Former Police Officer Matt Novak shares what his favorite part of working as a #police officer. He worked for more than 15 years in the profession and now offers encouragement to those still on. Matt has a servant's heart and a lot of police officers do. Make sure if you are currently working in #lawenforcement to show up with respect, empathy, and compassion. Not saying being a pushover and dropping your guard, but it's too easy to become negative and asocial when you're exposed to the worst of the worst incidents that can happen to people. Take care!

#lawenforcement is a stressful job. Tragically more police officers are dying by suicide than in the line duty. #stressmanagement is absolutely crucial for police officers. There are some common ways a lot of police officers cope with stress, trauma, and demands, but there are still missing pieces. Active awareness and growth mindset. If you’re in law enforcement, take care of yourself daily!!!!

I noticed a question online about #police officers having beards. Clearly within the last few years we have seen more and more police officers with beards so it's being allowed...IF...the department policy allows it. Yeah, thank you Captain Obvious Scott. Well, the thing is, there is fine print. I'll go over some of what was written in the department policy where I worked for several years.

Legal areas of the job of working as a #police officer are not as action packed as other areas of the job. As Zach Miller (a highly respected police legal instructor) says, the legal side is not as "sexy". BUT IT'S NOT OPTIONAL!! Does being a police officer change you? The good and the bad. Yes, being a police officer changes you, but doesn't have to be in a bad way. Actively cope each and every day to not let your mental, physical, spiritual, and social health take an abrupt and bad turn. I'm speaking from experience on this. I settled with thinking that if I had friends outside of the job, worked out, and stay strong to my faith, that I was immune. Little did I know I had a fixed mindset and there were challenges.

In March of 2005, Kevin Berthia's daughter had just been born, medical expenses were climbing, and for 22 years prior, he never talked about his pain. He was too overwhelmed and wanted to end the pain. He decided to jump off the Golden Gate bridge. On an evolutionary basis, our brains seek to protect us. The brain doesn’t crave for any police officer or any person to be involved in a traumatic event. That is why it is ever so crucial to actively cope with stress, demands of the job, and trauma exposure. I wish I would have been told this when I went through the rookie school prior to being sworn in and assigned as a patrol officer. You cannot escape your human brain, law enforcement or not. But for police officers you have to admit your human and not invincible when it comes to mental well-being. #police #mentalwellness

What happened in Memphis, when those 5 police officers murdered Tyre Nichols was not policing. They lost their ability to function as decent human beings. I just read that per the International Association of Chiefs of Police, 50% of police agencies have lowered their job qualifications in the storm of a recruiting crisis. That is bad for the public and bad for the police because lower standards increase the chance of an unqualified person, working as a police officer and that is concerning!! #lawenforcement #policereform
