A former Facebook diversity program manager pleaded guilty to scamming the social media giant out of more than $4 million through a scheme in which she faked business deals in exchange for kickbacks, the Justice Department said. Barbara Furlow-Smiles, who served as lead strategist and global head of employee resource groups and diversity engagement at Facebook, used the stolen funds to live an extravagant lifestyle that spanned from California to Georgia, prosecutors said. From approximately January 2017 to September 2021, Furlow-Smiles led Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs at Facebook and was responsible for developing and executing DEI initiatives, operations, and engagement programs,” according to the DOJ. The feds said Furlow-Smiles, who had access to company credit cards and the ability to approve invoices as part of her role at the company, “caused Facebook to pay numerous individuals,” including her friends and relatives, “for goods and services never provided to the company.” Those individuals would later funnel kickbacks to Furlow-Smiles. America First Legal’s (AFL) Center for Legal Equality filed a formal civil rights complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and sent a cease and desist letter to Activision Blizzard, Inc. (Activision) demanding that Activision stop using gender and racial preferences in hiring and internship programs and to again focus on video games that create shareholder value, not promote fringe political ideology. Over the past few decades, they have built a strong reputation in the gaming community for consistently producing high-quality video games. Legal activists seeking to roll back diversity programs have sued big companies such as Comcast , Progressive and Starbucks as well as the government. In reality, many of their lawsuits target programs that aid small businesses. The Wall Street Journal has identified roughly a dozen lawsuits that take aim at programs providing financial support, business opportunities or other services to small businesses owned by entrepreneurs who are Black, Latino or otherwise considered disadvantaged. Plaintiffs say that programs that limit participation to certain racial minorities or other groups are discriminatory, and that they are asking that the aid be open to everyone. Much of the litigation is still in its early stages but the challenges, or threat of them, are beginning to reshape corporate and government assistance aimed at specific groups of entrepreneurs. “The fact that all these lawsuits are going on is creating a shock wave,” said Gary Cunningham, a consultant on entrepreneurship and supplier diversity. Captain Marvel was the first agenda-driven Marvel film, released to push a character in the middle of an otherwise carefully organized 'Marvel Universe' aesthetic that made Marvel the most successful film franchise in history. Woke news broadcaster MSNBC lost 33 percent of its primetime viewers during its coverage of the Israel Hamas war. The outlet's viewer figures were down 24 percent overall for the four days between October 7 and 10 which saw the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas terrorists. By comparison the shocking events saw a leap in Fox News's audience, up 42 percent, and in CNN's coverage, which saw a 17 percent rise in viewers.
