Biden, McCarthy have 'productive' debt ceiling meeting, but still lack deal as default looms
Biden, McCarthy have 'productive' debt ceiling meeting, but still lack deal as default looms,
WASHINGTON - President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy appeared to make progress but did not reach an agreement during a pivotal White House meeting Monday evening on raising the debt ceiling 10 days before a potential default.
“I felt we had a productive discussion," McCarthy told reporters following the roughly one-hour meeting. "We don’t have an agreement yet.”
The high-stakes Oval Office meeting, which lasted about an hour, came after negotiations took a step backwards over the weekend amid long-standing disagreements on spending cuts sought by Republicans.
McCarthy commended the "professionalism" and "honesty" in the meeting but it wasn't immediately clear which areas produced headway. McCarthy said he's unwilling to consider tax increases on the wealthy, which Biden supports, or defense cuts pushed by some liberal Democrats.
The problem is not revenue. The problem is spending," McCarthy said.
Biden 'optimistic' as McCarthy applauds 'better' tone
Biden is racing to reach a budget deal with House Republicans so they will take action to raise the debt ceiling before June 1, when the Treasury projects the U.S. could run out of money and default. But Republicans want spending cuts that Biden slammed Sunday as "unacceptable" for a deal.
Biden, in a statement after the meeting, also described a "productive" discussion. "We reiterated once again that default is off the table and the only way to move forward is in good faith toward a bipartisan agreement," he said.
Kicking off the meeting, Biden told reporters he was "optimistic" about making progress. "We still have some disagreements but I think we may be able to get where we have to go," he said. "We both know we have a significant responsibility."
It was the third time Biden and McCarthy have met in less two weeks but their first one-on-one gathering in more than 100 days when they kicked off debt ceiling talks in February. Other recent meetings included other congressional leaders from both parties.
"I think the tone tonight was better than any other time we've had discussions," McCarthy said. "I believe we can get it done."

Killers of the Flower Moon movie review | Murders Story
"Killers of the Flower Moon" is a highly anticipated film directed by Martin Scorsese, based on the book of the same name by David Grann. The movie depicts the true story of the Osage Indian murders in the 1920s, where members of the Osage Nation were killed for their oil wealth.
With an impressive cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Jesse Plemons, the performances are stellar. DiCaprio delivers a compelling portrayal as an FBI agent investigating the murders, while De Niro showcases his talent in a supporting role. Plemons also shines in his role as a local lawman caught in the middle.
Scorsese's direction is masterful, as expected. The film boasts stunning cinematography and meticulous attention to detail in recreating the era. The pacing is steady, allowing the tension to build gradually, and the screenplay effectively balances the historical context with the personal stories of the characters.
One of the film's strengths is its exploration of the complex themes of greed, corruption, and the exploitation of indigenous communities. It sheds light on a dark chapter in American history and raises important questions about justice and the treatment of Native Americans.
However, some viewers might find the film's runtime of over two hours to be a bit long, and the slow-burning narrative may not be everyone's cup of tea. Additionally, the film's heavy subject matter and graphic violence may be unsettling for some audiences.
Overall, "Killers of the Flower Moon" is a powerful and thought-provoking film that showcases the talents of its cast and director. It's a compelling and haunting examination of a true story that deserves to be told.

Martin Scorsese at the CannesFilm Festival His latest filmThe Killers of the Flower Moon got support
Cannes:Osage Tribal Leader Says Martin Scorsese,
Leonardo DiCaprio Have “Restored Trust”
With ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’
In a wide-ranging and occasionally emotional press conference, the film's cast and director reflected on everything from their cinematic legacy to the "banality of evil" hiding in plain sight in America in the personage of Donald Trump.
Martin Scorsese got perhaps the most glowing endorsement of his latest film The Killers of the Flower Moon at the Cannes Film Festival.
The Apple TV+ feature, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Lily Gladstone, explores a series of murders of members of the oil-rich Indigenous Osage Nation in the 1920s, unravelling the betrayal the community faced by white outsiders and the FBI investigation that eventually brought the killers to light.
Speaking at the press conference for the film festival on Sunday, Chief Standing Bear — leader of the Osage Nation — said that his people still “suffer” to this day.
“But I can say on behalf of the Osage Nation that Scorsese and his team have restored trust,” he said.
The previous evening, the Apple TV+ film bowed to an enthusiastic reception in the Palais, the audience rising for a standing ovation lasting 9 minutes, among the lengthiest of the festival so far.
Scorsese spoke of how deeply his meetings with Osage tribal leaders impacted his creative process.
“I knew when I heard what their values are about love, respect, and loving the earth — and I’m not talking about making this into a political issue; I’m talking about really how to live on this planet — it reoriented me every time I heard it,” Scorsese said.
“I wanted to know everything I could about the Osage,” he explained. “It’s overwhelming… The more I found out, the more I wanted to put in.”
Standing Bear added that there were young Osage working behind the cameras on the film across various departments, and also expressed his admiration regarding the work ethic of the top cast.
The specter of Donald Trump also made an unlikely appearance at the press conference. The former president and potential 2024 election candidate was referenced by Robert De Niro, who drew parallels between the political figure and the character he plays in Killers, a man who pretends to be an ally of the oil-rich Osage Nation in the 1920s only to betray them and oversee a series of brutal murders in his quest for wealth. “We see it today and you know who I’m talking about but I’m not going to say his name, De Niro said. “That guy is stupid.”
“It’s there and we have to keep a very close eye on it,” De Niro added, referring to the evil lurking in everyday white supremacy.
He went on: “There are people who think Trump can do a good job. Imagine how insane that is.”
Reflecting on happier thoughts, De Niro noted that the last time he was at the festival with Scorsese was with Taxi Driver in 1976. Taxi Driver, of course, would win the Palme.

New Titanic video released | 111 years later New Titanic video released
A New 3-D Scan of the Titanic Showsthe Cruise Liner in a Whole New Light
More than a century after it sunk on its maiden voyage, the Titanic still captivates people to this day.
Now we’re getting a look at the wreckage like we’ve never seen before. Deep sea mapping company Magellan Ltd. has created a full-scale 3-D scan of the doomed vessel that provides unprecedented 360-views. Magellan’s ambitious imaging project produced six terabytes of data, more than 700,000 images from every angle, and a video with high-resolution, according to The New York Times.
A team of researchers used a pair of remote-controlled submersibles—named Romeo and Juliet—to map the ship and a three-mile debris field located 12,500 feet below the surface. The scans were created during a six-week voyage in the summer of 2022, according to Atlantic Productions, which is behind a forthcoming documentary about the project. The ship was in no way touched or disturbed during the process, and a flower laying ceremony was also held to the victims of the wreck—an estimated 1,500 passengers.
Although the Titanic’s wreckage has been photographed before, previous images didn’t have the best lighting and were further hampered by murky water. The new images don’t have such impediments, allowing us to see the ship in “extraordinary detail,” Atlantic Productions told The Times. Even personal effects can be seen such as watches, hats and Champagne bottles.
Many elements of the actual structure are also visible in the images. However, microbes continue to disintegrate the cruise liner, meaning researchers are on a time crunch to learn whatever they can from the ship, according to BBC News. The hope is that the mapping project can aid in that process.
“There are still questions, basic questions, that need to be answered about the ship,” Parks Stephenson, a Titanic analyst and historian, told BBC. He said the model was “one of the first major steps to driving the Titanic story towards evidence-based research—and not speculation.”

The Little Mermaid News days
‘Little Mermaid’ Composer Alan Menken Explains Why One Original Film Song Isn’t in the Live-Action Remake
Disney's adaptation of the 1989 animated version includes three new songs from Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
The Little Mermaid composer Alan Menken is offering an explanation for why one song from the original 1989 animated classic is not part of the new live-action film’s world.
During an interview with Comicbook.com that published Saturday, the Oscar-winning songwriter said that the team behind Disney’s forthcoming feature that hits theaters May 26 opted against including the song “Daughters of Triton.” In the 1989 film, the number is performed by Ariel’s sisters toward the beginning of the story and features King Triton realizing that his youngest daughter is not with the rest of the family as planned.
According to Menken, it was a bigger priority to create more of a buildup to Ariel’s performance of “Part of Your World,” which is widely regarded as one of the initial film’s signature songs. “I think the thought process was a) we didn’t it need in this particular version,” Menken said about “Daughters of Triton” getting nixed. “And we definitely wanted the film to start with a much more of a live-action feel of the ocean and meeting Ariel, and then we wait a little bit, make you wait until we get to ‘Part of Your World.'”
He continued, “And I think that was, you know, it was an amazing choice because it just builds the power and anticipation. And part of that is also knowing you’re adapting something that’s already beloved. So you want to say, ‘Wait for it, wait for it, wait for it — and here it is.’ And when it comes, God.”
Another tune from the original film that is not included on the track list for the new version’s soundtrack — which is available for pre-sale on Spotify — is “Les Poissons,” performed in the animated movie by the character Chef Louie as Sebastian finds himself trapped in the kitchen. The 2023 film’s soundtrack also includes three new songs composed by Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Jacob Tremblay, who voices Flounder in the live-action The Little Mermaid, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s recent premiere about another change from the original, namely the look of his character. “I thought it was really cool because I like how they’re doing it to make them look like real animals,” the performer said about Flounder’s new look, which had been the subject of some criticism on social media. “I think people should see the movie, and then they can judge.”
The cast of the new Little Mermaid includes Halle Bailey, Jonah Hauer-King, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Noma Dumezweni, Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy. Disney releases the Rob Marshall-directed film May 26.

Donald Trump Mocks E. Jean Carroll During CNN Town Hall
New Hampshire voters react after Trump's town hall
Former President Donald Trump's return to New Hampshire to participate in a CNN town hall created buzz for staunch supporters relishing in his dominance of the polls.
"I thought last night was a tremendous clear messaging from President Trump," said Republican real estate investor Steve Richard. "I think that audience reflected that over and over again."
Trump took questions from Republican and independent Granite State voters and repeated fraudulent claims that the 2020 election was stolen and said he would have the Russian war in Ukraine "settled within one day."
New Hampshire voters will be the first in the nation to cast primary ballots for a Republican presidential nominee early next year, yet some Trump voters appear not to be swayed by several legal issues facing the former president.
Earlier this week, Trump was found liable for sexual abuse and defamation against writer E. Jean Carroll. She was awarded $5 million in damages after a jury sided with her unanimously, but Trump called Carroll's story "fake" and "made up" on Wednesday night.
June Dickerson, an independent who voted for Trump, says she believes him.
"He's a very honorable man," she said. "He always said what was on his mind. He was always honest and forthright and I don't believe lies."
Louise Hoyt, a Republican voter, said she plans to vote for Trump again.
"They are trying to stop him, that's what they are trying to do," she said.
However, Trump's attacks on Carroll did not sit well with independent voter Melanie Mortan.
"I think it's amazing that he got that conviction and yet still continues to shame and put her down. It's like he feels like he is above the law. It's despicable," Morton said.
The former president remains the clear front-runner in the 2024 Republican presidential primary, but for Kristin Burke, an independent who voted for Trump previously, she said it would be a struggle to vote for him again.
"I just think there was too much havoc while he was in the presidency and it was just too much for the country," Burke said.
The former president scored over 50 endorsements in the Granite State, but one top Republican is skeptical of Trump's broad support. Jason Osborne, the New Hampshire House Majority Leader who recently endorsed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in the 2024 election,
see increasing fatigue in the support for Trump.
"I think it's a slow bleed. It's not it's not going to be all at once. And this one town hall isn't going to make a big difference," he said. "But over the course of the next several months, as we move through this campaign, as Gov. Ron DeSantis gets into the race and starts picking up support, you're going to start to see more and more of that support dwindle by the time we get to the primary."

Jennifer Lopez Wishes She Had Gotten More “Empowering” Action Roles When She Was a “Little B
The actress-singer-dancer also talked about husband Ben Affleck as a dad, saying, "It brings tears to my eyes"
Jennifer Lopez is opening up about her latest role and how excited she was to be starring in an action-thriller.
During Thursday’s episode of The View, the Shotgun Wedding actress-producer said that while filming her upcoming movie The Mother “was a lot of fun,” it was also “a lot of work.”
In the Niki Caro-directed film, Lopez stars as an assassin who is fleeing from dangerous assailants. But she comes out of hiding to protect her daughter she gave up earlier in her life.
For the role, she had to undergo regular fight training, but she explained that it was “choreographed. We have to be efficient. I can’t be fighting eight hours a day. After like an hour, I’m like, OK. So they had to be real efficient and they choreographed it almost like a dance, which is good for me since I’m a dancer.”
The Shades of Blue actress-executive producer also reflected on her career, saying she’s excited to be able to do action roles now, like her one in The Mother. But she then jokes that she wishes she would have gotten “these types of roles that I’m getting now, funnily enough, when I was a little bit more, you know, spry. But a little bit, you know, younger.”
Overall, she said these types of roles are “kind of empowering, and it makes me feel strong and good. And it was great.”
Later during the conversation, the Hustlers actress-producer got emotional while talking about her husband Ben Affleck and watching him as a father, saying, “It brings tears to my eyes.”
Lopez shares teen twines with ex-husband Marc Anthony and Affleck shares three children with ex-wife Jennifer Garner.
“He is honestly the best dad I’ve ever seen,” she said. He’s so involved. He teaches me about how to kind of interact with the kids sometimes. He’s just so in tune. He’s such a brilliant guy anyway, like he’s so learned in so many things, and you could just tell when he had his kids, he must have read every book and everything that you could possibly learn about children, and he applies it. He’s present, and that’s all you can ask for is a present, loving dad who cares and shows up every single day, and that’s who he is.”

Amazon Reveals Streaming Release Date for Ben Affleck’s ‘Air’-Ben Affleck, Matt Damon
The acclaimed sports drama, starring Matt Damon and Viola Davis, marks Amazon Studio's renewed foray into theatrical.
Ben Affleck’s critically acclaimed Air will become available to stream on Amazon Prime Video on May 12 after an exclusive run in theaters across the world.
The star-packed period sports drama, which has sparked early Oscar buzz, marks a new era for Amazon Studios in terms of how it releases certain original titles. Instead of sending Air straight to streaming, the studio has agreed to abide by a traditional theatrical window to give the movie a robust run in thousands of theaters.
Air will have played exclusively on the big screen for 39 days when it premieres on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
Written by Alex Convery, Air‘s cast is led by Matt Damon, Viola Davis Jason Bateman, Chris Messina, Matthew Maher, Marlon Wayans, Chris Tucker and Gustaf Skarsgård as Horst Dassler. (Affleck also stars.)
Damon portrays former Nike executive Sonny Vaccaro, while Affleck plays Nike co-founder Phil Knight in a story involving Nike’s long-shot effort to sign rising superstar basketball player Michael Jordan to a shoe contract in the mid-’80s, an endorsement that seemed impossible at the time but, thanks to the maverick sneaker salesman, would become the most significant relationship between an athletic brand and an athlete ever, launching the global, multibillion-dollar contemporary sneaker industry. Davis plays Deloris Jordan.
Air‘s global box office gross to date is $70.2 million, including $47.6 million domestically and $31.6 million overseas. The film cost $90 million to produce before marketing (that does not account for the additional tens of millions Amazon paid to take the project off the table).
The film is backed by Amazon Studios, Skydance Sports and Mandalay Pictures. It’s also the first project from Affleck and Matt Damon’s Artists Equity, in addition to marking the first time Affleck directed a feature starring his longtime pal Damon.
Amazon handled Air‘s release in North America, while Warner Bros. International has overseas duties per its distribution pact with MGM.

Hollywood Flashback: In 1987, ‘Fatal Attraction’ Would Not Be Ignored
Three-plus decades before Paramount+’s spinoff series, the erotic thriller starring Glenn Close and Michael Douglas topped box office charts.
Fatal Attraction — which wheezes back to life as a series starring Joshua Jackson and Lizzy Caplan, premiering April 30 on Paramount+ — began as the 1979 short Diversion, about a one-night stand gone haywire, which writer-director James Dearden fleshed out into a feature screenplay.
With contributions from Nicholas Meyer (writer-director of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan), Paramount producers Stanley R. Jaffe and Sherry Lansing were convinced they had a viable erotic thriller on their hands. The script tells the story of Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas), a married New York lawyer who has what he thinks is no-strings sex with Alex Forrest (Glenn Close), a publishing executive, while his wife, Beth (Anne Archer), and daughter are out of town. How wrong he is. Alex quickly becomes dangerously obsessed with Dan and the wife who stands in her way. The rest — from Alex’s “I’m not going to be ignored, Dan” to a boiled pet bunny — is cinematic history.
“It was a very good script,” director Adrian Lyne said back in 1987, a week before the film’s release. “I was dying to know what else would this woman do, and when would the wife find out?” There were no intimacy coordinators around when they shot the steamy scene that sets the plot in motion.
“I didn’t want to do their sex scene in bed because it’s so dreary,” Lyne said. “And I thought about the sink, because I remembered I had once had sex with a girl over a sink, way back. The plates clank around and you’ll have a laugh. You always need a laugh in a sex scene.”
After retooling the original ending — instead of Alex slitting her own throat, she’s shot dead by Beth as she emerges from a bathtub wielding a knife with Dan’s name on it — the film released to a monumental response, spending eight weeks at No. 1 and becoming the second-highest-grossing film of 1987 (behind Three Men and a Baby), earning $157 million domestically ($426 million today). It was also nominated for six Oscars and impressed THR‘s critic, who called it a “lean, riveting horror-of-personality movie.”

Mila Kunis is shutting down rumors that she will be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
When host James Corden asked her during Wednesday’s episode of The Late Late Show if she’s going to be playing Susan Storm in the upcoming Fantastic Four film, the That ’70s Show actress responded, “Apparently, if you go to lunch with somebody that is also in the industry, you then start working together, according to the internet.
After going to a deli with director Matt Shakman one day, she explained, “the next day I was somehow in Fantastic Four.”
Although the Luckiest Girl Alive star isn’t going to be in the reboot, she did note that she does “know who is.” But Kunis didn’t share any more details, because “I don’t want to get in trouble with The Mouse [Disney executives], so none of you will find out.”
The new Fantastic Four movie, which has a release date of Feb. 14, 2025, is set to kick off Phase 6 of its storytelling universe. Last month, The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reported that Josh Friedman, who worked on Avatar: The Way of Water, was tapped as a new writer for the Shakman-directed film. Before Friedman’s hire, Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer were the previous writers on the project.
The Fantastic Four heroic team played a huge part in introducing the world to the MCU in the 1960s. Although most details surrounding the film have been kept under wraps, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige told THR at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2022 that the film will not be an origin story. He said, “A lot of people know this origin story. A lot of people know the basics. How do we take that and bring something that they’ve never seen before?”

Box Office Milestone Super Mario Bros Movie Crossing $1B Globally
Box Office Milestone: ‘Super Mario Bros. Movie’ Crossing $1B Globally
Universal and Illumination's video game adaptation is playing more like an all-audience tentpole than an animated family film.
Illumination and Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie is checking off another notable milestone.
The Nintendo video game adaptation will cross $1 billion at the worldwide box office sometime on Sunday, its 26th day in release. It becomes only the 10th animated film to achieve the feat, and is easily the first title of 2023 to do so.
In North America, Super Mario’s projected weekend gross is $37.5 million from 4,204 theaters for a domestic tally of $487.5 million through Sunday. Its projected weekend overseas haul is $69 million for a foreign cume of $533 million and $1.02 billion globally.
The movie has shattered any number of records, including ranking as the highest-grossing animated film in Universal history at the domestic box office after besting Minions: The Rise of Gru ($369.7 million) and the third-highest of any Universal movie behind Jurassic World and E.T. The Extraterrestrial, not adjusted for inflation.
Super Mario continues to play more like an all-audience blockbuster than an animated tentpole thanks to its multi-generational appeal.
Elsewhere at the domestic box office, Warner Bros.’ Evil Dead Rise is impressing in its sophomore outing of $13.5 million from 3,417 locations for a domestic tally of $45 million or more.
Lionsgate’s new offering Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret looks to come in No. 3 with around $6 million from 3,334 cinemas. The film earned an A CinemaScore.
In a fun twist, the rerelease of Star Wars: Episode VI — Return of the Jedi will place No. 4 with an estimated $5.6 million from only 500 theaters.
John Wick: Chapter 4, another Lionsgate movie, is expected to round out the top five with roughly $4.5 million from 2,481 sites, enough to jump the $175 million mark domestically.
Sony’s Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of The Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of The World is proving to be a disappointment. The movie will fall outside the top 10 with a projected opening of $2.6 million or thereabouts from 3,504 theaters.
Numbers will be updated Sunday morning.

Damon Lindelof Says He Was “Asked to Leave” His ‘Star Wars’ Project
The 'Lost' creator was previously writing the script with Justin Britt-Gibson before Steven Knight stepped in to work on the Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy-directed film.
Damon Lindelof is opening up about why he recently parted ways with the Star Wars franchise.
During an interview with Esquire, published online Friday, the Lost creator claimed, “I was in more than talks to join the Star Wars universe. I joined the Star Wars universe and was asked to leave.”
In March, it was reported that Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight would be stepping in to work on the script for the project from Oscar-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy following Lindelof and up-and-coming writer Justin Britt-Gibson’s departure.

Peter Pan & Wendy’ Review
‘Peter Pan & Wendy’ Review: Jude Law and Yara Shahidi Star in David Lowery’s Empathetic Portrayal of Neverland
The 'Green Knight' and 'A Ghost Story' director helms the latest version of Disney's classic about the boy who refuses to grow up.
Peter Pan & Wendy, David Lowery’s humanizing interpretation of J.M. Barrie’s existential classic about the boy who refuses to grow up, speaks more to the inner child of jaded adults than it does to actual kids. This version of the fairytale grounds the fundamental wistfulness of the original tale with empathetic backstories and takes care to remedy the original’s overt racism and latent sexism.
Despite criticisms lodged at Lowery (The Green Knight) in the months leading up to this film’s release on Disney+, Peter Pan & Wendy keeps much intact. Lowery and his co-writer Toby Halbrooks have a firm grasp on the enduring qualities of Barrie’s story, which, as they correctly suggest throughout the film, has nothing to do with whether or not the gang of Lost Boys includes girls. Their rendition teases out the conflicts between Peter and Wendy, diversifies the mythic leader’s ragtag group and develops the indigenous people of Neverland into more realized characters. The duo, who collaborated on Lowery’s previous films, have created a fairytale of the present and for the future.
