Harry Potter Movies Being Rebooted?
https://www.giantfreakinrobot.com/ent/harry-potter-being-rebooted.html
Harry Potter has been a long and storied franchise that sits behind a magnanimous amount of fans. Though the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them movie series helped to broaden the Wizarding World a bit more, it failed to live up to the expectations of the original franchise. Well, a new rumor has stated that the franchise is now going to be rebooted, which includes recasting of all kinds.
Granted, Harry Potter fans have been begging for the mainline series to keep going, and many have pointed to continuing on with The Cursed Child. However, Daniel Radcliffe showed no interest in carrying on as The Boy Who Lived, and rightfully so. Radcliffe’s career has not been defined by his record-setting franchise, and he has gone on to be in tons of great movies since then.
Harry Potter is full of plenty of lore that could be explored in different ways. Take Hogwarts Legacy, for instance, the new video game is going to be exploring an older age of the Harry Potter franchise. The game will cover the Victorian era and take place hundreds of years before the events of Harry Potter take place.
The rebooted Harry Potter movies could do that, or simply tell the original story in a much different way with a much different cast. The above rumor seems to indicate that the latter is going to happen, much to the dismay of many adoring fans of Radcliffe and the other spectacular actors that have come and gone from the franchise. We are not sure how this newly rebooted franchise might look but going with a recast could spell through for this glorious series.
harry potter
To be fair, despite the Harry Potter movies being as good as they are, there are always those that say the books were far better. This newly rebooted plan could involve telling a more factual story by staying as close to the source material as possible. Again, we know that the movies are heralded as untouchable, so we would imagine people are going to be plenty upset about a full reboot.
Harry Potter is a phenomenon though, so it should stand to reason that anybody could take on the titular role. It would be interesting if this new reboot would go in a much darker way, making the deaths of Harry’s parents turn him more into an ambitious wizard who wants nothing more than to kill Voldemort. Granted, no one knew that Voldemort was alive then, but you get our point.
Hollywood is full of remakes and reboots, and it’s honestly been long enough that a Harry Potter reboot doesn’t sound as crazy as it should be. Warner Bros. knows what it is doing when it comes to pumping out a franchise for money, and people would likely still flock to the theaters to see this new rendition of the franchise. We will be far more interested once the casting announcements start to come out and see who is going to take on the lead role from Daniel Radcliffe.

Charlie Cox Confirms ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Will Attempt To “Appeal To A Slightly Younger Audience”
https://boundingintocomics.com/2022/12/22/charlie-cox-confirms-daredevil-born-again-will-attempt-to-appeal-to-a-slightly-younger-audience/
Much to the dismay of the very few fans who were still holding out hope that The Man Without Fear would survive his jump to the Marvel Cinematic Universe without being ‘Disney-ified’, Matt Murdock actor Charlie Cox has confirmed that rather than continue in spirit from his original Netflix series, Disney Plus’ upcoming Daredevil: Born Again will attempt to “appeal to a slightly younger audience without losing what we’ve learned about what works.”

Sharing his excitement in returning to the role of Daredevil for Disney Plus, Cox explained to NME’s Olly Richards that though Born Again may share some actors with Netflix’s Daredevil, it would present a take on the character different from the one that fans have come to know and love.
“This has to be a reincarnation, it has to be different, otherwise why are we doing it?” said Cox.

Noting that the widely-panned version of Daredevil seen in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law was more “quick-witted and funny and charismatic and carefree at times”, Cox then admitted, “My opinion is this character works best when he’s geared towards a slightly more mature audience. My instinct is that on Disney+ it will be dark but it probably won’t be as gory.”

In light of this prediction, Olly asked Cox if he had any words for the many fans who found themselves disappointed by the lighter tone Born Again is reportedly taking.
“I would say to those people, we’ve done that,” replied the actor. “Let’s take the things that really worked, but can we broaden? Can we appeal to a slightly younger audience without losing what we’ve learned about what works?”

DC STUDIOS BRAND BECOMING TOXIC? Fires Henry Cavill, Supports Amber Heard, Cancels Snyderverse!?!?!
There are already some worrying signs ahead for fan interest in DC Studios as James Gunn appears poised to reset large swaths of the DC universe.

Is the DC Brand Becoming Toxic?
https://www.denofgeek.com/movies/is-the-dc-brand-becoming-toxic/
We wouldn’t blame him if James Gunn is wondering right about now if there’s an idea for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4″ based on how his first two months as co-CEO of DC Studios has gone. Gunn and partner Peter Safran officially started in their jobs on Nov. 1, tasked by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav with revamping and rebooting the company’s occasionally lucrative DC Comics cinematic universe after a troubled near-decade at the multiplex has led to some triumphs, a whole lot of failures, a fractured and incoherent slate of films, and a bitterly divided fan base. And at least the initial response in the press to their hiring was overwhelmingly positive.
Based on recent events, however, the pair have their work cut out for them. Before they can even start to produce and release the films and TV shows that they are developing, there are still four more DC movies on the schedule for 2023. And that’s where the trouble seems afoot. Online movie ticket seller Fandango released a survey conducted among users of the top 10 most anticipated blockbusters (of course, that’s assuming they make “blockbuster” money) of next year. Of the 10, only one was a DC film: Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which came in at number six.
The top three films on the list were (in order) Gunn’s own Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania—two MCU films and one Marvel-adjacent movie.
On a smaller list of the top five most anticipated superhero films, the top four were all Marvel, with The Marvels landing at #4 behind the three already mentioned above, and Aquaman 2 coming in at #5. Nowhere to be found on either list: DC efforts Shazam: Fury of the Gods, Blue Beetle, and the problem-plagued, $200 million-costing The Flash.
The question thus becomes: Has the arguably lousy quality of several recent DCEU releases—Wonder Woman 1984, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and Black Adam—turned audiences off this particular film universe? Also while the general public may not be as aware of the intricate details, has the recent drama involving Gunn and Safran’s alleged scrapping of most of the remaining elements (and cast members) from the Snyderverse iteration of DC, the continued toxic behavior of bereaved DC fans on social media, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s very visible attempt to commandeer the DC canon just made even casual fans throw up their hands and give up?
All of this came to a head in the embarrassing spectacle surrounding Henry Cavill’s brief return as Superman in the mid-credits scene of Black Adam. The whole thing was apparently willed into existence by Johnson, who was intent on setting up at the very least his own corner of the DC universe in which his Black Adam and Cavill’s Kal-El could go mano a mano.
But Gunn and Safran had other plans, telling Cavill just two months later that his services were no longer required, and telling Johnson a short time later that his wouldn’t be either. With some reports suggesting Black Adam stands to lose as much as $150 million for Warner Bros. (Johnson has disputed these claims on social media), we don’t see a future in which that character fights the IRS, let alone the last son of Krypton.
With Cavill and Johnson out, Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 3 canceled, and the fate of Snyderverse charter members Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Jason Momoa (Aquaman), and Ezra Miller (the Flash) uncertain—although Gunn has denied rumors that all of the old guard will be recast—a number of fans online, many of them still clinging to the hopeless “restore the SnyderVerse” quest, have already begun calling for Gunn’s head (often in typically classless terms).
Gunn himself addressed the issue in a Twitter thread earlier this week, saying that he and Safran “were aware” that certain fans could be “uproarious and unkind, to say the least,” while adding, “Disrespectful outcry will never, ever affect our actions.”

Go woke, go broke! Disney stock on its way to worst year since 1974 after ‘Avatar’ sequel fails to make up for string of flops
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11567283/Disney-stock-way-worst-year-1974-Avatar-sequel-disappoints.html
Disney's stock price is down 45 percent and on track for the company's worst annual stock performance in nearly 50 years after a somewhat tepid opening for the sequel Avatar: The Way of Water.
The House of Mouse - which is already planning to freeze hiring and cut some jobs - has seen disappointing results beyond the James Cameron film - in streaming services Disney+ and other 'woke' flop films like Strange World and Lightyear.
Avatar: The Way Of Water made $434.5million at the box office during its global debut, according to studio estimates Sunday, after director James Cameron said it needs to earn $2billion to break even.
While the numbers aren't a flop, they're still behind the company's stock price dropping nearly eight percent and putting it on course for its worst finish since 1974.

The franchise - which has at least one further film in the can and potentially more - made $134million from North American theaters and another $300.5 million internationally for a $434.5million global opening.
'The Way of Water' tied with 'The Batman' as the fourth highest domestic debut of the year, finishing behind several Marvel blockbusters like 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' ($187.4million May), 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,' ($181million in November) and 'Thor: Love and Thunder' ($144.2million in July).

Disney was shooting for $500million worldwide, according to Forbes, which has caused a down reaction to the box office results.
It has been a troubling year for Disney, with Disney+ losing money despite increasing subscribers. The streamer lost $1.5billion in 2022, up from $630million in 2021.
Perhaps the biggest hit the company has taken was over outgoing CEO Bob Chapek's handling of Florida's supposed 'Don't Say Gay' bill. It was reported that Chapek was fired after receiving several internal complaints from senior staffers that the exec was running the company into the ground.
The former CEO Bob Iger - who made a shock return to the top job last month - publicly and privately stated he disliked how Chapek handled everything, from the battle with Ron DeSantis, which led to the company losing major tax breaks, to self-governance, to Scarlett Johansson's contract dispute over Black Widow.

Total PANIC IN HOLLYWOOD! WILL NEVER Be The SAME! WARNER BROS CFO Named "Villain Of The Year"!
The Hollywood creative community will never be the same after the strict discipline of the new WARNER BROS management. Gunnar Wiedenfels, Zaz’s hatchet man, became the avatar of Hollywood’s perilousness in 2022 and managed to turn Warner Bros. and HBO, two of the industry’s premier brands, into objects of scorn and suspicion in the creative community.

Let’s call 2022 the year of the write-off. Or maybe the year that most entertainment people would like to write off. Or, if we’re really being honest, it was the year that Hollywood itself was written-off—and not like when a TV star bails on a hit because he thinks he’s a movie star.
We don’t need to rehash the awfulness of 2022 in this space. Suffice to say the Roaring 2010s finally ended, media companies lost a combined $500 billion in value, per the Financial Times, layoffs and cutbacks ensued, everyone freaked out, and a pall of anxiety and confusion took hold. “A perfect storm of bad news,” the analyst Michael Nathanson said. “I’ve been covering this sector a long time and I’ve never seen such a bad collection of data points before.” Happy holidays.
Against that backdrop, Netflix all-of-a-sudden discovered that advertising was cool and fun, and Disney panic-swapped its Bobs. But I think we can all agree that no company represented the industry’s perilous state more than Warner Bros. Discovery,—a mashed-together content Frankenstein born of AT&T desperation and investor John Malone’s fear that Discovery wasn’t big enough to transition from cable to streaming. Launched in April (yes, it’s only been eight months) and saddled with more than $50 billion in debt, its C.E.O. David Zaslav may have moved into Robert Evans’ house and sat behind Jack Warner’s desk, but he arrived in Burbank with a mandate to cut $3 billion and cut fast. To Zaz’s credit, he was never coy about that.
Layoffs, yes; thousands of them in a slow-moving mass execution. Synergies and redundancies everywhere. Reduced content spends, almost certainly. That was all expected, but there was an added element of indignity that few in Hollywood saw coming: the abrupt scrapping of films and shows that had already been greenlit. Some of them after they were finished. And nobody at WBD better personified that controversial strategy than Gunnar Wiedenfels, the company’s genial chief financial officer, whose moves managed to turn Warner Bros. and HBO, two of the industry’s premier brands, into objects of scorn and suspicion in the creative community.
This isn’t necessarily a knock on Wiedenfels; calling the machete-wielding C.F.O. of an over-levered company a “villain” for Hollywood people is somewhat akin to saying he’s doing his job. Arguably, Zaslav is more villainous here, given he’s Gunnar’s boss. Or John Stankey and Jason Kilar, the AT&T braintrust whose decisions created many of the problems that are necessitating all these cuts. Or Malone, whose willingness to give up his controlling shares in Discovery enabled the WBD transaction in the first place. Or maybe this is all, just as Zaz has said, the tough love that the company needs for long-term health. We’ll see.
But like it or not (I think he likes it), Gunnar has become the face of the cuts and content shrinkage both at his company and even industrywide, thanks to his public role defending the Warner Discovery strategy at investor events, including at the Citi conference on Jan. 5. He’s Public Enemy No. 1 to creative people, and a potential hero to those watching the increasingly troubled bottom line. “Gunnar is probably one of the best C.F.O.s that I’ve seen in my career,” the analyst Jessica Reif Ehrlich said in September. “He’s very detail oriented, he does the work, takes the time and goes over all the details.”
OK… but his more aggressive moves have created reputational consequences for the company and its brands that may linger beyond the annual spreadsheets. They also just feel shitty, in an industry where the perception of shittiness can be the difference between landing the next big hit or seeing it go to a rival. The headlines fly every couple days, so we’ve kinda become numb to it all. But Wiedenfels executed an $825 million write-down in content during his first quarter in the gig, including a $496 million “impairment” on content. That meant stuff that was already made or in production, like those shows at the Turner networks that were shooting one day and then not shooting the next. Hell, even the SAG Awards got kicked to the curb. The SAG Awards!

Scarlett Johansson Says She Was 'Kind of Groomed' Into Being a 'Bombshell-Type Actor'
https://www.cbr.com/scarlett-johansson-discusses-groomed-bombshell-actor/
Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson has opened up about how she was "kind of groomed" into being a "bombshell-type actor" in the early stages of her career.
During a recent appearance on the Table for Two with Bruce Bozzi podcast, Johansson discussed that she found herself repeatedly playing overly sexualized roles when she was starting off her career. "I did Lost in Translation and Girl With the Pearl Earring, and by that point, I was 18, 19 and I was coming into my own womanhood and learning my own desirability and sexuality," Johansson explained. "I was kind of being groomed, in a way, to be this what you call a bombshell-type actor. I was playing the other woman and the object of desire and I suddenly found myself cornered in this place. I couldn't get out of it."

The Oscar nominee shared that she was concerned about the limited opportunities as an actor after being typecast. "But for that kind of bombshell, you know, that burns bright and quick and then it's done and you don't have opportunity beyond that," she said. In fact, the actor highlighted how her character of Black Widow in Iron Man 2 was initially "underdeveloped and over-sexualized". She overcame this by working closely with director Jon Favreau and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige to make the character more progressive.
Scarlett Johansson Has Made Quite the Name for Herself
Despite the entire situation being a "weird conundrum to be in" Johansson continued to work hard to carve a place for herself in the industry and work in a variety of projects in an attempt to move away from her "bombshell" roles.

Earlier this year, Johansson shed light on how being hypersexualized affected her career in Hollywood. On an episode of Dax Shepard's podcast, Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, the actor discussed her early days in the industry. "I kind of became objectified and pigeonholed in this way where I felt like I wasn't getting offers for work for things that I wanted to do," she said. However, she does think that things have changed over the years and that Hollywood has begun to take women more seriously. "Now, I see younger actors that are in their 20s. It feels like they're allowed to be all these different things," she explained.
After starring in several prominent films in the past decade, Johansson has become one of the most popular actors in the industry. In 2019, she earned the title of the highest-paid actress in Hollywood for the second year in a row, earning $56 million for her roles in Black Widow and Avengers: Endgame. The actor is soon set to star in the Apple TV+ movie Project Artemis, opposite Chris Evans.

Three Marvel sequels are the most anticipated movies of 2023, according to Fandango
https://www.cnbc.com/2022/12/20/marvel-sequels-are-most-anticipated-movies-of-2023-fandango-survey.html
New installments in the Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Verse and Ant-Man series are the most anticipated movies of 2023, according to a Fandango survey.
Moviegoers also say they will be going to the theater more in 2023 than they did this year.
Next year will bring the most blockbuster releases since 2019, which is good news for theaters that have been hurting for content.
Movie fans apparently can’t get enough of superheroes.
A trio of upcoming Marvel movies − the newest installments of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Man and Ant-Man franchises − are the top three most anticipated films for 2023, according to a new survey by Fandango.
Moviegoers also said they plan to head to theaters more often than they did this year, according to the survey, which was conducted in early December and is based on responses from more than 5,000 movie fans who bought at least one ticket in 2022.
“Anybody that is at this point saying that there is Marvel fatigue or superhero fatigue is clearly not the ones going to the movies,” said Erik Davis, managing director of Fandango, the movie and TV information and ticketing site.
Read more: What’s next for Netflix, Disney, Warner Bros. and Paramount?
The survey indicates a big appetite for familiar characters and universes. Many of the most-anticipated films are prequels, sequels or films otherwise connected to a well-known franchise. It marks the second consecutive year that franchises dominated Fandango’s most-anticipated list.
2023′s Top 10 Most-Anticipated Movies Across Categories
1. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” (Disney
)
2. “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” (Sony)
3. “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” (Disney)
4. “John Wick: Chapter 4” (Lionsgate
)
5. “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (Disney)
6. “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” (Warner Bros.)
7. “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” (Paramount
)
8. “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of the Songbirds and Snakes” (Lionsgate)
9. “Creed III” (MGM)
10. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (Universal
)
Among the top 10 overall most anticipated films, only “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” isn’t part of an established movie series. But even that film comes with the name recognition of the popular video game franchise and coincides with the opening of Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios in California.
Some nonfranchise films with more mid-tier budgets, such as “Cocaine Bear” and “M3gan,” still made some of the separate, category-specific lists. “Cocaine Bear,” a dark comedy about a bear that consumes cocaine and goes on a murderous rampage, is the third most-anticipated live-action comedy. “M3gan,” which is about a lifesize AI doll that turns evil, is the fifth most-anticipated horror movie.
“I definitely think that there’s room for smaller films to make a lot of noise,” said Davis. “But I think coming into a brand-new year – and this is not a new thing – it’s these larger films, these big sequels, these big anticipated franchises that people are really looking forward to most.”
For Hollywood, the wave of big franchise releases in 2023 could signal the desire for stability after the industry was rattled by Covid pandemic disruptions.
Franchises and legacy films are “a box-office insurance policy,” said Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at Comscore. “I think studios are always risk-averse and the greatest insurance is that at least people will know what the movie is about.”
Most movie watchers also said they plan to be in theaters more often in 2023 than they were this year, with 84% saying they intend to see at least six films in a movie theater. Last year, 80% said they wanted to see a minimum of five movies in theaters.

Total PANIC Over WARNER BROS & DC STUDIOS! Cancellations And Firings And Zero Information For Fans!
Warner Bros CEO David Zaslav and James Gunn have no PR/communications for the fans. Zaslav is great with the business press, but he doesn't communicate with fans of his content, like Westworld. Communication is key, especially when changes and cancellations are made. James Gunn is worse because his offhand tweets, while they make him seem accessible and can be informative, make it seem like important decisions, such as firing Henry Cavill, are being made carelessly.

On one level, Monday was a great day for HBO and HBO Max. Ratings data showed The White Lotus ended its second season with record-high ratings, and the platform basked in the glow of 14 Golden Globe nominations. Yet as it has several times this year, the ruthless cost cutting of parent company Warner Bros. Discovery stole some of that spotlight. Word leaked that several more HBO and HBO Max series were about to disappear from Max, including the very successful Westworld. The timing obviously wasn’t intentional, but folks in Hollywood again wondered: What the hell is going on?
The short answer, based on conversations with sources familiar with the situation, is this is a sequel to the story we saw play out earlier this year. Programs such as Minx and Westworld are being shelved because WBD is taking advantage — one last time — of special circumstances related to the merger of the former WarnerMedia and Discovery Networks. Long story short, there are legal rules and regulations allowing a company like WBD to write down costs incurred as part of a post-merger restructuring — but only for a short amount of time. Taking shows such as Minx or Westworld out of the HBO Max — and, more importantly, the WBD — library will apparently help the megacorporation make its future balance sheets look a lot better. This isn’t just about saving a few thousand dollars on residual checks or licensing costs; it’s about writing down millions in amortization costs these titles would have incurred in coming years. A vanished show here, a vanished show there, and pretty soon you’re talking about a meaningful impact on WBD’s overall earnings report — or so the company hopes.
What’s weird about this week is that a few months ago, it was assumed WBD had gone through its books and found all possible cost savings related to the merger. Since Westworld and Minx haven’t aired new episodes since the first round of slashing went down, why not simply delete them from the HBO Max vault over the summer? Nobody is talking, but it’s hard not to conclude that WBD CEO David Zaslav opted to pull out his cost-cutting axe one more time because his company’s financial situation has grown direr in the last few months.
Indeed, the refrain from multiple media CEOs in recent weeks indicates the advertising market has grown far chillier with no signs of improvement. In fact, just last month, Zaslav told an investors conference that “it’s going to be hard” to meet revenue forecasts unless things improve on the ad front. And referring to the overall state of WBD, Zaslav made Debbie Downer sound like an optimist: “It’s messier than we thought, it’s much worse than we thought.” So basically, in addition to a debt problem and Wall Street’s generally meh attitude toward streaming, WBD found itself dealing with broader economic headwinds this fall. The result? One more round of disowning WBD content.
If there’s any good news, it’s that several titles may well resurface elsewhere next year. HBO Max has given full rights to Minx back to producing studio Lionsgate, and the indie studio has said it plans to find a new home for both the first season of the show and the as-yet unaired second season. (If need be, Lionsgate could even decide to put the series on its own platform, Starz.) Titles produced in-house by WBD studios, meanwhile, may end up on free-ad supported (FAST) streamers such as Roku Channel or Amazon’s Freevee, sources say. While there have been reports that these shows would end up on a planned WBD-owned ad-supported streamer, sources tell me that’s unlikely. Because they are being shelved as part of the “restructuring” savings, those shows can’t make significant money for the company any more. Any revenue gleaned by selling to an outside FAST platform, however, would be so small relatively small that apparently it’s OK.

‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ Box Office: Jury Is Out on Whether Sequel Will Ride the Waves or Drift
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/avatar-the-way-of-water-box-office-jurys-out-1235284425
James Cameron is known for defying the odds. Over the past 25 years, he has proven his naysayers wrong twice when Avatar, and a decade earlier, Titanic, became the top-grossing films of all time at the worldwide box office.
Now comes along the long-awaited sequel Avatar: The of Water, which opened notably behind tracking projections over the Dec. 16-18 frame when collecting an estimated $134 million in domestic ticket sales. Heading into the weekend, various services and major exhibitors predicted the big-budget sequel would open in the $150 million-$175 million range domestically and serve as a rescue operation after a brutal fall for moviegoing.

Box Office: 'Avatar 2' Opens to $134M, Behind Expectations But Still Sizable
Overseas, the movie debuted to $307.6 million for a global start of $435 million, one of the best showings of the pandemic era. One downer: the movie opened to a muted $57.1 million in China, where a new COVID-19 crisis is unfolding.
The big question now: will the pricey 20th Century/Disney tentpole ride the waves and become the hero of the Christmas box office, or drift into dangerous waters financially? Cameron himself has said The Way of Water will need to earn in the $2 billion range to be considered a success, although the breakeven number is closer to $1 billion, according to a film financier.
“Can James Cameron pull the rabbit out of the hat for the third time? I wouldn’t be against him,” says the source.
The refrain was the same across Hollywood on Sunday as the opening numbers came. Ditto for Wall Street box office analysts. “Avatar: The Way of the Water is an event movie. It’s going to be a marathon not a sprint,” says an optimistic Eric Handler of MKM Partners, noting that every day between Christmas and New Year is like a Saturday. And, on top of an A CinemaScore, the film earned glowing exit scores on PostTrak.
Adds a rival studio distribution executive, “a $441.6 million global debut is pretty good.”
The issue — The Way of Water if one of the most expensive movies ever made, with an estimated production budget of more than $400 million and a marketing spend that brings the total price tag to at least $600 million, according to sources. It also runs three hours and 12 minutes, whereas the first Avatar ran 30 minutes shorter (and cost less).
In December 2009, the first Avatar opened to a relatively modest $77 million on its way to grossing $2.92 billion globally (that includes rereleases). The movie marked a high for the advent of modern-day 3D.
The Way of Water marks a resurgence of 3D after it fell out of favor in the years since 2009. Roughly 57 percent of ticket buyers in North America paid an upcharge to see in Cameron’s preferred format; and 66 percent of international audiences do so. Moreover, Cameron is a boon for premium cinema, whether Imax or the myriad of premium large format brands offered by the major circuits. All told, the majority of ticket buyers in the U.S. opted to pay more money for an upgraded experience, yet there is only so much capacity. Whether this proves exclusionary for more budget-conscious moviegoers remains to be seen.
Says Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore: “Of course there is the option to see the film in 2D, but that’s sort of like drinking an expensive wine of out of a paper cut so to fully enjoy Cameron’s vision, it’s best advised to see it in one of a myriad of premium formats and this presents both a challenge and an opportunity for the film’s revenue-generating power.”

DC Studios boss James Gunn recently clarified why actor Henry Cavill will not be returning to the role of Superman for his upcoming film about the superhero.
Gunn announced on December 14th, “Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year.”
“Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill,” he declared.
Gunn then added, “But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”
In response to a query by a fan as to why Cavill is being recast, Gunn responded, “As I said yesterday, it is very simple, he’s a different age.”
When challenged by another user that Gunn was making an origin story, he denied it writing, “Also as I said yesterday, I am definitely not doing an origin story.”
James Gunn Twitter
After being challenged by the user again, Gunn would then reveal that Superman’s “not meeting the major characters for the first time, either. He’s merely younger.”

Gunn would also provide more details about his plans for the DCU.
In response to one user’s query about Batman, Gunn confirmed the character will play a major role in his DCU plans writing, “He’s a big part of the DCU.”
James Gunn Twitter
Gunn also revealed that his DCU plans will not be solely focused on major DC Comics characters like Superman and Batman, but will also explore lesser known characters.
He tweeted, “We’ll be focusing on the most well-known and some lesser known characters simultaneously.”

Cavil is only 39 years old. So it’s more than likely Gunn, Peter Safran, and DC Studios will be looking to cast someone in their early 20s for their Superman film.
What do you make of Gunn’s explanation as to why Cavill is out?

Total PANIC! AVATAR 2 Will NOT BREAK EVEN! Doing Less Than Wakanda Forever & China Can't Save Them!
Bob Iger has his first major disappointment to deal with (after wakanda forever's weak numbers). Avatar Way of Water will not hit the $2 billion they need to break even theatrically. They will make up revenue in other markets like streaming and other licensing, but it will not be the success they needed according to James Cameron's own estimates of needing $2 billion at the worldwide box office. There will be an Avatar 3, because its already completed, but there won't be an Avatar 4 or 5. It's done.

Avatar 2 Bombing With Friday Box Office
https://cosmicbook.news/avatar-2-bombing-with-friday-box-office
Again, all I can start off with is wow as even I am shocked, as Avatar 2 is completely bombing at the box office with its Friday numbers estimated to be a complete disaster which means the weekend will also be a colossal failure.
The trades originally pegged (hoped) Avatar 2 would open to as high as $200 million domestically or more, with the low estimates at $175 million, but the numbers don’t look to be anywhere close.
Avatar 2 The Way of Water box office
Avatar 2 weekend box office now estimated $120M-$150M
It’s now estimated Avatar 2 will be lucky to hit $150 million for the weekend with even $120 million possible.
This after James Cameron has let it be known that Avatar: The Way of Water needs to hit $2 billion just to break even.
Recall while the Hollywood trades were offering the flick was going to open sky high, I reported how Avatar 2 was actually tracking less than the $181 million box office of Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – so no spin here – and Wakanda Forever will be lucky to hit $800 million.
And get this! Deadline actually spins things for the low box office in that “audiences are waiting to secure ideal seats in a premium format” instead of going to see the movie this weekend, a movie that is over 3 hours long! Yeah, sure!
Jeff Sneider also said Cameron recently turned in a cut of Avatar 3 which is 9 hours long and that Cameron wants all the VFX done before he makes his final cut!
Avatar 2 friday box office
Avatar 2 Friday box office is only $55 million
Regarding the Friday box office, which includes the $17 million from Thursday, Avatar 2 is estimated to bring in only $55 million.
Update: The Friday box office comes in lower at $53 million.
As I pointed out yesterday, the $2 billion Star Wars: The Force Awakens which The Way of the Water needs to match just to break even made $57 million alone on its first Thursday, with the near-$2 billion Spider-Man: No Way from last year bringing in $50 million on its Thursday.
Avatar 2 can barely scratch those numbers in two days and it’s going to make $2 billion? Come on.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens made $119 million for its first Friday and Spider-Man: No Way Home brought in a massive $121.9 million, numbers which match the lower estimates for Avatar 2’s total weekend box office!
Avatar The Way of Water
James Cameron will need an Avatar 2 Christmas miracle just to break even
Can’t compete with Marvel
Similar to the Thursday box office, Avatar 2 also can’t compete on Friday with the three Marvel movies released this year: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($90.7M), Thor: Love and Thunder ($69.5M), and Black Panther Wakanda Forever ($84.2M).
Avatar 2’s Friday box office is more in line with The Batman ($56.6M) which opened to $134 million and finished with a worldwide box office of $770.8 million.
The Way of Water Thursday’s box office is also in line with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and so is the Friday number, as GOTG2 opened with a Friday box office of $56 million and a weekend box office of $146 million.
I’ve also said comparing the sequel to the first movie is pointless as these are different times and the sequel is nothing new under the sun, but the first Avatar in 2009 only brought in $26.7 million and opened to only $77 million and went on to bring in a huge $2.743 billion haul worldwide.
I just can’t see the sequel having the same legs as the first movie especially internationally where the first movie made almost $2 billion (domestically it brought in almost $750 million).

TOTAL PANIC AT MARVEL! CANCELLING DISNEY+ Shows Scheduled To Film Last Month?!?!
Marvel is cancelling Disney+ shows and calling them 'temporarily delayed'. Agatha Coven of Chaos was supposed to start filming October 2022 and has now been delayed to 2025, while "Echo" is now also delayed after they cancelled "Armor Wars". What exactly is going on at Marvel????

Exclusive: Agatha Marvel Series Delayed To 2025
https://www.giantfreakinrobot.com/ent/agatha-marvel-series-pushed-back.html
any are starting to feel superhero “fatigue” which also includes one of the bigger purveyors of the genre, Marvel. Through our trusted and proven sources, we can report that the Agatha: Coven of Chaos Marvel series is now being delayed to 2025. This is not at all shocking, as the MCU brass has been reportedly not happy with how Phase Four has panned out, so the company is shifting to provide more “quality over quantity” for the Phase Five and Six plans.
The Agatha Marvel series is arguably one of the most anticipated titles that fans are genuinely excited about, however, not seeing this series for another few years is not the worst news. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been steadily releasing shows and movies for a bit too long at this point, and some have been rather lacking in terms of their overall stories. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever aside, the MCU needs some definite reshuffling.
The Agatha Marvel series was meant to be part of the Phase Five rollout and was aimed to be released in the fall of 2023, or in early 2024. However, now that the series is being pushed back by another year or so, it could mean that Marvel has grander plans for what is going to take place within the story of the series. We would imagine those plans could involve the Scarlet Witch, as it has been rumored that she is set to return to the MCU sooner rather than later.
kathryn hahn wandavision
Agatha played a big part in the WandaVision story, and Marvel is likely now wanting to bring Kathryn Hahn back in a much bigger way. She was the villain behind making Wanda feel like she couldn’t live without her fake children and life in Westview. However, now that the MCU has also turned her into an obsessive psychopath, Wanda’s psycho spell can once again be linked back to Agatha.
Another big reason for the Agatha Marvel series being pushed back has everything to do with the number of releases that we have been seeing over the past couple of years, which has undoubtedly led to Marvel Studios wanting to take a big step back. A staggering seven movies and eight shows have been released since 2021. This has led to a drop in quality that has been felt by the studio and fans alike.
Granted, 2023 is going to still bring Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, and The Marvels to theaters, but those might just be the bigger stories that are needed to tie into this new Multiverse Saga more than other properties. The shows slated for next year were Agatha: Coven of Chaos, Daredevil: Born Again, Secret Invasion, Echo, Loki Season 2, Ironheart, and X-Men ’97, making for what would have been another huge Marvel release slate. Everything is arguably important to the grand story happening, except for X-Men ’97.
While it might be a bit of a bummer that Agatha is being pushed back in favor of other Marvel releases, it could end up being the best move possible. Maybe now the VFX workers will not be overworked and will provide us with some great magic battles. We want to see Wanda vs Agatha again.

James Gunn Superman Movie Details: No Origin, Younger Actor
https://cosmicbook.news/james-gunn-superman-movie-details-no-origin-younger-actor
Jason Momoa, Zachary Levi, the fans, and more react to the news that Henry Cavill is done as Superman as James Gunn is developing a new take on the Man of Steel.
Momoa starred alongside Henry Cavill in the Justice League movies with the pair a major staple of the Zack Snyder DCEU.
Wednesday saw the news that Henry Cavill is no longer playing Superman which means Man of Steel 2 has been canceled, as the new co-head of the DCU, James Gunn, is developing and writing a new take on Superman which includes going with a younger actor in the role.
“I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman,” said Cavill in an announcement made on Instgram. “The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter [Safran] have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.”
Gunn also tweeted, “In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill. But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”
Henry Cavill played Superman for a decade, since prior to the release of Man of Steel which debuted in 2013, and Cavill was set to return following appearing in Black Adam. But what happened is that James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over DC Studios changed everything, as Gunn and Safran have their own ideas for Superman and the DCU.
Henry Cavill as Superman
Jason Momoa, Zachary Levi, more react to Henry Cavill no longer playing Superman
Since the actor just announced that he was back in the role and that Man of Steel 2 was in early development, fans are shocked, to say the least.
Aquaman star Jason Momoa replied to Henry Cavill’s Instagram post with four big red heart emojis and “love u brother.”
Deadpool creator Rob Liefield is upset by the news and commented, “BRUTAL!!! Awful news! You were my favorite portrayal of Superman! Thank you Henry!”
MidTown Comics, a popular comic book shop in Manhattan, also commented, “We’re very sorry to hear it, Henry, you’re our Superman!”
Patrick Tatopoulos, the production designer on Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, replied, “🙌🙌🙌!!!!”
Hiram Garcia, the head of Dwayne Johnson’s Seven Bucks Production company, and the brother to Dany Garcia (Johnson’s former wife, business partner, and manager to Cavill), said, “You will always be the Superman of our generation brother. Always.”
Dany Garcia commented, “You are and will always be our Superman and you are, of course so much more. Here’s to the brilliance that lies before you.”
Natalie Viscuso, Cavill’s girlfriend, also responded with a big blue heart emoji, “Always the gentleman..”
Boss Logic, who whipped up Black Adam vs Superman fan art for Dwayne Johnson is also shocked and said, “We this a damn shame. So sorry to hear this man…… Don’t know what to say.”
Zachary Levi, who plays Shazam, said, “Hope to catch you in another universe, sir.”
Kumail Nanjiani, known for Marvel’s Eternals, said, “I’m sorry to hear this but I’m excited to see whatever you do next. Lovely meeting you the other night.”
Comic book artist Tony Daniel said, “You were an amazing Superman, can’t wait to see what you do in the coming years.”
My own reaction?
I tweeted Gunn I hope his take on Superman is better than the Brightburn movie he produced for his brothers which is a pretty bad take on an evil version of the character.
I did think a DC reboot was coming but I thought maybe Henry Cavill would be able to at least play the character one more time in Man of Steel 2 which would have been a much more joyful take on the character instead of what Zack Snyder did by giving us a depressed and brooding version that isn’t like by a lot of the Superman fans and led to all this mess of things.

Indiana Jones 5 Has A New Ending Hints John Williams
https://cosmicbook.news/indiana-jones-5-new-ending-john-williams
All those rumors might actually be right as Indiana Jones 5 might be getting a new ending if composer Johns Williams’ recent comments are anything to go by.
Williams recently appeared in Italy (via YouTube) to show off his score and stated something interesting, as Williams said, “So we have just about completed the film. We have maybe another ending to shoot and to record, maybe in a couple weeks.”
Williams doesn’t continue with additional details, but worth pointing out is that Williams confirms the movie isn’t finished just yet and says there is “another ending,” which suggests the ending isn’t set in stone.
That also sounds like they are fixing the ending.
Recall the rumors have offered that the Indiana Jones 5 test screenings are worse than thought.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge Indiana Jones 5
What are the Indiana Jones 5 rumors about?
The rumors offer that every ending shows Phoebe Waller-Bridge replacing Harrison Ford at the request of Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and that Phoebe Waller-Bridge insults Harrison Ford throughout the entire movie.
The worst version of the ending is said to show a young Harrison Ford as Indy getting killed off in the past where Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Helena picks up the whip and puts on the fedora and replaces Harrison Ford and becomes the new Indiana Jones.
So since Phoebe Waller-Bridge replaces Indy in the past, that means she is the Indiana Jones going forward and has always been Indiana Jones.
Director James Mangold has shot down those time travel replacement rumors, but per what John Williams has to say above, they are still working on the ending to the film.
“One more time. No one is ‘taking over’ or replacing Indy or donning his hat nor is he being ‘erased’ thru some contrivance,” Mangold tweeted. “And he never was, not not in any cut or script — but trolls will troll — that’s how they get their clicks.”
Mangold continued, “And please don’t exhaust me pointing out how once in a while a troll is ‘right.’ Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now & then. All one has to do is look at set photos & interviews & you get enough info to make wild guesses about a movie plot,” he said. “The diff between trolling a-holes & everyone else is they are trying to make [money] off your feelings about other films & culture war politics. They push controversial guesses as coming from ‘sources’ to gin up clicks. Let it go. END.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter‘s unofficial announcement of the film’s cancellation, the decision to pass on Jenkins’ treatment for WW3 was made because it “did not fit in with the new (but still unfolding) plans” that newly appointed DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran had for Warner Bros. But on December 9th, this story would be undercut by fellow entertainment news outlet The Wrap.
Reporting on information allegedly relayed to them by their insiders sources, the outlet claimed that rather than amicably accepting the studios’ decision, Jenkins actually responded to the news by voluntarily exiting the project.

Once the actor/director was seen on the Warner Bros. lot with Jason Momoa, who plays Aquaman in the upcoming superhero movie, the Bat was out of the bag and the latter star joyfully revealed on Instagram Affleck put on the cowl one more time for a cameo. It was suspected he was filling in for Michael Keaton who, until lately, was pegged as the replacement Batman for the extended universe.
An outcome set up by The Flash, it’s all changing under the management of David Zaslav and Warner Bros. Discovery and they may have changed their minds about Affleck as well as Keaton. This is what Twitter user @Z_Zz0zz (TwoFace – TF) indicates on social media. The user alleges Affleck’s start-up production company is hindering negotiations with the studio so “no Batman in the latest cut of Aquaman 2.”
@Z_Zz0zz weighs in on Ben Affleck’s role in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom via Twitter
“Due to Ben Affleck’s movements in the creation of the new production company with Matt Damon, Negotiations for Ben Affleck to return to suit permanently in dcu have been frozen,” TF claims. “So there is no Batman in the latest cut of [Aquaman] 2.” The scooper adds a “recast is being considered” as improbable as that sounds.
Whatever choice WBD makes, or whoever, The Batman star Robert Pattinson won’t be part of the equation, TwoFace says, theorizing, “the chances of Robert Pattison taking over the dcu are slim as it would destroy everything Matt Reeves established in the batman,” further adding, “such an idea is described as an ‘affront’ to the creators of the batman universe.”

TF was soon asked their sources and after saying “Me,” the account then claimed they have “colleagues who are involved with DC.” Clearly, names are protected for the sake of privacy whether or not the claims can be substantiated, but that isn’t stopping comments from accusing TwoFace of making things up — which is a reasonable reaction.

After invoking “colleagues,” the TF account dug in their heels and noted that the Affleck news is a scoop that they don’t get money or fame from reporting. “I don’t need to prove anything, there’s no one, I don’t make money from it and I don’t even get fame,” TwoFace wrote, and they are not alone either.

Aside from this one Twitter account, other more reputable sources are backing up the story. One of them is noteworthy exclusive breaker KC Walsh of Geeks WorldWide, who hears and reports the same thing about Affleck – with the addendum Willem Dafoe won’t be back either but we’re stuck with Amber Heard. “Heard is unchanged, no Affleck no DaFoe,” Walsh clarified.
We previously reported Heard was staying in Aquaman 2 to fulfill critical action sequences and scenes that wouldn’t be at all practical or the same without her. Walsh is corroborating this as well as this latest bit that Ben Affleck won’t be given the same courtesy, and neither will a Batman. “He wasn’t in the movie,” Walsh later tweeted.

Not wanting to give anything away since the movie doesn’t come out for another year, Walsh would only say, “Without spoiling anything I’ll just say they cut a major scene and it appears the Bruce Wayne scene is no longer necessary.” He gloats about this development a little earlier in his thread “as bad news for YouTube grifters.

SANDMAN SEASON 2 CANCELLED? Neil Gaiman Says No, But Warner Bros 'Pauses' All New Netflix Shows!
An article came out in Deadline explaining David Zaslav has paused selling shows to Netflix (which likely includes Sandman season 2) because he's pushing back on the poor payment terms that take 2 years to pay him when he delivers shows to Netflix. Neil Gaiman put out a tweet saying it's no problem and the deal is already done, but if that's the case, why is there no official word from Netflix or Warner Bros?

New Streaming War Brewing? Warner Bros. Discovery Boss David Zaslav Takes Aim At Netflix Over Payment Terms
https://deadline.com/2022/12/new-streaming-war-brewing-warner-bros-discovery-boss-david-zaslav-takes-aim-at-netflix-over-payment-terms-1235192453/
SANDMAN DEAD? Neil Gaiman Says No But No Official Word! Cameron Says Avatar Can Be As Big As Marvel?
The Warner Bros. Discovery boss has been railing against his rival’s payment terms in a move that could potentially open up a new front in the streaming wars.
It’s a topic that has come to the fore after one big TV series – The Sandman, the Warner Bros. Television-produced fantasy drama was recently renewed for a second season at Netflix.
The crux of the issue is that Zaslav is unhappy with the way that Netflix deals are structured, essentially paying producers over the course of 18 to 24 months. This is not a new discovery, Netflix changed the way that it parses payments a few years ago.

But Zaslav is now in charge of one of its largest outside suppliers – Warner Bros. Television, which in addition to Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman, makes Netflix originals such as Sweet Tooth, which comes from Robert Downey Jr., Penn Badgley-fronted serial killer thriller You, and most recently Manifest, which it saved after it was canceled by NBC. Through the studio’s previous output deal for CW content, Netflix also licenses a slew of WBTV shows including some of its most popular library titles such as All American, The Flash, Riverdale and Supernatural.
Zaslav is understood to have expressed his displeasure to a number of his key Warner Bros. Discovery colleagues over the last few weeks with some business consequences.
For instance, we hear that he instructed his teams to pause selling finished shows to Netflix for a few weeks.
“It’s an odd way of looking at it,” one Warner Bros. Discovery insider told Deadline. “It’s obviously the way the industry works and has worked with Netflix. He’s paid big numbers [by Netflix] and the company has been happy with that. It’s like he suddenly discovered what the payment terms were.”
Warner Bros. Discovery also recently secured new payments for a number of its shows from Netflix when it launched its ad-tier, paying the studio for the rights to sell adverts within a number of its shows.
Zaslav is a famously hands-on boss and his unhappiness with the rival streamer comes after The Sandman renewal.
Despite its hefty budget, one would have expected a relatively straightforward — and quick — deal for the show, which comes from Gaiman, David S. Goyer and Allan Heinberg and is produced by Warner Bros. Television in association with DC Entertainment, after it was watched for around 200M hours in its first ten days. The season two pickup instead came three months after the show was released.
These are not new issues for television producers. In fact, Discovery, pre-Warner Bros. merger, faced its own backlash after it tried to implement a new payment model, spearheaded by now Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels, that would see producers having to finance shows themselves and take out loans to cover production costs before receiving payment on delivery.

‘Superman’ Is DC Studios’ ‘Biggest Priority,’ James Gunn Says
https://www.thewrap.com/superman-dc-biggest-priority-james-gunn-says/
DC Studios Chief James Gunn took to Twitter to commemorate the 44th anniversary of Richard Donner’s classic “Superman: The Movie” and reiterated to fans that “Superman is a huge priority, if not the biggest priority.”
Now that Gunn is overseeing and planning the next decade of DC Studios movies, a fan asked him if they were going to see a Superman.
His response: “Yes of course. Superman is a huge priority, if not the biggest priority.”
It has been a busy few weeks for the Man of Steel as Henry Cavill recently made an appearance as Superman in the “Black Adam” post-credit scene. However, both Dwayne Johnson and Cavill took to Twitter to announce that Superman is back, but as TheWrap previously reported, there is currently no deal in place at the moment for Cavill to star as Superman in future DC Studios movies.
According to numerous insiders with knowledge of the situation, although it has been previously reported that the search for a writer was currently underway, the fact is there’s currently no writer or director attached to the project and there’s currently no formal deal with Cavill to return.
On Friday, the Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog revealed that “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight wrote a treatment for a “Man of Steel” sequel back in September that wasn’t going forward as Gunn and DC Studios’ co-chief Peter Safran arrived last month to set DC’s house in order.
Additionally, according to an insider, as it currently stands, there’s no forward momentum on the Superman project while Gunn and Safran have been busy fine-tuning their long-range plan for the DCU.
Gunn and Safran are pitching their DCU plan to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav this week, and it is now certain that Superman will return. The question is whether Cavill will don the cape, or it will be a new actor. Stay tuned.

DISNEY CFO ACTING LIKE DISNEY CEO, While Bob Iger Is Busy Staying Woke And Pushing Gun Control!?!?!
Disney’s Christine McCarthy seems to be in control of Disney now. She's just the CFO, but they fired the former CEO based on her demand it was her or him, while Bob Iger seems to be focused on keeping Disney woke and gun control for the masses.

Disney’s Christine McCarthy Emerges As Top CEO Contender To Succeed Bob Iger; CFO Was King Killer Who Took Down Bob Chapek
https://deadline.com/2022/12/disney-bob-iger-christine-mccarthy-ceo-successor-bob-chapek-1235190043/
The number of CFOs being promoted to CEOs hits an all-time high
https://fortune.com/2022/09/29/cfos-promoted-ceos-all-time-high/
With the unexpected return of Bob Iger last month for a new stint as Disney CEO, the entertainment giant’s veteran chief financial officer Christine McCarthy has emerged as a leading contender to take over the top job.
“Christine has always been a force to be reckoned with, but you have to put her on a list of top five possibilities after the last few weeks,” a Disney insider said of the now prominent CFO. If McCarthy was handed the keys to the Magic Kingdom in the next 23 months, the exec would occupy a historic position as the first female CEO in Disney’s soon to be more than 100 year existence.
CFOs are key managers but more often than not low profile, working behind the scenes, emerging during earnings season and the occasional investor conference. Rarely do they take center stage, especially in the heat of battle leading the troops into a messy ouster of their boss — and rarer still do they become a king killer.
That’s what happened, however, with McCarthy, the longtime Disney treasurer who became CFO in 2015.
A steady hand in the previous Iger regime and when Chapek was in charge, McCarthy was influential in helping to successfully engineer a string of key mergers, and adept at raising and husbanding cash during the depth of Covid.
Yet, on November 20, the CFO became the public face of the Disney coup d’état. Distraught by the company’s dire bottom line and missteps by Chapek over the last 18 months, McCarthy is the executive whose name is now in the history books for going to the board and its chair Susan Arnold to orchestrate a revolt in the executive suite that brought Iger back after less than a year of official retirement.
Going to Arnold in mid-November, McCarthy, one of the highest-ranking women in the entertainment industry, threatened to resign if Chapek was not cut loose immediately.
“In the 35 years I’ve been doing this, I never saw a CFO go around a CEO,” said one longtime Wall Street analyst, with a tinge of amazement in his voice weeks after McCarthy cut the knees out from under Chapek and his reign of error.
Now Iger, who had handpicked Chapek in late 2019 before quickly souring on the former head of parks and resorts, has just under two years to pick and position a viable successor. In that vein, it’s not surprising the CFO’s name appears in the top five list of talked about candidates for the future CEO job. However, with Iger’s successor track record in mind, that list, which some have placed Dana Walden, chair of Disney General Entertainment Content on too, needs to be trimmed down to one name pronto.
Reality is there aren’t a lot of seasoned executives in or out of the Disney pipeline that have the institutional memory, board relationships, and leadership chops to avoid on the job training and a repeat of the Chapek experiment.
Fact is Tom Staggs’ stunning exit in 2016 as chief operating officer, and streaming kingpin Kevin Mayer’s subsequent departure in 2020 thinned out the Disney upper ranks — before Chapek was tipped as CEO by Iger. Even with scant talent and creative credentials, that pruning leaves McCarthy in a strong position, one media banker noted recently. To varying degrees, the anointed Staggs and golden boy Mayer had both been considered successors to Iger and both left after being passed over and iced out. It’s unlikely, however, that either could move back to the company and the top job unless Disney agreed to buy out Candle Media, a lucrative venture the friends and former colleagues launched with backing from Blackstone.
Analysts and fund managers really liked Staggs, who was also the CFO for years, and are fans of the current chief financial officer, calling McCarthy “very honest,” “very capable” and “a straight shooter.”
“She really shined when the pandemic hit. She did exactly what the CFO should do. She lined up enough cash for one to two years of no revenue. She put together a huge bundle of cash at reasonable rates very quickly to protect the company,” said one.

ZASLAV BLASTS NETFLIX! Makes Him WAIT TWO YEARS To GET PAID For SANDMAN Episodes!?!?! No Good.
Warner Bros CEO David Zaslav is unhappy with the way that Netflix deals are structured, essentially paying producers over the course of 18 to 24 months for a limited profit on productions (usually 20% over production costs). Zaslav told his executives to stop selling shows to Netflix for at least 3 weeks. He wants a new deal and he wants it now.

PATTY JENKINS QUIT WONDER WOMAN IN A TANTRUM! Refused To Make Script Changes And Attacked Bosses!

Patty Jenkins, the director for the recently canceled Wonder Woman 3, really didn't get along with Warner Bros. (WB) when it came time for them to offer their notes on her treatment for the DCU project.
Recently, despite Gal Gadot having teased her third film a day before the announcement, Wonder Woman 3 was scrapped by WB. Needless to say, this shocked many.
In response to the news breaking across the web, DCU co-lead James Gunn commented that "some of [the report] is true, some of it is half-true, [and] some of it is not true."
Now, some more information about how the decision came to be has been revealed, and it doesn't paint Jenkins in the best light.
Warner Bros. & Patty Jenkins Get Petty
Wonder Woman Movie
DC
In a new report from The Wrap, Patty Jenkins and Warner Bros. did not agree at all on the direction of Wonder Woman 3, with the director going as far as to send a petty, passive-aggressive email.
According to the outlet, Warner Bros. executives Mike DeLuca and Pamela Abdy reached out to Patty Jenkins, the director of the late Wonder Woman 3, and told her that they "didn't think [the third film's script] was the right direction for the franchise."
They then asked her if she'd consider "pitching something else for the IP in another direction."
The Wrap's source revealed that Jenkins refused and told the two that "they were wong, that they didn't understand her, didn't understand the character, didn't understand character arcs and didn't understand what Jenkins was trying to."
The director even sent an email to the executives that included a link to the Wikipedia article about "Character arc."
Warner Bros. then made it clear that if she ever wanted to pitch something different, they'd listen. As expected, Jenkins "stood firm to her vision," letting the studio know that if they weren't going to take her treatment, she'd just move on to her next film.
The report also revealed how Jenkins didn't want to hear anything that Peter Safran, the new co-lead of the DCU at WB, had to say. However, he actually had nothing to do with the choice of not moving forward with that particular version of Wonder Woman 3.
The Wrap's insider elaborated on how the filmmaker doesn't want to hear anything the newly installed DCU lead had to say:
“She just doesn’t want to allow them to have a seat at the table to have an opinion on something new that she might come up with"
According to the outlet, neither Jenkins' representatives nor Warner Bros. offered comments on the situation.
Jenkins Leaves Wonder Woman
It would seem that Patty Jenkins really isn't having a good time with all these regime changes at WB.
The volatile and shifting landscape is understandably frustrating, but it still feels unexpected for Jenkins to walk away from the character entirely. This choice probably hits harder for her as well, as she dropped out of Paramount's Cleopatra to focus on Rogue Squadron and Wonder Woman 3—both of which have been canned.
With those three projects out of the way, her next one is completely unknown. Having such high-profile movies being abandoned not too long after each other probably doesn't look too great for the director.
As for Wonder Woman herself, Gal Gadot's future in the DCU is also unknown. Her recent tweet suggests she's more than up for more appearances, but it'll be up to James Gunn and Peter Safran to decide what they'll do with the character.
Gal Gadot's next full outing as Wonder Woman is unknown, but she will supposedly be making a cameo in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which debuts in theaters worldwide on March 17, 2023; The Flash would be another likelihood when it lands on June 23.

James Gunn Responds To DC Reboot News and Rumors
https://cosmicbook.news/james-gunn-responds-dc-reboot-news-rumors
James Gunn responds to yesterday’s big DC news and rumors about a potential reboot and the cancellation of Wonder Woman 3 and the Justice League actors and characters.
THR offered up Wonder Woman 3 is dead and that Patty Jenkins’ script has been rejected, with the article also hinting that the new co-heads of the DCU, James Gunn and Peter Safran, are wanting to reboot the DCU and recast, which would mean Henry Cavill is done as Superman and Man of Steel 2 isn’t happening, Ben Affleck is done as Batman, Jason Momoa will stop playing Aquaman and will play Lobo, and Gal Gadot is also done as Wonder Woman.
The article also said Black Adam sequels are in doubt, which actually saw Dwayne Johnson respond on social media by tweeting an article stating Black Adam will be profitable and that “it’s all noise.”
It’s also been said the Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson The Batman projects are safe from Gunn’s grasp.
DC Comics Kingdom Come
James Gunn responds to DC News:
Following the release of the article, James Gunn was rather quiet on Twitter but responded a few hours ago where worth a mention is that Gunn again teases Kindom Come, which just might that, a tease, and simply might mean that a new “kingdom” is coming and not that Gunn is adapting the story.
“So. As for the story yesterday in the Hollywood Reporter, some of it is true, some of it is half-true, some of it is not true, & some of it we haven’t decided yet whether it’s true or not,” Gunn said.
He continued, “Although this first month at DC has been fruitful, building the next ten years of story takes time & we’re still just beginning.”
Gunn added, “Peter & I chose to helm DC Studios knowing we were coming into a fractious environment, both in the stories being told & in the audience itself & there would be an unavoidable transitional period as we moved into telling a cohesive story across film, TV, animation, and gaming.”
Gunn tweeted, “But, in the end, the drawbacks of that transitional period were dwarfed by the creative possibilities & the opportunity to build upon what has worked in DC so far & to help rectify what has not.
“We know we are not going to make every single person happy every step of the way, but we can promise everything we do is done in the service of the STORY & in the service of the DC CHARACTERS we know you cherish and we have cherished our whole lives,” he said.
Gunn concluded, “As for more answers about the future of the DCU, I will sadly have to ask you to wait. We are giving these characters & the stories the time & attention they deserve & we ourselves still have a lot more questions to ask & answer.”

BLACK ADAM FRAUD! Black Adam Made $52 to $72 Million, No It Was Not A Flop. Variety Lied To Us!
Dwayne Johnson DC Pic ‘Black Adam’ To Profit: Here’s How
https://deadline.com/2022/12/dwayne-johnson-black-adam-box-office-profit-1235191135/
There’s some snarking going on out there that Black Adam is poised to lose $50M-$100M, and that is simply just not true. Deadline film finance sources, meaning people who do this for a living and those close to the film, say this movie is bound to break even and be in the black. Scroll down to see how.
With a global gross of $390M, a $195M production cost and a P&A spend between $80M-$100M, the Dwayne Johnson DC/New Line film is looking to net between $52M-$72M.
RELATED STORY

‘Black Adam’ action figure, courtesy Deadline
Also not included in that amount is an extra source of cash from Black Adam merchandise.
All of this, including a B+ CinemaScore, is good enough for Black Adam to be a franchise starter (read: the first Captain America made $370M WW). As far as how the DC universe will be mapped out, we’ll know more early next year when the studio’s new heads Peter Safran and James Gunn unveil the news.
Black Adam repped Johnson’s biggest solo opening stateside at $67M, clearly one of the financial models that Warner Bros. had in mind when it was strategizing the P&L on this film. In a very dry fall marketplace without any tentpoles due the post-production logjam created by Covid, Black Adam was the biggest movie of the season, notching No. 1 for three weeks in a row around the world before Disney/Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever arrived.
RELATED: ‘Black Adam’ Rocks Past $300M Worldwide
“I have read the claims that Black Adam will lose money. That is false,” exclaimed producer and financier Joe Singer, who deals greatly in motion picture slate financing, “The picture may be considered disappointing since it had Dwayne Johnson in a DC film. However, the picture will pass break-even and throw off a bit of profit.”
‘Hobbs & Shaw’
Universal Pictures
Was Black Adam as big as Hobbs & Shaw, which yielded an $84M profit after all ancillaries? No, but you need to remember that the Fast & Furious spinoff had Russia and didn’t face the headwinds of a strong dollar overseas. Hobbs & Shaw also had the benefit of China, where Johnson is big, the pic making $201M (note the theatrical rental return back to the U.S. is only around 25%, and there’s no home market in the PRC). China has sidelined several U.S. blockbuster titles in the wake of Covid. These factors couldn’t have been forecast when Black Adam was greenlighted.
However, working in Black Adam‘s favor is a thriftier marketing budget to Universal’s $140M push of Hobbs & Shaw. How is that? There’s been some intense cost-crunching going on at Warner Bros Discovery, which is mired in debt and going through rounds of layoffs. Black Adam put the bulk of its spending in digital marketing over linear, teed off by Johnson’s massive social media bullhorn, which has a reach of nearly a half-billion followers across TikTok, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.
Also factor in shorter theatrical windowson movies nowadays, which enables the studio to stretch their marketing dollars. PVOD for the film is hitting at a time when the pic is still in theaters and outdoor ads are still around. Black Adam is dropping on HBO Max on Dec. 16, after a 57-day window, a long-enough frame to maximize theatrical, PVOD and sellthrough dollars. The swing factor in the net profit here on Black Adam: Warners contends that it spent $80M on global P&A, which would get the pic to a $72M surplus, whereas the $100M contended by other sources lands the pic at a $52M profit.

DISNEY CRUSHED By UNIVERSAL In Animated Box Office THREE YEARS IN A ROW! Can Disney Still Compete?
How Disney Animation Lost the Box Office Crown to Universal for 3 Straight Years – With No Turnaround in Sight

NBC Universal CEO Jeff Shell on Monday trumpeted his studio’s achievement. “I honestly think that not only are we challenging Disney Animation, but I would take our animation business over theirs right now,” he said on a conference call with investors. “We have an animation system now that rivals if not surpasses Disney.”

And Universal is following Disney’s costly “Strange World” flop with this month’s “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” which has scored rave reviews (93% fresh and 8.3/10 on Rotten Tomatoes) and is tracking for a $20 million opening weekend and a healthy run through the holiday season.
The contrast in box office performance has been stark. Disney’s “Encanto” ($256 million) earned one-third less in late 2021/early 2022 than Universal’s “Sing 2” ($407 million), while Disney/Pixar’s “Lightyear” ($226 million) eventually earned less than both of Universal animated films from this spring and summer: Illumination’s “Minions: The Rise of Gru” ($937 million) and DreamWorks Animations’ “The Bad Guys” ($250 million).
And Disney can’t even blame pandemic conditions for the deficit since every studio faced the same issues with families reluctant to return to theaters and hybrid theatrical/streaming releases.
Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon” grossed under $160 million in early 2021 amid a hybrid release (in theaters and also on Disney+ for an extra $30) months after Universal and DreamWorks’ “The Croods: A New Era” legged out to $216 million under similar circumstances. However, even Paramount’s “Paw Patrol” movie earned $145 million in theaters while being concurrently available at no charge for subscribers on Paramount+.

Is Disney’s streaming strategy to blame?
Recently bounced Disney CEO Bob Chapek was willing to trade box office revenue (and new theatrical franchises) for streaming gains, sending animated features like “Soul,” “Luca” and “Turning Red” straight to Disney+ in most territories, including the U.S. This was at a time when much live-action production had stalled due to the pandemic and Wall Street was all but forcing entertainment companies to mimic Netflix.
“Universal animated titles are all theatrical propositions and that’s really clear to the consumer,” an individual with knowledge of the animation space told TheWrap. “Disney has muddied the brand so the consumer doesn’t know what film is going where.”
Every major studio had to readjust due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with Sony and Paramount leasing or selling many theatrically-intended films to streaming platforms and Warner Bros.’ “Project Popcorn” offering the studio’s entire 2021 theatrical slate in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously. By 2022, though, Warner Bros. had reverted to a 45-day theatrical window and Sony was offering longer windows for titles like “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Lyle, Lyle Crocodile.”
“When Wall Street was judging these companies based on streaming subscriptions, it made sense to drop top movies on the services,” ScreenMedia founder and chief analyst Colin Dixon told TheWrap. “But now that Wall Street has reverted to judging the bottom line, there’s no such incentive to undercut theatrical and considerable post-theatrical revenue opportunities for the sake of subscription gains.”
According to one rival studio executive, Disney “hurt their triple-A perfect brand” by shuffling so many big-screen titles to its streaming service — and not recommitting to theatrical releases sooner. “Audiences used to see the Pixar logo in a theater, they knew they were seeing the best of what theatrical animation had to offer,” the insider said. “Instead, the Disney+ strategy has merely trained people to know they can just watch it at home.”
