The French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne is in the Lebanese capital Beirut for talks aimed at easing tensions between Hezbollah and Israel.
Earlier this year, Sejourne proposed Hezbollah’s elite unit pull back 10km (6 miles) from the Israeli border while Israel would halt strikes in southern Lebanon. The written proposal also looked at long-term border issues.
“If I look at the situation today, if there were not a war in Gaza, we could be talking about a war in southern Lebanon given the number of strikes and the impact on the area,” Sejourne said after speaking to United Nations peacekeeping force commanders.
Talking after meeting Lebanon’s influential Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri, an ally of Hezbollah, and the head of the Lebanese army, Joseph Aoun, Sejourne said there had been “a lot of progress” over the French proposals.

Guests attending the annual White House Correspondents dinner were greeted with chants of 'shame on you', by protesters opposed to President Biden's handling of the war.
The US president has spoken at the annual White House Correspondents’ dinner, offering a toast to “press freedom and democracy” but making no mention of Israel’s war on Gaza that has killed at least 97 journalists.
Many also demanded members of the media boycott the event in support of the 142 Palestinian journalists killed by Israeli forces.

The White House says it wants “answers” from Israeli authorities after the discovery of mass graves at Gaza hospitals destroyed in Israeli sieges.
More than 300 bodies of people – allegedly killed and buried by Israeli forces at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis – have so far been recovered. Other graves at al-Shifa Hospital in northern were also located.
“We want answers. We want to see this thoroughly and transparently investigated,” National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told reporters Israeli army spokesman Major Nadav Shoshani said the graves at Nasser were “dug by Gazans a few months ago”.
Hospitals, which have protection under international law, have repeatedly come under Israeli bombardment during more than six months of war in Gaza.
