Avatar 3’ Pushed a Year to 2025, Two ‘Star Wars’ Movies Head for 2026 and ‘Avengers’ Films Delayed
Avatar 3’ Pushed a Year to 2025, Two ‘Star Wars’ Movies Head for 2026 and ‘Avengers’ Films Delayed.
Disney made a slew of high-profile changes and additions to its theatrical release calendar, including adding a date for 'Moana,' moving up 'Deadpool 3' and pushing the fourth and fifth 'Avatar' films three years each.
Disney’s film empire has reimagined its theatrical release calendar in a major way.
The studio announced a slew of changes on Tuesday, led by the news that it is setting two Star Wars movies for 2026 and pushing back Avatar 3 by a year, from December 2024 to December 2025. Additionally, Avatar 4 will now hit theaters in December 2029, followed by Avatar 5 in December 2031 — meaning 4 and 5 will now open three years later than previously announced.
Other highlights: Ryan Reynolds fans will be happy to learn that his untitled Deadpool 3 will now open in theaters on May 3, 2024, instead of Nov. 8, 2024.
Also on the Marvel Studios front, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty has been pushed a year to May 1, 2026. The feature has embattled Jonathan Majors attached in the lead role. The actor is facing assault charges in New York court. The follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars, has also been pushed a year, to May 7, 2027.
Disney’s already announced live-action Moana has received a theatrical release date of June 27, 2025.
20th Century has added another installment in the Alien franchise, dated for Aug. 16, 2024. Filmmaker Fede Alvarez is behind the feature, which stars Cailee Spaeny. The studio has also added Rami Malek thriller The Amateur to Nov. 8, 2024.
Lucasfilm has not had a Star Wars feature in theaters since 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. At April’s Star Wars Celebration, it teased its theatrical future, including a feature to star Daisy Ridley, another from The Mandalorian’s Dave Filoni and an epic from James Mangold. On Tuesday, Lucasfilm moved a previously dated Star Wars movie from December 2025 to May 22, 2026. The Ridley feature is furthest along in development and is likely to open on that date. And curiously, Lucasfilm revealed in Tuesday’s announcement that it has added a new Star Wars feature for just five months later: Dec. 18, 2026. (Another Star Wars movie is staying on its current date of Dec. 17, 2027, thus wasn’t mentioned in the announcement).

Messi was detained by Chinese police!
Messi was detained by Chinese police!
In a surprising turn of events, Lionel Messi was detained by Chinese police at Beijing Airport prior to Argentina's highly anticipated match against Australia at the Workers Stadium on Thursday.
As Messi arrived in the country to lead his national team in this significant clash, he encountered a hurdle with the Chinese Border Police. Reports have emerged, indicating that there were issues concerning Messi's visa, as he unintentionally carried his Spanish passport instead of his Argentine passport, which lacked a valid Chinese visa.
After approximately 30 minutes of discussion, the matter was resolved, allowing Messi to proceed beyond the airport.
Messi holds fond memories of his time on Chinese soil, particularly when he was a member of the Argentine squad that secured the Olympic Gold Medal in 2008, triumphing over Nigeria in the final match at the renowned Bird's Nest Stadium. At the age of 21, Messi played a pivotal role by assisting Angel Di Maria's goal in that momentous clash, ultimately leading Argentina to victory. Throughout the competition, the seven-time Ballon d'Or recipient showcased his brilliance by scoring two goals.
Following the match against Australia, Messi and his teammates are set to face Indonesia at the Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex in Central Jakarta on Monday, June 19, which will mark the conclusion of the 2022-23 football season for him.

Cynthia Erivo Opens Up About Filming Pivotal ‘Wicked’ Scene: “My Heart Broke Open and Tears Fell
Cynthia Erivo Opens Up About Filming Pivotal ‘Wicked’ Scene: “My Heart Broke Open and Tears Fell”.
The Oscar nominee said shooting "I'm Not That Girl" really spoke to her.
Cynthia Erivo shared a sweet message about her experience filming Wicked and how one particular scene really spoke to her.
In an Instagram post, the Oscar nominee, who plays Elphaba in the movie adaptation of the award-winning musical, explained that they had just finished shooting “I’m Not That Girl.” The song is performed halfway through the first act in which Elphaba expresses her love for Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey).
“When we had come to the end of that moment, my heart broke open and tears fell. (Please know this happens OFTEN),” she wrote in a long caption. “I thought of us, the ones who often feel like they’re on the outside. The ones who don’t know that their differences, oddities, quirks are what make them beautiful and special. The ones who, for some reason, believe they can’t be loved and I felt proud to sing a song that might speak to those feelings.”
The actress continued, saying that she is grateful to take on a role that turns the idea of beauty on its head and to be working on the film with “some of the most beautiful souls” on the planet. She stars alongside Bailey, Ariana Grande as Glinda, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible and Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard in director Jon M. Chu’s big-screen adaptation.
“I desperately hope that when you finally see this film, you’ll see you, you’ll see me, you’ll see Jon and Ari and our hearts laid bare,” Erivo wrote. “You’ll see pain and joy and maybe just maybe you’ll see a little spark of light that says, you are who you are for a reason and you are deserving of happiness and even though sometimes it might be hard to find, it is there for the taking.”
Bowen Yang, Keala Settle, Marissa Bode and Ethan Slater round out the ensemble cast of Wicked, which will be split into two films. The first chapter hits theaters on Nov. 17, 2024, and the second one is set to be released Dec. 25, 2025.

The Fabelmans’ Breakout Chloe East in Talks for A24 Thriller from Scott Beck-Bryan Woods (Exclusive)
‘The Fabelmans’ Breakout Chloe East in Talks for A24 Thriller from Scott Beck, Bryan Woods (Exclusive)
Hugh Grant is also in talks for the project from the New York indie outfit.
Chloe East, one of the breakouts of Steven Spielberg’s latest feature The Fabelmans, is in talks for A24’s new thriller Heretic from A Quiet Place creatives Scott Beck and Bryan Woods.
Beck and Woods wrote and will direct the movie that follows two Mormon missionaries who attempt to convert a man that turns out to be far more dangerous than they could have anticipated. Hugh Grant is also in talks for the feature.
The A24 project is eying a July start date but, as with any films shooting this summer, production can be affected by the possible SAG-AFTRA strike. Earlier this week, members overwhelmingly voted to authorize a potential strike should a new contract not be reached by the June 30 deadline.
The New York-based indie studio has found success with the horror-thriller genre, including Ari Aster entries Hereditary and Midsommar and Ti West and Mia Goth’s X films, which includes the upcoming threequel Maxxine. In a competitive situation, A24 picked up the hot Sundance supernatural horror title Talk to Me earlier this year.
In the semi-autobiographical The Fabelmans, East played the high school girlfriend of the young stand-in for Spielberg, played by Gabriel LaBelle. Past credits include series Kevin (Probably) Saves the World and HBO Max teen drama Generation.
East is repped by WME, LINK Entertainment, Vault Entertainment, and Felker Toczek.

Trump investigations heat up as Meadows testifies-second grand jury hears from witnesses in Florida
Trump investigations heat up as Meadows testifies, second grand jury hears from witnesses in Florida.
As the Justice Department’s investigations into former President Donald Trump continue, two new factors have emerged.
Trump’s former Chief of Staff Mark Meadows has testified before a federal grand jury, and a second grand jury has heard from witnesses as part of the investigation into Trump’s handling of classified documents, according to multiple reports.
It was not immediately clear which investigation Meadows testified about or when he testified, according to the reports. One federal investigation into Trump and his allies is focused on efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 race for the White House. The other is focused on Trump’s handling of classified documents at his Florida estate, Mar-a-Lago.
Trump has denied all wrongdoing.
Politics:DOJ inquiry into Donald Trump's classified documents may close soon, as his lawyers meet Monday
Washington:Justice Department won't pursue charges against Mike Pence over classified documents
A lawyer for Meadows, George Terwilliger, told The New York Times in a statement that “Without commenting on whether or not Mr. Meadows has testified before the grand jury or in any other proceeding, Mr. Meadows has maintained a commitment to tell the truth where he has a legal obligation to do so.”

China Box Office: ‘Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse’ Opens to So-So $17.2M
China Box Office: ‘Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse’ Opens to So-So $17.2M
The film has received rave reviews in China, but it appears to be playing more like a fan film than a blockbuster there.
Sony’s critically acclaimed Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse opened to $17.2 million in China over the weekend — a respectable start but a fraction of its barnstorming $120.5 million opening in North America.
As in the U.S., the film has been very well received by Chinese critics and filmgoers alike. It currently scores 9.4 on ticketing apps Maoyan and Tao Piao Piao, and 8.8 on fan site Douban — which is significantly better than any other Hollywood film currently on release in the country. But Maoyan only projects it to earn about $35 million in total in the country, a major step down from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse‘s $62.8 million haul in 2019.
Analysts have been wrestling with the question of how much of the Hollywood studio’s recent theatrical earnings shortfalls in China should be blamed on weak product versus changes to market demand. But the slipping performance between the two Spiderverse films — both undeniably strong movies — seems to suggest that the Chinese audience’s appetite for U.S. content has indeed waned.
In North America, the sequel opened to $120.5 million, compared to $35.6 million for the first film in 2018.
In second place, Universal Pictures’ Fast X earned $7.6 million. After three weekends, the film has brought in $124.1 million, the most of any non-Chinese title this year.
Japan’s Studio Ghibli scored third place with a re-release of its 1986 anime classic Castle in the Sky. The film earned $6 million from Friday to Sunday and has totaled $10.7 million since its launch on June 1.
Fellow anime staple, Doraemon: Nobita’s Sky Utopia, was just a step behind with $4.2 million for the weekend and $10.9 million as of its June 1 opening.
Paramount’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will launch in China on Friday, followed by Warner Bros.’ The Flash on June 16.

‘Barbie’ Production Prompted International Shortage of Pink Paint for Greta Gerwig’s Film,
‘Barbie’ Production Prompted International Shortage of Pink Paint for Greta Gerwig’s Film,
The director said she wanted "to capture what was so ridiculously fun about the Dreamhouses" in the movie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie production used so much pink paint to bring the fantasy world to life that it actually led to a shortage of the color.
In a recent interview with Architectural Digest, published online Tuesday, the director opened up about how Barbie Land took form and who helped pull off the iconic pink set design in the highly-anticipated movie.
“Maintaining the ‘kid-ness’ was paramount,” she said of the film, starring Margot Robbie as Mattel’s iconic fashion doll and Ryan Gosling as Ken. “I wanted the pinks to be very bright, and everything to be almost too much.”
Gerwig also noted that it was important to not “forget what made me love Barbie when I was a little girl.” So that’s when she decided to put production designer Sarah Greenwood and set decorator Katie Spencer up for the challenge.
Greenwood told the magazine that to help “make Barbie real through this unreal world,” they took inspiration from Palm Springs’ midcentury modernism.
The production designer previously told IndieWire that “pink became the film’s thesis,” and that when it came to finding the perfect pink, “it was epic dealing with the painters, mixing the right colors.”
But due to construction, Greenwood told AD that there ended up being an international shortage of the fluorescent shade of Rosco paint. She added, “The world … ran out of pink.”
Overall, Gerwig said her goal was “to capture what was so ridiculously fun about the Dreamhouses” in the film, which is set to hit theaters on July 21.

Donald Trump fought to save Texas ally Ken Paxton from impeachment. It didn't work.
Donald Trump fought to save Texas ally Ken Paxton from impeachment. It didn't work.
Trump had repeatedly warned Republicans against backing the impeachment of Paxton, arguing it was a 'very unfair process."
WASHINGTON – In the hours before the GOP-controlled legislature in Texas voted to impeach fellow Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, former President Donald Trump repeatedly took to social media with a warning for anyone − and especially members of his own party − who opposed his longtime ally.
Trump lamented what he called the “very unfair process” used last weekend to oust one of the nation's most active state legal officials and vowed that he would "fight" any lawmakers who supported the impeachment.
In the end, a majority of Texas Republicans in the state's House of Representatives ignored the admonishments of a former president and party leader and voted overwhelmingly to impeach Paxton anyway. Of 85 Republicans in the chamber, 60 supported Paxton's impeachment.

Vote:Here's how Texas lawmakers voted to impeach Attorney General Ken Paxton
The decision by many Republicans to wave off Trump's warnings fueled questions about the former president’s political power in one of the nation's reddest states. The episode comes as the field of candidates entering the race to challenge Trump for the 2024 Republican nomination grows.
A spokeswoman for Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Trump vows to ‘fight’ for ally Paxton. Will it matter?
Paxton has been a nationally prominent conservative legal voice for years as well as an ally to Trump. In addition to filing high-profile suits against President Joe Biden over immigration and other issues, it was Paxton who brought an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court challenging the 2020 election results in Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. The nation's highest court ultimately denied that request in late 2020.
Leading up to Saturday's impeachment, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to slam GOP lawmakers in Texas, encouraging them to let the voters decide Paxton's fate, instead. “Hopefully Republicans in the Texas House will agree that this is a very unfair process that should not be allowed to happen or proceed,” he wrote. “I will fight you if it does.”
The former president and other national conservative figures doubled down after the vote as focus in Texas shifted toward a Senate trial. Trump accused Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a fellow of Republican, of being “MISSING IN ACTION!” during the impeachment fight.

Arnold Schwarzenegger on Bruce Willis’ Retirement: Action Stars “Never Really Retire … They Reload”
Arnold Schwarzenegger on Bruce Willis’ Retirement: Action Stars “Never Really Retire … They Reload”
Hhe will always be remembered as a great, great star. And a kind man," the actor says of his 'Expendables' co-star.
Arnold Schwarzenegger has high praise for Bruce Willis following the actor’s announcement that he is retiring from acting due to a brain disorder called aphasia.
The actor’s family announced the news last year following his diagnosis, which has since been updated more specifically to frontotemporal dementia.
Recently, he was asked about Willis’ retirement and had nothing but kind words to say about the actor.
“I think that he’s fantastic,” Schwarzenegger told CinemaBlend of Willis. “He was, always for years and years, is a huge, huge star. And I think that he will always be remembered as a great, great star. And a kind man.”
And, speaking as one action star about another, Schwarzenegger added: “I understand that under his circumstances, health-wise, that he had to retire. But in general, you know, we never really retire. Action heroes, they reload.”
Schwarzenegger and Willis were partners early on in the restaurant franchise Planet Hollywood and also worked together on The Expendables franchise.
Willis celebrated his 68th birthday in March surrounded by his family, including ex-wife Demi Moore, current wife Emma Heming Willis and his daughters.
Schwarzenegger, meanwhile, stars in Netflix’s new action-comedy FUBAR as well as Arnold, a docu-series also on Netflix, that chronicles his life. He also has an upcoming self-help book, Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life, and as well as a self-published daily motivational newsletter.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas refunded all production costs due to director's "inhumane" treatment
Priyanka Chopra Jonas Says She Paid a Movie Production Back After Backing Out Over a “Dehumanizing” Director
"I just couldn’t look at him every day," she said of her decision to quit the unnamed movie after just two days of filming.
Priyanka Chopra Jonas paid back a production what it spent on her after she backed out just two days into filming due to the “dehumanizing” way she was treated by a director.
The Citadel star spoke about why she made the decision to pay out of her own pocket after the experience in a recent story for The Zoe Report. The interview saw the Love Again star talking about her marriage to Nick Jonas and their shared work ethic, the challenges of breaking into the American entertainment industry and her production company’s two not-yet-announced projects for Amazon that had started their writers rooms but are now on pause amid the strike.
At one point in the discussion, Chopra Jonas broaches an experience she’d previously written about in her memoir Unfinished. It involved a director on one of her earliest Bollywood projects around 2002 or 2003, and a role in which the new-to-the-industry talent played a woman undercover.
“I’m undercover, I’m seducing the guy — obviously that’s what girls do when they’re undercover. But I’m seducing the guy, and you have to take off one piece of clothing [at a time],” she recalled. “I wanted to layer up. The filmmaker was like, ‘No, I need to see her underwear. Otherwise, why is anybody coming to watch this movie?‘”
Chopra Jonas clarifies that the director didn’t make the comment directly to her but in front of her to her stylist, who the director had said to call on the phone for a recommendation. At the time, she had posed a question to the director about whether she should start the scene in more layers so she’s she wouldn’t end up bare skinned too quickly, according to her memoir.
Still, it “was such a dehumanizing moment. It was a feeling of, I’m nothing else outside of how I can be used, my art is not important, what I contribute is not important,” she said.
That prompted her to quit the project after just two days of work, but now the actress says she paid the production back out of her own pocket for what they’d spent on her, “at her father’s urging,” according to The Zoe Report. “I just couldn’t look at him every day,” she said of her decision.
In the 2021 memoir, according to the Hindustan Times, the actress alleged that he made the unnamed director livid, and he “agitated” to the sets of another film she was on, with a co-star having to interven on her behalf.
“I was ready to go full-out as a temptress in the number,” she said of her time on that initial film. “The director’s words and tone, though, conveyed that he regarded me in a way that I found unacceptable.”
