Causes of Insulin Resistance
Insulin plays many roles in the body, not just managing blood sugar levels (although that is a big role!). In this video, I am walking through the causes of elevated insulin and insulin resistance.
Insulin resistance is a core contributor to many chronic diseases - not just Diabetes! Research has shown connections with Alzheimer's, heart disease, autoimmune conditions, cancer, hypertension, and many more.

When You Should Not Take Prebiotics and Probiotics
For years we've been told to eat more fiber and prebiotic-containing foods. Lately we've also been told to load up on probiotics for a healthy gut. But sometimes (often actually) this advice will make your symptoms worse!
In this video we're talking about IBS, IBD, SIBO, celiac disease, autoimmune thyroiditis, insulin resistance, weight loss resistance, depression and mood disorders. Sound like a broad list? It is, but newer research is showing a lot of similarities - and it's all about the microbiome!

Nutrigenomix - Genetic Testing for Personalized Nutrition
I know a lot of people are really curious about Nutrigenomix, and I'm excited to share my personal experience with it. To get started, you order a Nutrigenomix test kit from an authorized practitioner (like me), and they send you a sample kit in the mail. The sample is obtained with an oral swab you do at home, that gets sealed in the kit and mailed back for analysis. The results will be returned to review with your practitioner.
The Nutrigenomix test gives you personalized nutrition recommendations based on genetics - which means that it's tailored just for you! There are 70 genetic markers included for various vitamins, nutrient handling, detoxification processes, and metabolic characteristics too.
Learn more about this testing in this video, where I walk through my personal report.
Along with the DNA sample, you'll be sent a food-frequency questionnaire online. When you fill this questionnaire out, you'll want to be as detailed and accurate as possible with regard to what you have eaten recently (I actually recommend you answer based on how you eat regularly).
Your responses will assist in their final recommendations based on the best foods for you to focus on. This is also where a trained and certified holistic health professional can be of assistance - to further tailor those recommendations for optimal health.
If you're ready to get your own personalized nutrition plan based on your genetics, check out this page for more info:

Fruit on a Low Carb Diet
Does fruit have a place in a low carbohydrate diet?
Like all foods, there are some pros and cons to eating fruit. It’s LOADED with vital nutrients, antioxidants, and fiber - but it’s also filled with sugar - both in the form of glucose and fructose. And this is what makes fruit unique - and a bit challenging.
Glucose and fructose are metabolized differently in the body - and therefore lead to different long term impacts.

Reverse Insulin Resistance FAST

If you haven't yet watched those first two videos, be sure to check them out to see if this information applies to you (ps...it likely does as MOST people have some level of insulin resistance and/or at least one marker of metabolic syndrome).

What are Good or Bad Fats?
Saturated fat has been the subject of dietary scrutiny and restriction since the 1970s. Hundreds of studies have been conducted evaluating the risks associated with consumption.
Sadly, many nutritional studies of all kinds over the years haven't been all that well-designed and many are outright flawed.
This particular paper from the Journal of the American College of Cardiology in August 2020 examined numerous studies over the last several decades to evaluate over 400,000 people and the impacts of saturated fats on cardiovascular disease risk (both incidences and deaths associated).

Is Fiber Necessary or Overhyped?
Do you really need all that fiber the 'experts' recommend?
We've all heard how much fiber we need and that most people don't consume enough fiber. We need it for our colon health, healthy bowel movements, lowering cholesterol, feeding our microbiome...but is it true?
There's a bit of conflicting information in the science, but there are a couple that I'll highlight here today that are pretty compelling on this story!

Antimicrobial Resistance Spreads Through Artificial Sweeteners
We've all heard about super bugs created by overuse of antibiotics - but antimicrobial agents of all kinds can cause this resistance. Resistance is a big deal because it makes an infection so much harder to get rid of (and potentially more deadly). Many non-nutritive sweeteners are actually antimicrobial in nature - they alter the microbes and can even kill off some. The stronger ones resist being killed and share these resistance genes with other microbes!
In this video I discuss this study published in February 2021 in the ISME Journal: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41396-021-00909-x#Sec18
This study examined saccharine, sucralose (Splenda), aspartame, and acesulfame potassium (ace-k) and how these sweeteners impact microbes - specifically how they spread antimicrobial resistance.

Are Carbs Addictive?
Are you addicted to carbs? Do you find they make you hungrier and crave more carbs?
In this video I'm covering a Harvard Medical School brand-new study published in the Journal of Nutrition on this very topic!
They examined 72 overweight adults over 20 weeks, comparing a low carb/high fat, moderate carb/fat, and a high carb/low fat diet along with MRI scans of their brains in a fasted state before eating each day and four hours after their first meal each day.
This study literally looked at the effects of different levels of carbohydrates and fats on the reward center of the brain!

Lower Triglycerides Naturally with Probiotics!
Have you had your lipid/cholesterol panel done and found that you have high triglycerides? Today I'm covering what the latest research is showing - and a brand new strategy for lowering triglycerides naturally!
This research study from 2020 published in the Integrative Medicine: A Clinicians Journal, looked at the effects of spore-based probiotics on people with high triglycerides.
Read this study here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7482325/
Poor gut health has been linked to nearly every chronic disease and a healthy, diverse microbiome has been linked with markers of optimal health.
There are different types of probiotics (see my short video on the three different types) and it is important not to take any one type for too long. This study examined spore-based probiotics because they've been shown to survive the digestive process long enough to make it to different parts of the colon than non-spore based probiotics, and they've been shown to release many beneficial compounds in our gut that boost health and repair damage.

What is Metabolic Syndrome and how it it diagnosed
Research shows 88% of the population are NOT metabolically healthy! Are you one of the 88% or one of the 12%? In this video I walk you through the 5 markers of metabolic syndrome, so you will know which group you fall into.
Metabolic syndrome is also being referred to as Insulin Resistance Syndrome - and it's SO much more than just Diabetes (although that's a BIG deal!).
-Heart disease
-Autoimmune conditions
-Hormone disorders
-Infertility/Sexual dysfunction
-Cancer
Now, the great news is...even if you have one or more of these markers (therefore you're part of the 88%) - these are totally reversible!

Is Eat Less, Exercise More the Right Advice?
When people are trying to lose weight or even just shed a little body fat, the standard advice is to take in less calories than you burn. This can mean workout harder and/or eat less - the conventional model of "dieting".
But does this strategy really work? Is there any science behind it?
There is actually a lot of research - but it doesn't necessarily align with this advice!
In this video, I discuss this meta analysis published in the Journal of Nutrition this month: https://academic.oup.com/jn/article/151/3/482/6020167
