Car insurance premiums have surged by 22.2% over the past year, according to March’s Consumer Price Index figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, far outpacing the current inflation rate of 3.5%. Over the same 12-month period, car repair costs increased 11.6%, with maintenance and repair costs up 8.2%. Premium costs are accelerating, with March’s 2.6% month-over-month jump in car insurance costs almost three times the size of February’s 0.9% rise, and 12-month increases exceeding 20% over the past four months–the largest increases since the 1970s. New Bill Mandates All New Cars Have ‘Automatic Speed Limit’ Devices. The National Transportation Safety Bureau (NTSB) urged 17 automakers to install intelligent speed-assistance technology in all new vehicles that, at a minimum, warns a driver when the vehicle is speeding. The NTSB stated that the bureau needs intelligent speed assistance technology and countermeasures including interlock program for repeat speeding offenders. What is intelligent speed assistance technology? Here’s the definition, direct from the NTSB press release: “Intelligent speed assistance technology, or ISA, uses a car’s GPS location compared with a database of posted speed limits and its onboard cameras to help ensure safe and legal speeds. Passive ISA systems warn a driver when the vehicle exceeds the speed limit through visual, sound, or haptic alerts, and the driver is responsible for slowing the car. Active systems include mechanisms that make it more difficult, but not impossible, to increase the speed of a vehicle above the posted speed limit and those that electronically limit the speed of the vehicle to fully prevent drivers from exceeding the speed limit.” CA State Senator Scott Wiener, a Democrat from San Francisco, introduced the Speeding and Fatality Emergency Reduction on California Streets Package this week that includes a provision that would require “new vehicles sold in California” to “install speed governors, smart devices that automatically limit the vehicle’s speed to 10 miles above the legal limit.” “These changes are a head-on attempt to tackle vehicle fatalities, which are surging across the U.S.—and especially in California—amid a rise in reckless driving since the onset of the pandemic,” a press release from Wiener’s office explained. “A recent report from TRIP, a national transportation research group, found that traffic fatalities in California have increased by 22% from 2019 to 2022, compared to 19% for the U.S. overall. In 2022, 4,400 Californians died in car crashes.” The bill package also “requires side under ride guards on trucks, to reduce the risk of cars and bikes being pulled underneath the truck during a crash” and “physical improvements like new crosswalks and curb extensions on state-owned surface streets to better accommodate pedestrians, cyclists, the disability community, and transit users.” The press release argues that these changes are meant to “slash” the “California road deaths epidemic.” “The alarming surge in road deaths is unbearable and demands an urgent response,” Wiener said. Not everyone is on board with the legislation, including social media users who expressed frustration with the plan. This is the first step in monitoring driving habits and taxing motorists by the miles driven and time on the road. Don’t forget the kill switches from the 2021 infrastructure rule which is in all 2026 and later cars. We have one last chance to remove these stupid regulations. If this law is enacted it’s almost guaranteed that a speed governor test will be added to the biennial smog inspection. The device will be required to be installed before allowing license registration of out of state vehicles. Rental-car company is the latest to be hit by weak demand for electric cars. Hertz Global Holdings Inc. said Thursday it is selling about 20,000 electric vehicles from its fleet, or about one-third of the total, in the latest sign that the EV revolution is stalling amid weak demand from consumers. The move is aimed at better balancing supply and expected demand for EVs, allowing the car-rental company to scrap a disproportionate number of lower-margin rentals and reduce damage expenses associated with EVs. Collision and damage costs for EVs remained high in the fourth quarter, Hertz said in a regulatory filing. That’s because EVs require special tools and parts and specialist knowledge to repair after a crash, more so than traditional gas-powered vehicles. The charge is on top of the depreciation costs the company expects to record in the quarter in the ordinary course of managing its fleet. Hertz will continue to offer EVs but will implement measures to boost profitability, including by expanding infrastructure such as charging stations and expanding relationships with EV makers, particularly as it relates to more affordable access to parts and labor, the company said. Hertz will reinvest in additional internal-combustion-engine vehicles and expects to improve profits or earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, across 2024, as vehicles are rotated. ➡️ Looking for more automotive news? The BMW M2 has a 3L twin-turbo inline-6 with a 6-speed manual transmission or an 8-speed automatic transmission, 453 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque, standard RWD. This feisty. small BMW M2 Coupé with incredible acceleration has the same engine that’s in the M3 and M4 models but it has been detuned by 20 horsepower. The M2 comes standard with adaptive M suspension, active M differential and M compound brakes. The characteristics of the chassis can be individually adjusted for a more comfortable or sportier ride. Chinese electric car giants are building in Mexico, it’s alarming the USA! Holy crap, if China starts building cars in Mexico, and is able to import them to the US with the tax credit because of the way, the infrastructure bill is written it will destroy the US auto market. Three major Chinese EV companies are planning new factories in Mexico, per the Financial Times. This includes Tesla rival #byd, fellow giants MG (SAIC) and Chery are in talks over new sites in Mexico and this is alarming US officials. The move will likely fuel fears that Chinese firms may use Mexico as a backdoor into the US #ev market. And the price will be lower than what’s on the market today. This may sound good for consumers, but there is a lot of negative impact you may be missing. This investment is causing angst in Washington as it seeks to keep China out of the US electric car market. Remember that China controls the bulk of the battery materials used in electric vehicles. US officials have reportedly raised concerns with their Mexican counterparts over Chinese investment, with the new sites potentially including a new $1.5 to $2 billion MG electric car factory and a factory investment worth hundreds of millions of dollars from Warren Buffett-backed Tesla rival BYD. China's electric vehicle market is booming, and local manufacturers are increasingly looking to expand overseas amid cutthroat competition for customers back home. China also dominates the global electric vehicle battery supply chain, allowing it to produce far cheaper EVs than many of its US rivals. The US has attempted to protect the US market by unveiling new rules earlier this month to make it more difficult for EVs made with Chinese parts to qualify for tax breaks. But the possible expansion of Chinese automakers into Mexico, which recently replaced China as the US' biggest trading partner, will fuel fears that it could serve as a backdoor. Lawmakers on a select committee on China recently warned that stronger trade rules may be needed to prevent Chinese automakers from "gaining a backdoor to the US market" through its trading partners. Mexico has proven a tempting target for carmakers in recent years, thanks to its low labor costs and a free-trade agreement with the US and UAW. #tesla is planning to build a gigafactory near Monterrey, Mexico, where it is expected to produce its long-awaited $25,000 electric car. Chinese EVs are pouring into Europe for one really big reason. They can charge twice as much for their vehicles. For example, the BYD Dolphin costs $15,500 in China but it’s $39,000 in Europe. Tesla’s China-made Model 3 sells for 13,000 euros more in Europe than it does in China. Even though Chinese automakers double the price, they’re still selling EVs cheaper than what European automakers charge. Aside from shipping costs and a 10% import tariff, those higher prices are pure profit. And that’s why Chinese EVs are flooding into Europe. For more than a decade, China's car manufacturers had a presence at the main Auto Shows in the United States with promises that they would start selling their models in this market back in 2022. Obviously, those plans didn't pay off, but his new strategy could change everything very soon. By building electric vehicles in #mexico Chinese car companies could enter the #usa market under more favorable conditions. According to the Agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada, 75% a vehicle must be manufactured in the North American region for its manufacturer to avoid paying import duties and although there are currently no Chinese car brands available for purchase at United States, vehicles made in #china are already sold in the United States, mainly from the Swedish brand Volvo – and its new high performance division Polestar. Germany has decided to end its electric vehicle subsidy immediately. On Wednesday, December 13th, German leaders announced the ending of these subsidies due to 2024 budget concerns. There was an environmental purchase premium for e-cars of up to 6,000 euros ($6,555 US). On of the foremost proponents of E-Mobility in Germany, has now fully backtracked: Professor Ferdinand Dudenhöffer, Germany’s leading automotive analyst, just posted on LinkedIn: “That’s it for the EVs in Germany; its good if you haven’t written off the combustion engines, I was entirely wrong on the fatherland.” Germany has killed the subsidy because the government’s budget was rules unconstitutional by the German Supreme Court and they needed to cut subsidies wherever possible. Germany has been of the forefront of electrification since former chancellor Angela Merkel proclaimed her support; German brands have aggressively pushed for the "transformation", but customers haven't followed along because of the high cost, the reduced utility and the hidden environmental impact of EV.s, stated Jens Meiner, chairman emeritus of WCOTY: “EV sales have been a massive disappointment in Europe and it seems that the pundits and politicians are moving away from it as fast as they can. I am not surprised, considering it’s an inferior product.” "At the end of December 17, 2023, no new applications for the environmental bonus can be submitted..,” stated the German Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Protection. The environmental bonus was introduced by the Grand Coalition in 2016. Since then, a total of around 10 billion euros has been paid out for 2.1 million electric vehicles. Those in favor of the subsidy stated that, “This decision is a blow to the mobility turnaround and climate protection. With the abrupt capping of the promotion of e-cars, the Minister of Economic Affairs is torpedoing the acceptance of electric driving in Germany." Germany's move comes amid tighter restrictions on EV subsidies in France. As of Dec. 15, France effectively limited EV subsidies of up to 7,000 euros ($7,636 US) to electric cars made in Europe. Chinese-made vehicles, including the Tesla Model 3, are no longer eligible. The Model Y will still be eligible because Tesla makes the crossover at its Berlin-area plant. New Zealand's EV purchase-subsidy program, the "Clean Car Rebate" stops at the end of 2023. Here in the USA, there are fewer electric vehicles that will qualify for the federal tax credits. Purchases of popular models like the Tesla Model 3 and the Ford Mustang Mach-E may no longer entitle buyers to tax savings because the cars do not meet tougher sourcing requirements. The Treasury Department’s Dec. 1 update on the Inflation Reduction Act credit rules involving “foreign entity of concern” requirements, which include China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran impacts the tax credits for consumers. What is eligible for 2024, not that many vehicles, only 10 cars: * Chevrolet Bolt EV * Chevrolet Equinox EV * Ford F-150 Lightning * Tesla Model 3 Performance * Chevrolet Silverado EV * Tesla Model Y Performance * Chrysler Pacifica PHEV * Chevrolet Blazer EV * Cadillac LYRIQ * Tesla Model X Starting in 2024, the 40% critical minerals requirement increases to 50%, then 60% in 2025, 70% in 2026 and 80% in 2027. The 50% battery components requirement increases to 60% in 2024 and 2025, 70% in 2026, 80% in 2027, 90% in 2028 and 100% in 2029. Every government, not just Germany, should get politicians out of people's lives, including deciding what kind of car they can manufacture and buy. Let the free market decide based on supply and demand. Is America's Electric Car Revolution Stalled? 'Making Money' host Charles Payne and Car Coach Reports sector analyst Lauren Fix discuss the government's push to force-feed electric vehicles to Americans.

The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, a lobbying group in the U.S. that represents most major automakers, is once again criticizing the Biden Administration’s proposal to boost fuel economy standards. NHTSA is proposing to increase requirements at a rate of 2% per year for passenger cars and 4% per year for trucks and SUVs from 2027 to 2032. This would result in a Corporate Average Fuel Economy or CAFE target of 58 MPG for an automaker’s fleet. The Alliance says this will result in vehicle prices increasing $3,000 on average by 2032 because of fines automakers will receive for not being able to comply. Last month, the Alliance claimed automakers will face more than $14 billion in fines for non-compliance if NHTSA doesn’t revise its proposal. A group representing General Motors, Toyota Motors, Volkswagen Group and nearly all other major automakers on Monday sharply criticized the Biden administration proposal to drastically hike fuel efficiency requirements. The Alliance for Automotive Innovation said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (#NHTSA) Corporate Average Fuel Economy (#CAFE) proposal was unreasonable and requested significant revisions. The American Automotive Policy Council (a group representing the Detroit Three automakers) separately on Monday urged NHTSA to halve its proposed fuel economy increases to 2% annually for trucks, saying the proposal "would disproportionately impact the truck fleet." The group noted 83% of vehicles produced by Ford, GM, and Chrysler parent Stellantis are trucks. NHTSA said its rule "is focused on saving Americans money at the gas pump and strengthening American energy independence," estimating combined benefits of its proposal exceed costs by more than 18 billion dollars. The auto alliance said automakers would face more than 14 billion dollars in non-compliance penalties between 2027 and 2032. U.S. automakers separately have warned the fines would cost GM 6.5 billion, Stellantis 3 billion and Ford 1 billion dollars. Automakers also raised alarm at the Energy Department's proposal to significantly revise how it calculates the petroleum-equivalent fuel economy rating for EVs in NHTSA's CAFE program, saying it would "devalue the fuel economy of electric vehicles by 72%." GM said on Monday it could support NHTSA's proposal if the Energy Department rescinded its petroleum-equivalent proposal. Volkswagen, which could face over 800 million dollars in CAFE fines through 2032, said NHTSA's proposal "is arbitrary, capricious, and an abuse of the agency's discretion to set standards that are not feasible." Subaru said even if the NHTSA proposal was feasible "the current proposals do not allow for sufficient fleet ramp up to the necessary levels of electric vehicles." Automakers and the United Auto Workers union have previously also complained parallel rules proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency are not feasible and should be significantly softened. We covered a story regarding the Biden-approved 2021 infrastructure bill that holds Section 24220 regarding a requirement for automakers to begin including a “vehicle kill switch” within the operating software of new cars that’s capable of disabling a vehicle from operating if it detects driver impairment. The system is described in the bill as “advanced drunk and impaired driving prevention technology,” the measure is positioned as a safety tool to help prevent drunk driving. By 2026, the kill switch is be mandated on every new car sold in the United States. Really The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has published its preliminary report on the mandate, laying out the challenges facing its implementation. NHTSA is seeking feedback from the public on the issue. According to The Washington Post, the agency is curious to learn if the public will accept the potential for false positives that could prevent sober drivers from operating a vehicle. Just imagine an emergency, but you can’t do anything because your car won’t start due to a false positive. Or any other situation for that matter, we’re sure your boss would understand if you called in saying you won’t make it to work because your car’s “prevention technology” had a false positive. Or any other urgent emergency with life threatening implications. Even if the system is 99.9 percent accurate, that could still amount to a million false positives a day, which is something all of us will have to deal with if this system is implemented. The NHTSA also wants to know how the government should educate the public about technology-related privacy concerns. The concerns include listening to you in your car; tracking your eyes; (they’re already doing through the Gentex system and many other similar systems) as well as tracking your driving inputs including steering, location, gas and brake pedal. More sensors mean more data collection, posing further privacy concerns. The Automotive Coalition for Traffic Safety aims to have a working drunk-driver detector by the end of 2025, and automakers will have to figure out how to install it in new cars even as the agency notes the system could increase costs and complexity, which will undoubtedly be passed onto the consumer. Great cars will even more expensive. Be sure to make your voice heard regarding this new proposal at regualtions.gov by searching for the docket number, NHTSA-2022-0079, and follow the instructions once it’s been published to the federal register. You can also mail or fax your comments to the US Department of Transportation. People are infuriated that this rule that Rep. Thomas Massie has tried to strip from the bill. Now is your chance. Speak up and let them know that this is a very bad idea, and it puts lives at risk. Let’s bury them with comments, emails, and voice messages, and let them know how you feel. It’s two years later than intended, but Tesla made its first deliveries of the Cybertruck to retail customers yesterday. Public reaction ranged from cheers to boos. Some people loved it, while most can’t get past the radical styling. Like Ford’s Lightning and Chevy’s Sliverado EV, pricing for the Cybertruck is coming in significantly higher than initial announcements from the company. The base RWD version will have a starting price of just under $61,000 before destination charges and any incentives. But that truck won’t be available until 2025. The first versions to launch next year are the AWD model that starts at roughly $80-grand and the Cybertruck, which comes in just shy of $100,000. No word on battery sizes just yet, but the RWD model has an estimated 250 miles of range, will do 0-60 in 6.5 seconds and have the ability to tow up to 7,500 pounds. AWD bumps range up to 340 miles and towing to 11,000 pounds and drops 0-60 to 4.1 seconds. The 845-horsepower tri-motor Cybertruck has 320 miles of range, will do 0-60 in 2.6 seconds and also has 11,000 pounds of towing capacity. When Tesla first announced the Cybertruck, it said it would have over 500 miles of range. But in order to get close to that figure, it’s also offering a range extender, which is an additional battery pack that takes up about ⅓ of the Cybertruck’s bed. It’s estimated to boost the range of the AWD model to over 470 miles and the Cybertruck to over 440 miles. Elon Musk says this is intended for long trips or when towing. One of the most important aspects of the Cybertruck that I think too many people are glossing over is that Tesla switched to a 48-volt system for its power electronics, meaning things like headlights and interior components. A system like this allows you to send a lot more power to those electronics without raising the current, which means you can use much thinner and lighter wiring. It’s estimated that Tesla could cut the amount of wiring in the Cybertruck by 70%. Another first for the company is bidirectional charging. This includes the ability to send power to your home or another EV, which can also be done through a set of plugs in the bed that put out up to 9.6 kW of power. Rounding out the highlights of the Cybertruck are a new steer-by-wire system and 4WS as well. When trucks finally hitting customer hands we will get more comments.
