…you’ll also notice if you study the shape and form of them, that the turning is very slightly different. The handles are not perfectly matched when scrutinised…again, a lovely sign of hand workmanship, which you dont find on mass made reproductions…
Finally the bottom…you know that the bottom of any antique can tell you so much…and this is no exception
First notice the dark colour of the base board. Very good, that’s nicely aged…but look around the skirt - this is the area that sits on a surface…in this case, a table or a desk. You can see the wear here made over years as the chest is shimmied around
Thanks for watching. Do let me know if this was useful

Why is this 19th Century Cannon called a ‘Grasshopper Gun’ You can buy it for £?????
An example of the unusual objects yiu can find at Newark antiques fair…well, it is the biggest antiques fair in Europe, so I shouldn’t be surprised to find this fascinating item - a military Cannon and refered to as a galloper gun, or a grasshopper Cannon …great names and there’s a good reason for them too, which I’ll tell you in a moment
Now, look at the size. It’s tiny, it fires a three pound shot and was designed to be effective against infantry…and you know as small as this thing is, it would be pretty devastating if you were on the receiving end of it
So, 19th century I’d say, it’s for sale with a dealer at Newark. I’ll put his name and number in the video description if you’re interested. I’ll give you the price at the end of the video
So, why is it called first of all a galloper gun…well, being so small and light, it could easily be towed by a single horse…and very quickly too…so, off it would go at a gallop dragged behind a horse to the front line.
Once at the frontline and in action, every time it was fired in anger, this small Cannon would leap in the air like a grasshopper!… so it also gained the nickname a grasshopper gun
Right, price…ticket price is £1800 but with some polite negotiating, you might that down a bit…let me know if you buy it!

100 Year Old Motor Boat TAKES HER FINAL JOURNEY
You could have bought this 100 Year Old Motor Boat for £1 !!
The condition of the sale was, you need to take her away (See my early video) Well, something is happening and the old boat is being towed out of her berth. She hasn’t moved for decades and in doing so, she might sink. If she doesn’t sink, then she’ll be lifted out of the water by a crane…where she might break up.
I caught it all on video…see what happens!

Why this AWOL Black American Sailor was Sculptured by Fredda Brilliant (1903 - 1999)
This is Wade King, a black American Navy sailor who went AWOL during the Second World War in London. He was spotted by the Polish born artist Fredda Brilliant who thought he was beautiful and so asked if she could sculpt him - Ward agreed and turned up to Freda’s studio regularly to sit for the sculpture. Fredda Brilliant only discovered later that Ward was on the run from the US Navy. For the full story and more information, get in touch with Charlie Wallrock from Wick Antiques

Why BANKSY loves this antique Bronze?
This is a miniature bronze model of the famous huge original you can see in Glasgow city centre
Information below from Wick Antiques website
An equestrian bronze of the Duke of Wellington by Edward Baily, 1844
Description
This bronze statuette shows Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington riding his warhorse Copenhagen. He is dressed in civilian clothes with the reins in one hand and his top hat in the other. The engraving on the bottom of the horse’s underbelly reads: ‘Published as the act directs by Hunt & Roskell, late Storr Mortimer & Hunt 156 New Bond Street, Nr 1951 June 1844’.
Edward Hodges Baily (1788- 1867) was born in Bristol to a family of ships’ figurehead carvers. At 16 he moved to the studio of John Flaxman in London and also enrolled into the Royal Academy. Baily went on to become one of the most celebrated Neoclassical sculptors of 19th century Britain, winning a gold medal at the Royal Academy and multiple commissions for public monuments. These included the bas-reliefs on the south side of Marble Arch in Hyde Park and the statue of Nelson on Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square. He worked for Hunt & Roskell as one of their chief designers, having previously worked for the goldsmiths at Rundell & Bridge. His work was so admired by Paul Storr, that he asked him to join his new venture in 1819.
In the 1851 Great Exhibition, the stand of Hunt & Roskell was one of the main attractions of the entire event and according to the official exhibition catalogue, it presented ‘an equestrian statuette of the Duke of Wellington, in bronze. Modelled by E.H. Bailey, Esq., R.A’ (Royal Commission, 1851, p.687). In the 1862 Exhibition, Hunt & Roskell seem to have shown the piece again with the British antiquary John Timbs noting: ‘[…] but not only have the models been carefully executed by the artists themselves, but they have been thoroughly well finished and chased afterwards […] An equestrian statuette in bronze of the Duke of Wellington is a good and graceful work, very much better than half of our public statues.’ (Timbs, 1863, p. 229).
Other works of Edward Hodges Baily are currently exhibited in the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Bristol Museum & Art Gallery and the TATE Britain. Literature: John Timbs, The Industry, Science, & Art of the Age: or The International Exhibition of 1862, (London: 1863), p. 229. Michael Forrest, Art Bronzes (Pittsburgh: 1988), illus. p. 366. Philippa Glanville, Silver in England (London: 1987), p. 255. The Royal Commission, Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations 1851 – Official Descriptive and Illustrated Catalogue, Vol. II (London: 1851), p. 687.
