The area was nice, quiet, and near amenities (laundry mat, grocery store). A magnificent church sat directly across the street, with a beautifully-treed courtyard area out front. The room, in the 5th floor walkup, was located on 88th Street, between 1st and 2nd Avenue. Nearby, on 86th Street, that lead to the subway, was a movie theatre, a grocery store, an electronics store, a phone store, a Barnes & Nobles (free events), a Shake Shack, and at the corner of 88th and 1st was a Vietnamese restaurant with delicious food and reasonably priced lunch specials. My friend, Marian, who I met on the set of "Spiderman" movie, we were both BackGround (BG) actors aka "extras", and I would go to the restaurant for lunch. Here's a video tour of a 7' x 10' room that I rented, and the apartment in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York City. The lease holder slept in the living room. Her computer desk was just outside the door to my room. LOL. The leaseholder kept the place filthy. Glassware pots on the stove, with half-eaten foot, lids sitting askew, roaches crawling inside and outside of the pots. One afternoon or evening, I arrive and she offers me some tea. I accept. I'm about to finish drinking the tea and I lift the tea bag, in order to finish it all in one gulp. As I'm lifting the tea bag out of the mug, I see a big cockroach, dead, clinging to the bottom of the teabag. I walk into the kitchen to tell her, and show her the teabag, and she smiles and says something like "Oh, I guess I didn't see that, at least it's dead". Feeling sick, I toss the teabag in the garbage and wash the mug, then go into the bathroom to take a shower. In the bathroom, I see smeared, dried brown stuff on the toilet seat, toilet seat handle, sink. I rub some of it off with toilet paper and take a sniff. Smells like feces. I started looking for another place and eventually moved to Bushwick, Brooklyn, New York, a place inhabited by seemingly friendlier people and lot of event spaces with free or cheap events. In my first novel, there's a character named Jill, a street photographer, and her roommate is modeled after the roommate I had in Manhattan. In the background holding area on "Growing Up and Other Lies" in the basement area of a church. When I lived in New York City, I worked as an extra aka BackGround (BG) actor for film and television. This was one of the early background acting jobs and we're in holding (where the extras hang out in between takes). This holding area, like many of them, happened to be at a church, in the basement, stairs. One of the neat thing about being an extra is all the places and interesting locations and holding areas, that you see around the New York City area. It's like being part of a fun exclusive club where most of the people are not snobby. I was pretty excited about being there, so I'm walking around taking a video which, in some cases is a no-no. LOL. At the time of this video audition, I lived in Upper East Side of New York City, on 88th Street, between 1st and 2nd Avenue, in a fifth floor walkup. My room was approximately 7" wide x 10" across and maybe 12" high ceilings. I didn't have much in the way of possessions, which worked out well. Across the street was a magnificent church. During my time in New York City, for the most part, I worked as an extra aka BackGround (BG) actor for film and television. It was a fun job that was a combination of after school detention for creatives of all ages combined with a field trip, as we were taken to different locations for film and TV shoots, some which are hard to get entry to, such as the UN (United Nations) building and other locations.
