Kenyan President William Ruto backed down from his controversial $2.7 billion tax hike plan on Wednesday, saying he would withdraw the finance bill that sparked days of violent nationwide protests in which at least 22 people were killed, and many more were injured, according to medical services. In a televised address, Ruto said he would not sign the 2024 Finance Bill into law after reflecting on the public outcry against it, a striking reversal after he had condemned Tuesday's unrest as an "unprecedented attack" on democracy. Plus, the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) condemned the Kenyan government's decision to crack down on the anti-tax bill protests, on Wednesday in Nairobi. A house, occupied by a local family for more than 50 years, collapsed into the Blue Earth River near a flooded dam in Minnesota on Tuesday. Concerns have risen over the condition of the 114-year-old Rapidan Dam as heavy rain, erosion, and severe flooding continue to affect southern Minnesota. Captain Paul Barta of the Blue Earth County Sheriff's Office explained that debris lodged in the dam led to water flow restrictions. "Dam has been on free flow for the last few years. With that obstruction, the water needed to find somewhere to go and ultimately created a new path on the west side of the dam and kind of undermined that side of the structure," he said. Community members gathered along the river bank to view the scene of the house toppling into the river. In an agreed-upon deal both Russia and Ukraine sent home 90 prisoners of war (POWs) each between Tuesday and Wednesday. This comes as the latest of multiple sporadic exchanges in the countries’ ongoing war, which began 28 months ago. In a statement given from Kyiv on Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy alluded to more exchanges in the future. “We are working to return all our people from Russian captivity home, to Ukraine. Every single one. We're not forgetting anyone,” he said. “It was unexpected,” an ex-POW from Russia told a reporter on Wednesday, after making his way back to Moscow. “Everybody was smiling, everybody was happy,” he said of his return. The prisoner swap was the first since May 31 and overseen by the United Arab Emirates, who acted as an intermediary. On this very windy day I stopped trailside to have a quick lunch of pancake bacon dippers. Due to the wind I opted to use a split log stove instead of having a fire on the ground. The area I was in had a lot of debris and duff on the forest floor and with the strong winds I didn't want to risk starting a forest fire. The split log stove worked great in these conditions and left zero footprint where it burned. The stove was made from a less than ideal piece of spruce wood. The log was slightly damp and some of it was beginning to rot. Despite the low quality wood the stove still performed great. I was able to fry up my bacon then cook the pancakes without trouble. Due to the moisture in the log, one half of the stove burned much more efficiently than the other half (as you can see at the end of the video). I believe the half that didn't burn so well had more moisture and was likely on the underside of the leaning tree the log was cut from. A good dry piece of wood is much more ideal for a split log stove but this was a good demonstration that the concept works even if the log isn't perfect. The pancake bacon dippers were a delicious lunch. I like this meal because it is easy to pack and simple to cook. Bacon, just add water pancake mix, and some maple syrup is all that's needed for this meal. Thank you to everyone who watches! God bless and happy trails.

Kenyan police fired on demonstrators trying to storm Nairobi’s legislature on Tuesday, killing at least five protesters. Sections of the parliament building were set ablaze as lawmakers inside passed a bill to raise taxes. In chaotic scenes, protesters overwhelmed police and chased them away in an attempt to storm the parliament compound, with protesters reportedly managing to enter the Senate chamber.
