Rewards are just control in a nicer package. And it's been proven over and over that when you reward someone for doing something they enjoy, they are no longer able to enjoy the activity as much. It's also been shown that people do a worse job when they expect a reward for the task. Kidding but not. It's probably the hardest thing for me about homeschooling. Taking my kids to homeschool classes and play groups because I want THEM to get to make friends and socialize even though I have NO IDEA how to talk to the other parents and feeling like a complete social outcast! I literally sat at a picnic table all by myself the other day because all the other homeschool parents were sitting together, and it was just so awkward. Whether we intend to or not, by not sending our kids to school, that's the message that a lot of public school families receive. I mean, if school is good enough for their kids, why isn't it good enough for ours? Similar to parents who choose to send their kids to private school. I think maybe this is why there's so much criticism about homeschooling from public school families. Not because there's really anything wrong with homeschooling (and not because they really care what we do with our kids even if homeschooling WAS that bad). But because of how our decision to homeschool indirectly makes it seem like we think public school is a poor choice. And maybe we do think that, at least for our own kids. That's why we homeschool. But it doesn't mean we're looking down on parents who make different choices.
