According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, mental illness is defined as a condition that negatively affects a person's thinking, feeling or mood for a sustained period of time. You might be wondering “Is depression a mental illness? What about anxiety?” Yes, they are. In fact, they are the most common types of mental illnesses.
