Calgary nears final stages of restoring full water use after main break
Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek announced on Saturday that emergency crews are close to fully restoring water use after a major feeder main break that has affected the city’s waterlines for nearly a month.
Gondek mentioned that many people, including Premier Danielle Smith, are seeking answers regarding the cause of the initial break and how to enhance the city’s water system for the future.
On her province-wide radio show "Your Province. Your Premier," Smith said that developers informed her about Calgary’s high water leakage, referencing a report from the spring. "We need to investigate why Calgary’s water leakage rates in their pipe system are high and address this issue," she stated. Smith also expressed concerns about whether Calgary’s water infrastructure can handle the additional stress from planned blanket rezoning to include more apartment complexes.
Gondek responded that the report mentioned by Smith has been thoroughly discussed and presented to city council.
Additionally, the general manager of Calgary Infrastructure Services, Michael Thompson, added that the city is actively collaborating with industry to reduce water leakage across the system.

Canadian mortgage renewals will weigh on economic growth: Deloitte
Deloitte Canada's latest economic outlook suggests that the pace of interest rate cuts is expected to increase in 2025, but this may not be sufficient to shield many Canadian homeowners from the impact of impending mortgage renewals.
The forecast, released on Wednesday, predicts a 1.2 per cent growth in the overall real gross domestic product for 2024, slightly higher than the previous estimate of 1.0 per cent. However, Deloitte Canada has revised its expectations for 2025, now projecting a growth of 2.6 per cent as opposed to the previously anticipated 2.9 per cent.
Global's Anne Gaviola has more on what the world’s largest financial services firm sees on the horizon for the Canadian economy and household budgets.

Backcountry Bedroll Camping & Campfire Cooking
While I do wish that there was more snow and colder temperatures, I certainly can't complain about the weather during this trip. Some very mild winter conditions allowed me to be extremely comfortable on an overnight campout with a minimal bedroll kit. I'm beginning to explore areas for a future project I hope to begin this summer. The resources in this area looked quite promising for my needs.
Let me know if you have any questions! Thank you to everyone who watches. All glory to God!

Global National: June 26, 2024 | Newfoundland and Labrador cod moratorium ends after 32 years

"Catastrophic" house explosion rattles Winnipeg residents
Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to a house explosion on Camrose Bay on Wednesday morning. Firefighters say when they arrived at the scene just before 11:20 a.m., they found the house completely destroyed — with just the foundation remaining — and debris was scattered around.
“It’s basically down to the foundations — it was a catastrophic explosion,” WFPS deputy chief Scott Wilkinson said. “The house itself is completely levelled.” There’s no information yet about what happened or whether anyone was hurt. “At this time, we’ve been able to confirm vacancy and/or searched and found no victims in the adjoining houses… but of course it’s too early to tell. We’re still investigating whether anybody was home at the time of the explosion in the house that was initially damaged," he added.
Karl Lent, who lives next to the Transcona-area house that exploded, said he was blown back by two explosions, and he's still shaking from the "boom."
Lent said the exterior of his home suffered major damage when his deck caught fire. "I heard two explosions," he said. "The first one was the big one, which blew me over and swung open my garage door," Lent added.
Wilkinson said firefighters are keeping an eye on some of the nearby homes that were affected by the incident.
