Wim Hof breathing may cause tingling sensations, a ringing in the ears, and/or lightheadedness. These are normal responses and are no cause for alarm. If you faint, however, you have gone too far, and should take it more slowly next time. The cold is a powerful force, and extreme cold can be a shock to your body. Dr. Robert Malone comments on new research that indicates there is no clear evidence that low serotonin levels are responsible for depression which is the basis for the widespread use of antidepressants. What are we getting wrong and how should we be treating depression? Do we have to use pharmaceutical cocktails to treat depression? After noting that depression is a very complex disease, Dr. Malone says that social isolation, and the fragmentation of community, which are exasperated by the misuse/overuse of technology, are major contributors to depression. And today’s interview is a follow-up with the first natural cancer survivor I interviewed, way back in 2011, Cortney Campbell. Cortney was diagnosed with Stage II Nodular Lymphocyte Predominant Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in October of 2008. This is a rare type of lymphoma and at that time she was told there were no conclusive studies on what type of conventional treatment would work. The chemotherapy suggested to her had many concerning side effects, one of which was infertility. While touring the cancer clinic, Kevin heard, “This is not for you.” And that prompted them to look for another way to heal. My Andrew Wakefield Interview The NY Times wrote a hit piece on Andrew Wakefield recently. They couldn't reach him for comment. But I could. He had a lot to say. Turns out we are repeating history. I had the honor to interview him for 90 minutes to get clarity on all the misinformation I’ve heard. He challenged the status quo and paid the price for telling the truth. He exposed the fact that all childhood vaccines are dangerous. Kids who are not vaccinated at all are uniformly better off than kids who are. The childhood vaccines are so dangerous that the CDC refuses to collect the data to show how safe they are. No joke. They know the vaccines are dangerous, collecting data wouldn’t change that. No qualified medical professional has ever agreed to debate RFK Jr. on vaccine safety. The same is true for Andrew Wakefield. That pretty much tells you everything you need to know about the childhood vaccines in a nutshell. They aren’t collecting the needed safety data for the COVID vaccines either. Nobody has a risk-benefit study of these vaccines. In other words, all your doctors telling you to vaccinate your kids: they are doing that with NO DATA to justify their recommendations. If you don’t believe me, ask your doctor for the risk benefit study tracking all-cause morbidity and mortality in two groups (at least 100,000 people). If you find one, let me know in the comments. Using proteins that can turn an adult cell into a stem cell, Sinclair and his team have reset aging cells in mice to earlier versions of themselves. In his team's first breakthrough, published in late 2020, old mice with poor eyesight and damaged retinas could suddenly see again, with vision that at times rivaled their offspring's. "It's a permanent reset, as far as we can tell, and we think it may be a universal process that could be applied across the body to reset our age," said Sinclair, who has spent the last 20 years studying ways to reverse the ravages of time. "If we reverse aging, these diseases should not happen. We have the technology today to be able to go into your hundreds without worrying about getting cancer in your 70s, heart disease in your 80s and Alzheimer's in your 90s." Sinclair told an audience at Life Itself, a health and wellness event presented in partnership with CNN. "This is the world that is coming. It's literally a question of when and for most of us, it's going to happen in our lifetimes," Sinclair told the audience. "His research shows you can change aging to make lives younger for longer. Now he wants to change the world and make aging a disease," said Whitney Casey, an investor who is partnering with Sinclair to create a do-it-yourself biological age test. While modern medicine addresses sickness, it doesn't address the underlying cause, "which for most diseases, is aging itself," Sinclair said. "We know that when we reverse the age of an organ like the brain in a mouse, the diseases of aging then go away. Memory comes back; there is no more dementia. "I believe that in the future, delaying and reversing aging will be the best way to treat the diseases that plague most of us." A Reset Button In Sinclair's lab, two mice sit side by side. One is the picture of youth, the other gray and feeble. Yet they are brother and sister, born from the same litter – only one has been genetically altered to age faster. If that could be done, Sinclair asked his team, could the reverse be accomplished as well? Japanese biomedical researcher Dr. Shinya Yamanaka had already reprogrammed human adult skin cells to behave like embryonic or pluripotent stem cells, capable of developing into any cell in the body. The 2007 discovery won the scientist a Nobel Prize, and his "induced pluripotent stem cells," soon became known as "Yamanaka factors." However, adult cells fully switched back to stem cells via Yamanaka factors lose their identity. They forget they are blood, heart and skin cells, making them perfect for rebirth as "cell du jour," but lousy at rejuvenation. You don't want Brad Pitt in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" to become a baby all at once; you want him to age backward while still remembering who he is. Labs around the world jumped on the problem. A study published in 2016 by researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California, showed signs of aging could be expunged in genetically aged mice, exposed for a short time to four main Yamanaka factors, without erasing the cells' identity. But there was a downside in all this research: In certain situations, the altered mice developed cancerous tumors. Looking for a safer alternative, Sinclair lab geneticist Yuancheng Lu chose three of the four factors and genetically added them to a harmless virus. The virus was designed to deliver the rejuvenating Yamanaka factors to damaged retinal ganglion cells at the back of an aged mouse's eye. After injecting the virus into the eye, the pluripotent genes were then switched on by feeding the mouse an antibiotic. "The antibiotic is just a tool. It could be any chemical really, just a way to be sure the three genes are switched on," Sinclair said. "Normally they are only on in very young developing embryos and then turn off as we age." Amazingly, damaged neurons in the eyes of mice injected with the three cells rejuvenated, even growing new axons, or projections from the eye into the brain. Since that original study, Sinclair said his lab has reversed aging in the muscles and brains of mice and is now working on rejuvenating a mouse's entire body. "Somehow the cells know the body can reset itself, and they still know which genes should be on when they were young," Sinclair said. "We think we're tapping into an ancient regeneration system that some animals use – when you cut the limb off a salamander, it regrows the limb. The tail of a fish will grow back; a finger of a mouse will grow back." That discovery indicates there is a "backup copy" of youthfulness information stored in the body, he added. "I call it the information theory of aging," he said. "It's a loss of information that drives aging cells to forget how to function, to forget what type of cell they are. And now we can tap into a reset switch that restores the cell's ability to read the genome correctly again, as if it was young." While the changes have lasted for months in mice, renewed cells don't freeze in time and never age (like, say, vampires or superheroes), Sinclair said. "It's as permanent as aging is. It's a reset, and then we see the mice age out again, so then we just repeat the process. "We believe we have found the master control switch, a way to rewind the clock," he added. "The body will then wake up, remember how to behave, remember how to regenerate and will be young again, even if you're already old and have an illness." Studies on whether the genetic intervention that revitalized mice will do the same for people are in early stages, Sinclair said. It will be years before human trials are finished, analyzed and, if safe and successful, scaled to the mass needed for a federal stamp of approval. Science Already Knows How To Slow Human Aging While we wait for science to determine if we too can reset our genes, there are many other ways to slow the aging process and reset our biological clocks, Sinclair said. "The top tips are simply: Focus on plants for food, eat less often, get sufficient sleep, lose your breath for 10 minutes three times a week by exercising to maintain your muscle mass, don't sweat the small stuff and have a good social group," Sinclair said. All these behaviors affect our epigenome, proteins and chemicals that sit like freckles on each gene, waiting to tell the gene "what to do, where to do it, and when to do it," according to the National Human Genome Research Institute. The epigenome literally turns genes on and off. What controls the epigenome? Human behavior and one's environment play a key role. Let's say you were born with a genetic predisposition for heart disease and diabetes. But because you exercised, ate a plant-focused diet, slept well and managed your stress during most of your life, it's possible those genes would never be activated. That, experts say, is how we can take some of our genetic fate into our own hands. The positive impact on our health from eating a plant-based diet, having close, loving relationships and getting adequate exercise and sleep are well documented. Calorie restriction, however, is a more controversial way of adding years to life, experts say. Cutting back on food – without inducing malnutrition – has been a scientifically known way to lengthen life for nearly a century. Studies on worms, crabs, snails, fruit flies and rodents have found restricting calories "delay the onset of age-related disorders" such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes, according to the National Institute on Aging. Some studies have also found extensions in life span: In a 1986 study, mice fed only a third of a typical day's calories lived to 53 months – a mouse kept as a pet may live to about 24 months. Studies in people, however, have been less enlightening, partly because many have focused on weight loss instead of longevity. For Sinclair, however, cutting back on meals was a significant factor in resetting his personal clock: Recent tests show he has a biological age of 42 in a body born 53 years ago. "I've been doing a biological test for 10 years now, and I've been getting steadily younger for the last decade," Sinclair said. "The biggest change in my biological clock occurred when I ate less often – I only eat one meal a day now. That made the biggest difference to my biochemistry." Additional Ways To Turn Back The Clock Sinclair incorporates other tools into his life, based on research from his lab and others. In his book "Lifespan: Why We Age and Why We Don't Have To," he writes that little of what he does has undergone the sort of "rigorous long-term clinical testing" needed to have a "complete understanding of the wide range of potential outcomes." In fact, he added, "I have no idea if this is even the right thing for me to be doing." With that caveat, Sinclair is willing to share his tips: He keeps his starches and sugars to a minimum and gave up desserts at age 40 (although he does admit to stealing a taste on occasion). He eats a good amount of plants, avoids eating other mammals and keeps his body weight at the low end of optimal. He exercises by taking a lot of steps each day, walks upstairs instead of taking an elevator and visits the gym with his son to lift weights and jog before taking a sauna and a dip in an ice-cold pool. "I've got my 20-year-old body back," he said with a smile. Speaking of cold, science has long thought lower temperatures increased longevity in many species, but whether it is true or not may come down to one's genome, according to a 2018 study. Regardless, it appears cold can increase brown fat in humans, which is the type of fat bears use to stay warm during hibernation. Brown fat has been shown to improve metabolism and combat obesity. Sinclair takes vitamins D and K2 and baby aspirin daily, along with supplements that have shown promise in extending longevity in yeast, mice and human cells in test tubes. One supplement he takes after discovering its benefits is 1 gram of resveratrol, the antioxidant-like substance found in the skin of grapes, blueberries, raspberries, mulberries and peanuts. He also takes 1 gram of metformin, a staple in the arsenal of drugs used to lower blood sugars in people with diabetes. He added it after studies showed it might reduce inflammation, oxidative damage and cellular senescence, in which cells are damaged but refuse to die, remaining in the body as a type of malfunctioning "zombie cell." However, some scientists quibble about the use of metformin, pointing to rare cases of lactic acid buildup and a lack of knowledge on how it functions in the body. Sinclair also takes 1 gram of NMN, or nicotinamide mononucleotide, which in the body turns into NAD+, or nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. A coenzyme that exists in all living cells, NAD+ plays a central role in the body's biological processes, such as regulating cellular energy, increasing insulin sensitivity and reversing mitochondrial dysfunction. When the body ages, NAD+ levels significantly decrease, dropping by middle age to about half the levels of youth, contributing to age-related metabolic diseases and neurodegenerative disorders. Numerous studies have shown restoring NAD+ levels safely improves overall health and increases life span in yeast, mice and dogs. Clinical trials testing the molecule in humans have been underway for three years, Sinclair said. "These supplements, and the lifestyle that I am doing, is designed to turn on our defenses against aging," he said. "Now, if you do that, you don't necessarily turn back the clock. These are just things that slow down epigenetic damage and these other horrible hallmarks of aging. "But the real advance, in my view, was the ability to just tell the body, 'Forget all that. Just be young again,' by just flipping a switch. Now I'm not saying that we're going to all be 20 years old again," Sinclair said. "But I'm optimistic that we can duplicate this very fundamental process that exists in everything from a bat to a sheep to a whale to a human. We've done it in a mouse. There's no reason I can think of why it shouldn't work in a person, too." ................ Two of the babies died. February 17, 2022, Abbott voluntarily recalled Similac, Alimentum and EleCare powdered formulas manufactured in the Sturgis facility. According to the FDA, the Sturgis facility failed inspection and was ordered to halt production until required sanitary measures were carried out. The FDA inspection came on the heels of a whistleblower report, submitted to the FDA in October 2021, alleging several health and safety compliance issues at the Sturgis facility, including falsification of records; release of untested formula; undermining of an FDA audit in 2019; lax cleaning processes; and the failure to adequately trace its products. Some members of Congress are now calling for an investigation to determine whether the FDA took sufficiently prompt action after receiving this information. Feds Fail To Address Industry Monopoly May 16, 2022, the Biden administration announced5 it had reached a deal to reopen the Abbott plant in about two weeks, which should result in shelves being restocked in another six to eight weeks, but while that may solve the problem in the short term, it does nothing to address the underlying problem, which is the fact that the U.S. baby formula market is monopolized by three companies. A 2011 market analysis8 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) shows these companies accounted for nearly all U.S. formula sales ... "Abbott Nutrition ... dominates the market -- the company's sales accounted for roughly 43% of the formula market ... according to a 2011 USDA report, which contains the latest available figures ... "FDA regulations for baby formula9 make it nearly impossible for parents in the U.S. to buy infant formula produced outside the country ... The issue is this: FDA rules bar formula imports from Europe if the product does not have FDA-compliant nutritional labels. "The formula may be perfectly safe and produced in accordance with European standards that are at least as stringent as U.S. health and safety requirements, but it can't be imported because the FDA has not reviewed and approved what is printed on the package -- a costly and time-consuming process for producers." U.S. Response To The Crisis House Democrats have now approved an emergency spending bill to allocate another $28 million to the FDA to allow it to hire more inspectors and prepare for future baby formula shortages. Some Republicans voiced opposition to the bill, saying it doesn't contain any instructions for how the money is actually supposed to be spent, which would likely render it ineffective, and as of this writing, it's still uncertain whether the bill will pass the Senate. May 18, 2022, Biden invoked the Defense Production Act to increase production. The law allows the president to compel companies that supply various formula ingredients to prioritize the needs of formula manufacturers over other customers. Commercial aircraft owned by the U.S. Defense Department will reportedly be deployed to pick up formula overseas and fly it back to the U.S., in an operation dubbed "Operation Fly Formula." DoD contracts with other commercial air cargo will also be used to speed up imports and distribution. That same day, the House also passed bipartisan legislation to allow WIC recipients to purchase any brand of formula. The Biden administration has also promised to crack down on price gouging to discourage hoarding and reselling at higher prices. While that's all well and good, but the Biden administration was initially criticized for its tone-deaf response to the crisis. In "The Jimmy Dore Show" episode featured above, Dore replays Jen Psaki's response to a reporter who asks where parents should turn if they cannot find formula for their babies. Psaki suggested they call their pediatrician. And then what? What is the pediatrician supposed to do about it? Manufacture baby food? Do they have some sort of magic wand? Dore also points out she's apparently unaware that millions of parents are uninsured or underinsured, and can't afford to pay for pediatric visits to ask about how to feed their babies. Three Key Problems Three key factors have contributed to the current disaster, and none is being properly addressed. First of all, the market has been allowed to be monopolized by so few companies that the takedown of a single plant has the ability to threaten the lives of millions of babies. Adding insult to injury, our corporate-captured government has implemented labeling regulations that effectively ban foreign imports of formula, even if they meet or exceed FDA nutritional requirements. Far more importantly than either of those, however, is the fact that science -- to say nothing of common sense -- has been ignored for decades and corporate greed has been allowed to dictate infant nutrition instead. Absolutely nothing can compare to breast milk, yet people have been brainwashed into thinking that manmade formula is better, and that breast feeding is somehow undignified and unnecessary. Formula offered greater freedom for busy moms, and the promotion of the obnoxious idea that breastfeeding in public is shameful fueled the transition, making more moms defer to the bottle rather than their breasts. For years, women could even be fined for "public indecency" if caught breastfeeding in public. Were breastfeeding the norm, the country wouldn't be in a panic over low inventory of infant formula. Many children would also enjoy better health overall. The sad reality is that most commercial infant formula is complete junk food. Most contain shocking amounts of sugar -- typically in the form of corn syrup, which is the worst of all -- and even far worse ingredients, including large amounts of dangerous linoleic acid from soy (the risks of which I detail in "Infant Soy Formula -- A Risky Public Experiment") and genetically modified ingredients (reviewed in this 2012 article). Infant formulas have also been found to contain hazardous contaminants, including glyphosate15 and perchlorate (rocket fuel). We're now also hearing about artificial breast milk, a brand-new industry heavily funded by Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg. A company called Biomilq is trying to create artificial breast milk from cultured human mammary cells. What could possibly go wrong with that? As of yet, however, artificial breast milk is not commercially available, so that's a concern for another day. All of that said, as it stands, the formula shortage is an absolute disaster, because while breastfeeding is the perfect option for most new mothers, it's certainly not an option for anyone who didn't breastfeed from the start, or who hasn't breastfed for a number of weeks or months. You can't just restart lactation at will. For that reason, telling mothers who already rely on formula to "just breastfeed" is ridiculous, because they can't. Breast Is Best If you are a new mother and still lactating, then giving breastfeeding a try would be your best bet at this point. Breastfeeding has several benefits over formula, including reducing your baby's risk of dying, improving your baby's microbiome, thereby lowering their risk of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease later in life. Exclusively breastfed babies also tend to have higher IQs than formula-fed babies. How To Make Homemade Formula If the opportunity to breastfeed has already passed, your next-best option is to make your own infant formula. The Weston A. Price Foundation has been a leader in this for years. In the video above, former Weston A. Price chapter leader Sarah Pope demonstrates how to make the formula created by Mary Enig, Ph.D., published in the book, "Nourishing Traditions." However, based on my research into linoleic acid (LA), iron and other components, I have revised Enig's original formula (which you can find on the Weston A. Price Foundation's website). In my view, it's really crucial to NOT include any kind of iron or seed oils with high LA content, for all the reasons detailed in "Iron Overload Destroys Mitochondria and Sabotages Health" and "How Linoleic Acid Wrecks Your Health." I don't have any children, but if I did and the child's mother could not breastfeed, I would never use commercial infant formula as the recipe below is decidedly superior to commercial formulas and will give your child a major head start in life and preserve their health. Dr. Mercola's Preferred Healthy Homemade Infant Formula • 2 cups organic, whole, cow milk, preferably raw unprocessed milk from grass fed cows. For sources of good-quality milk, see www.realmilk.com or contact a local chapter of the Weston A. Price Foundation. • If the only choice available to you is commercial milk, choose whole milk, preferably grass fed organic and non-homogenized (Kalona SuperNatural non-homogenized organic milk is one example), and culture it with a Piima yogurt culture, available on CulturesForHealth.com, to restore enzymes. • For sensitive bellies, raw goat's milk may be better, but since it's low in vitamin B12, be sure to add 2 teaspoons of frozen organic chicken liver (boiled), finely grated, to each batch, and begin egg-yolk feeding at 4 months of age. • 4 tablespoons pure lactose (a milk sugar), available on Amazon. • Infant probiotic • 2 or more tablespoons of good quality, organic cream (regular, not ultrapasteurized). Use more if using milk from Holstein cows. • 1 teaspoon of Carlson's liquid cod liver oil, available from CarsonLabs.com, Amazon and most health food stores. • 2 teaspoons organic, virgin coconut oil, available in most grocery and health food stores. The coconut oil provides medium-chain saturated fats also found in mother's milk. • 2 teaspoons Sari Foods non-fortified nutritional yeast flakes, available on Amazon. Nutritional yeast provides essential folic acid. • 4 teaspoons Great Lakes beef hydrolysate gelatin, available on GreatLakesWellness.com. Before adding the gelatin into the formula, you'll need to dissolve it in the recommended amount of water; heat gently until completely dissolved. • 2 1/4 cups pure filtered water. Do NOT use tap water if your local water supplies contain fluoride. Most filtration systems cannot filter out fluoride, so only use fluoride-containing tap water if you have a water filtration system that is certified to remove fluoride. • 1 teaspoon acerola powder, available on Amazon.29 Acerola is an excellent source of whole food vitamin C. • Optional: 1/4 cup homemade liquid whey (see recipe for whey, below). • Optional: Monkfruit sweetener. If your child has gotten used to the sweetness of corn syrup-sweetened infant formula and is refusing unsweetened formula, you can use a little liquid monkfruit as a sweetener, available on Amazon30 and in most grocery stores. However, AVOID any monkfruit brand that contains erythritol, which can cause gastrointestinal stress. Try to lower the amount used, over time, to discourage the development of a sweet tooth. This recipe will make 36 ounces. Place all ingredients in a clean glass or stainless steel container and mix well. To ensure your mixing bowl is properly sanitized, place it in boiling hot water for a few minutes. Remove with tongs and let fully cool before using. To serve the formula, pour 6 to 8 ounces into a sanitized glass baby bottle, attach the nipple and set it in a pot of simmering water. Heat until the formula is warm but not hot to the touch. Always check the temperature of the formula before feeding using either the back of your hand or your tongue. Never ever heat formula in a microwave oven. You'll need to make a batch every other day or so, but the formula can be frozen so you have a stash for emergencies. Homemade Whey Recipe To make homemade whey, start with plain unsweetened yogurt, raw milk or cultured milk. Rest a large strainer lined with a clean linen kitchen towel or several layers of cheese cloth over a bowl. If you're using yogurt, place 2 quarts in the towel-lined strainer. Cover with a large plate and leave at room temperature overnight. The whey will drip out into the bowl. Place the whey in sanitized glass jars and store in the refrigerator. If you are using raw or cultured milk, place 2 quarts of the milk in a glass container and leave at room temperature for two to four days until the milk separates into curds and whey. At that point, pour the mixture into the towel-lined strainer and cover with a plate. Leave at room temperature overnight to separate the whey from the curd. (The whey will drip out into the bowl.) Store in clean glass jars in the refrigerator. Dairy-Free Formula If your baby has a milk allergy, you can make a liver-based formula as follows. This recipe, again revised from the original Weston A. Price recipe to remove iron and seed oils, will make 36 ounces: Ingredients 3 3/4 cups homemade beef or chicken broth 2 ounces organic liver, cut into small pieces 5 tablespoons lactose Infant Probiotic 1/4 cup homemade liquid whey 2 tablespoons coconut oil 1 teaspoon cod liver oil 1 teaspoon acerola powder Procedure Gently simmer the liver in the broth until fully cooked through. Liquefy the liver using a handheld blender or food processor. Once cooled, stir in all the remaining ingredients. Store in a sanitized glass or stainless steel container. ..............
