The Western Ohio Railway saw more progress in 2023, with some updates and finishing touches to a few scenes from 2022, as well as major progress on the scenery in Mt. Orebsburg. Larry Lamb's HO Scale Sedarville and Western is a small HO pike that features low speed switching and beautiful scenery. The Sedarville and Ohio was my dad's layout. As you'll see in this video, my dad passed away between the time the video was recorded and when it was published. This video captures the highlights of a typical operating session. I revisit some sites shared previously to give updates on new scenery. A lot of trees added, and a few photo backdrops. The work up to this point was all in preparation for my first open house where I hosted members of the NMRA Division 7 in Cincinnati. The video closes with an updated caboose ride… I really like my caboose rides with the onboard camera.

This is the first video in what I plan to be a series of videos called “How Do”. These videos show how I completed small projects on my layout that I think others may be interested in. I do not consider myself and expert on anything, so the name How Do implies this is one way you can do it. These videos are heavily influenced by ease of effort and minimal cost, and I hope provide inspiration and encouragement for some of you. This particular video is making a camera car. By now, most of you have seen cab view videos on HO scale or larger layouts. It is a cool perspective from which to view a model railroad. But when I started researching, information was hard to find. So I’m sharing what I learned. This video is a little short on action. I wanted to be brief but thorough. I think I met the thorough goal at the expense of being brief. The first sixteen minutes are about building the car and will be of interest to people wanting to do this project. Around the sixteen-minute mark the train ride videos start. I won’t be offended if you jump to that mark in the video. In the video, I said I’d provide the bill of material. BILL OF MATERIALS ---------------------- 1. Camera – Search for “motorcycle helmet camera”. You’ll find manufacturer names like “Wzquisite”, “Anself” and “Cterwk”. 2. Gondola – HO scale gon or flat car. 3. Styrofoam Riser (optional) – 1” inch wide turned on side, cut to fit. BTW, the Styrofoam was pink, I painted it black. 4. Riser Protection (optional) – styrene cut to fit the Styrofoam riser. 5. Rubber band 6. Car Weights 7. Engine Hood (optional) – Only needed if you want to simulate the engine being in your shot. 8. Caboose Roof(optional) – Only needed if you want to simulate the caboose being in your shot. 9. Micro SD Card – Can buy at electronics store / department. Get one with the SD card adaptor for easier use with a computer. White Glue – to secure riser sides and weights to the riser.

This video gives and update on Huhtamaki and Purina, both located in the Afton Industrial Park on my layout. You'll see two more of my photo backdrops. The Huhtamaki scenes was very effectively done with the truck shipping docks modeled along the side of the building perpendicular to the rail loading docks. We take a quick look at the bridges built for Tealtown Road and Salt Run Creek before moving into Mt. Orebsburg. This area is roughed in, and not likely to be completed for a while as I focus on the upper shelf. Most of Main Street on the Williamsburg end of Mt. Orebsburg is in place. While the buildings are not detailed, the general look and feel is starting to take shape. We'll look at trains at each crossing, and see the scene I'm trying to recreate at the old Williamburg Box and Partition building. The bridge over the East Fork River in Williamsburg is also in place, and will soon be getting scenery. The end of that bridge delivers you to Mt. Oreb, where the scenery is not as far along. This video recaps work completed on my HO scale Western Ohio Railway. The Western Ohio Railway is a freelanced railroad company operating between Detroit, Cincinnati and Portsmouth. My layout is inspired by the ex-Norfolk and Western Cincinnati District between Cincinnati and Portsmouth. I model from Clare Yard east of Cincinnati to Sardinia, OH including the Hillsboro branch. This represents the western half of the Peavine. This video shows work completed on the Portsmouth staging yard, the shelf for the Hillsboro branch and the helix completed in early 2022. It also shows test prints for photo backdrops and scenery added to the Afton area. Work has moved east, and the end of the video shows the progress in Mt. Orebsburg at the end of 2022. I created this video for publishing to youtube. As much as I like Rumble, the reality is Rumble doesn't have near the viewership of youtube. So I created the year in review to hopefully get a little more attention over there. In addition to the videos, I also have a web site and a facebook page. On June 10, 2022, I completed temporarily spiking down the last of my mainline and connecting it to the recently finished helix (see https://rumble.com/v14q0re-2022a-construction-update-helix-portsmouth-stagaing-and-the-hillsboro-branc.html?mref=7smot&mc=49a3y) from earlier this year. After making sure a train would run fairly well around the layout, I decided to make a video and share the milestone. In this video, we follow a grain train from east of Newtown to Sardinia. The layout only has scenery around 10% of the track, so I provide a lot of commentary about my plans as we follow the train. 2022-03-19. After a couple of years of dedicated work on the layout, I decided it was time to record what I've been working on. This video features an update on the helix, the Portsmouth staging yard and the shelf for the Hillsboro banch. The helix was by far the most challenging and concerning design effort on the layout. The first half of this video is dedicated to discussion some of the design considerations and sharing how the helix was built. I move on to Portsmouth staging next. The track is laid in this video, so you can see exactly how the yard will exist when I finally reach full operation. The Hillsboro branch sits on top of Portsmouth staging. And while nothing more than a shelf at this point, you will see how easily it fits in place over Portsmouth staging and how much space I have to model an out and back branch line. This is the first video on my new layout inspired by the Norfolk Southern's Cincinnati District, affectionately known as the "Peavine". The layout is very early in construction, and this video is a celebration of the completion of the first section of track. In this video you will see my model of 1218 running on the upper deck of the layout. As impressive as the model is visually, the sound is what really leaves an impression. Originally, this video was supposed to be of 1218 climbing Batavia Hill. But a operational issue left me scared to let her climb the helix. So in 1218's place I added a short grain train behind Western Ohio GP15 number 110. I use this train to show what is completed so far, and identify locations I hope to model in the future.

December 2016 This video captures an entire operating session on my Western Ohio Railway Marien Industrial District layout. At the time of this video, I knew it would soon be dismantled in favor of a larger permanent layout based on the Western Ohio theme. This video shows the work of picking the outbound train from Marien Yard. Then working the industries at the west end of town. After working Ohio Valley Lumber and Premier Plastics, the engines runs around the train to switch industries at the east end of town. A large cereal manufacturing plant with a grain elevator and shipping docks is the anchor industry for town of Marien. In this video, Buckeye MIlls takes delivery of three covered hoppers full of grain. This grain will get turned into breakfast favorites such as Buckeroos, Frosted Buckeroo, Chocolate Buckeroos and Buck-nuts cereal brands. Knott-Fitfur Animal Feed Company and Miss Terri Meats round out the industries served in Marien. Upon completion of the days switching duties, the engine runs around the train again to deliver the outbound cars back to Marien Yard for sorting. The Western Ohio Railway Marien Industrial District was a 2 x 16 foot switching layout. This video was shot for the purpose of preserving what proved to be an excellent model railroad. Built in four foot sections, this layout was displayed three time at the NMRA Division 7 train show.
