Old fashioned operating systems

Windows 2.0 running under MS-DOS 6.22. Back in 1987, the second version of Windows was brought up. It had native support for serial mouse as well as color display. Tje windows design improved with a more intuitive menu, and two arrows to minimize and maximize the window respectively.

Booting MS-DOS 3.30 and Windows 1.01. This operating system appeared back in 1985 and was in fact a MS-DOS app. Color is not supported and neither is Serial Mouse. I solved the issue copying and overwriting the mouse*.drv files from Windows 2.03 setup disk, using an image mounting app. I have also kept the modified setup disk image with the compatible drivers

In the nineties, a new set of Microsoft Windows appeared with remarkable boost. The old MS-DOS.exe disappeared, now replaced with a Program Manager able to contain several windows inside it. Maybe what made this Windows version gain traction is the fact that icons, instead of text-only, appeared for the first time attached to files and applications.

The final success for Microsoft Windows came with its 4.0 version, that is Windows 95. The new design shows the desktop released from an always running app. Instead, the explorer runs in the background to keep Windows session active. Instead of a program manager, a startup menu gathers all the apps and places, making it fast, user friendly and comfortable.

Still attached to MS-DOS, the next Windows version improved its predecessor in design, showing a colourful background for folders and smooth transitions in the menu. The most noticeable thing was its long fetched ability to access network services.
