Even though Britain remains undefeated, it is so isolated that Hitler has no concerns about turning his attention East. In Search of Amelia Earhart is the 1972 debut album by Plainsong. It was released on October 6, 1972, by Elektra Records.
Plainsong was a British country rock/folk rock band, formed in early 1972 by Ian (later Iain) Matthews, formerly of Fairport Convention and Matthews Southern Comfort, and Andy Roberts, previously of The Liverpool Scene. The band's line-up consisted of Matthews, Roberts, Dave Richards (died January 2019) and Bob Ronga (died November 2012). The original group lasted basically a year, splitting up in December 1972. Ronga had already left the band by then due to a drinking problem and Matthews and Richards did not see eye to eye over their musical direction during the recording of a planned second album, the unissued Plainsong III. Both Matthews and Roberts resumed making solo albums in 1973 following Plainsong's demise.
Ian Matthews played in four different band incarnations within three years. He had left Fairport Convention to form his own band, Matthews Southern Comfort, put out two solo LPs for Vertigo Records, and then started the band Plainsong. It is probably fair to say that In Search of Amelia Earhart is the pinnacle of Matthews' work in the 1970s. Working with producer Sandy Roberton (Hard Meat, Steeleye Span, Shirley Collins), Ian and bandmates, notably Andy Roberts who shared vocals on the album, created an atypical British folk album conceived around the idea of the legends surrounding Amelia Earhart and her supposed demise. Both Matthews and Roberts had read the 1966 book The Search for Amelia Earhart by CBS news correspondent Fred Goerner hypothesizing that Earhart and her flying companion Frederick Noonan had crashed around the Japanese held Marshall Islands area and been taken prisoner by the Japanese on Saipan, in the Marianas, in 1937. Their Lockheed Electra plane had supposedly been outfitted with aerial cameras and had a bigger fuel tank than anyone outside of the US government knew. After being grilled by Japanese interrogators Earhart would perish of dysentery, and Noonan was beheaded by the Japanese according to this still unproven theory.
The album at the time was widely perceived as being a concept album, but not all of the songs on the album are directly about Amelia Earhart. But the album carries that somber, mellow tone in which so much great folk music of the early ’70s was in touch. Many of the songs are about seeing and reaching for light, whether they be the light of day or the light of death. So in a way the album is more about the way people felt about, cared about and thought about Amelia Earhart and her death. That she is still considered a heroine of aviation and a distinctly American hero keeps the mystery of what happened to her in the greater cultural imagination.

The Falklands War | Modern World
The Falklands War (Spanish: Guerra de Malvinas) was a ten-week undeclared war between Argentina and the United Kingdom in 1982 over two British dependent territories in the South Atlantic: the Falkland Islands and its territorial dependency, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. The conflict began on 2 April 1982, when Argentina invaded and occupied the Falkland Islands, followed by the invasion of South Georgia the next day. On 5 April, the British government dispatched a naval task force to engage the Argentine Navy and Air Force before making an amphibious assault on the islands. The conflict lasted 74 days and ended with an Argentine surrender on 14 June, returning the islands to British control. In total, 649 Argentine military personnel, 255 British military personnel, and three Falkland Islanders were killed during the hostilities.
The conflict was a major episode in the protracted dispute over the territories' sovereignty. Argentina asserted (and maintains) that the islands are Argentine territory, and the Argentine government thus characterised its military action as the reclamation of its own territory. The British government regarded the action as an invasion of a territory that had been a Crown colony since 1841. Falkland Islanders, who have inhabited the islands since the early 19th century, are predominantly descendants of British settlers, and strongly favour British sovereignty. Neither state officially declared war, although both governments declared the islands a war zone.
The conflict had a strong effect in both countries and has been the subject of various books, articles, films, and songs. Patriotic sentiment ran high in Argentina, but the unfavourable outcome prompted large protests against the ruling military government, hastening its downfall and the democratisation of the country. In the United Kingdom, the Conservative government, bolstered by the successful outcome, was re-elected with an increased majority the following year. The cultural and political effect of the conflict has been less in the UK than in Argentina, where it has remained a common topic for discussion.
Diplomatic relations between the United Kingdom and Argentina were restored in 1989 following a meeting in Madrid, at which the two governments issued a joint statement. No change in either country's position regarding the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands was made explicit. In 1994, Argentina adopted a new constitution, which declared the Falkland Islands as part of one of its provinces by law. However, the islands continue to operate as a self-governing British Overseas Territory.

London, Europe's largest and busiest metropolis, is visited by 28 million tourists every year. They come for the history, culture and entertainment, but behind the glamor of the bright lights lies a hidden, sinister city that most travelers never get to see. This is the Hidden City of London.
London is a city with a rich history, but you can't see it all from a double-decker bus. In this program we explore a secret underground world. We hunt for the ghosts of past centuries and solve the most famous English mystery - Jack the Ripper.
In 1888, Jack the Ripper was the most feared name in London. The Ripper preyed on East End prostitutes and brutally murdered five women in just ten weeks, but to this day his true identity remains a mystery. In Victorian England, London's East End was a bleak network of narrow cobbled streets shrouded in thick smog, where life was hard.
Every year on November 5, hundreds of bonfires burn across the city as millions of people celebrate Guy Fawkes Night. Guy Fawkes was a seventeenth-century terrorist caught trying to blow up the Houses of Parliament with two tons of gunpowder. Fawkes was imprisoned in one of the most cruel and terrifying places - the Tower of London.
The West End is the Broadway of Europe. This is a theater area with more than 40 theaters in one square mile. The Theater Royal on Drury Lane is hundreds of years old and seats 2,500 spectators, both living and dead. Mark Fox has worked at the theater since 1992 and claims to know of at least three ghosts haunting the building and has a possible explanation for one of them.
In search of London's darkest secrets, we sail up the Thames to one of England's most magnificent palaces. Hampton Court represents 500 years of royal history, and with it, countless ghosts.
Westminster, in the heart of London, is Britain's political center and home to vital national security issues, but these buildings were not built to withstand the lightning attacks of World War II. Instead, Winston Churchill's war cabinet held its meetings in a top secret location underground. Churchill's war rooms, now a museum, remain as they were when they were abandoned in 1945.

The Bermuda Triangle, also known as the Devil's Triangle, is an urban legend focused on a loosely defined region in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean where a number of aircraft and ships are said to have disappeared under mysterious circumstances. The idea of the area as uniquely prone to disappearances arose in the mid-20th century, but most reputable sources dismiss the idea that there is any mystery.

The truth behind the legend. Fact or Fiction? The legend of the Loch Ness monster dates back 1500 years. Since then, thousands of eye witnesses, countless photographs, sonar records and films have testified to the existence of a Loch Ness monster. Yet despite extensive exploration, observation and scientific analysis, still no real evidence has been discovered.
This documentary takes us through the story of the Loch Ness monster and starts us off charting the early history of the legend. From the first sighting by St Columba in 565AD, to the 'Spicer' sighting that kicked off the modern legend in 1933 and the world famous 'Surgeon's Photo' from 1934 that captured what appeared to be a head and neck emerging from Loch Ness. From the ‘Surgeon’s Photo’, the press, frenzied public and scientific observers soon concluded that the creature living in the loch was a long-extinct dinosaur called a plesiosaur. A preposterous suggestion it would seem. A fish thought to be extinct 80 million years ago but discovered in 1938, to much surprise, living off the coast of Madagascar.
So just how real is the Loch Ness monster? Is it all rumours, conspiracy and speculation? Where is the photographic evidence? Many questions that will be answered throughout this documentary..

If you had to pick seven ancient wonders of the world, which ones would they be? We've compiled a list of our top 7, from the soaring heights of the Great Pyramid, to the statues of Easter Island, exotic Mayan temples, a Roman amphitheatre, and the Great Wall of China.
In this documentary we explore some of the most awesome ancient wonders, each rich in stories of mystery and intrigue. We take part in the summer solstice celebrations at Stonehenge, walk the Great Wall of China, and join archaeologists in Mexico as they hunt for treasure in the Mayan temples. By searching for clues hidden with these historic monuments we can begin to unlock their secrets and reveal the marvels of these ancient wonders of the world.
Great Pyramid of Giza:
The three pyramids of Giza have stood on a high plateau by the Nile for more than 4,500 years. These wonders were built by the ancient Egyptian King Khufu, his son, and his grandson. Khufu's Great Pyramid is the largest and most impressive of them all
Tower of London:
The oldest palace and fortress in Europe. Behind this facade of respectability lie dark blood-curdling tales of terror, sinister acts born of ruthless ambition. For over 900 years these monumental walls have overshadowed the city of London. Even today the Tower of London is one of the capital's most prominent landmarks.
The Colosseum:
A marvel of Roman engineering and the greatest amphitheatre ever built. This huge stadium was designed so that as many Romans as possible could watch the most cruel and violent games the world has ever seen. Thousands died here in the name of popular entertainment.
Stonehenge:
Deep in the heart of the English countryside lies what is possibly the oldest structure on Earth. This is Stonehenge. It was built by prehistoric man and yet amazingly this extraordinary monument is aligned with the cosmos. The arrangement of the stones can predict exactly when the sun and the moon eclipse, and on the longest day of the year, they line up precisely with the midsummer sunrise.
Great Wall of China:
Built across mountain ranges up to 8,000 feet high, the Great Wall of China is a feet of engineering unparalleled in the world. It extends over 4,500 miles from North Korea to the wastes of the Gobi Desert, the same distance as from Miami to the North Pole. The Great Wall of China is the longest manmade structure on the planet.
Easter Island Moai:
This is one of the most isolated places on Earth, yet every year 20,000 tourists make the journey here to see some of the strangest wonders of the world. Easter Island is over 2,000 miles from the nearest habitation in Chile, it's a place with a tragic history, where the events of the past almost destroyed an entire population. 887 gigantic statues dot the island.
Lost City of Palenque:
In the 18th century the Spanish priest was sent by his bishop to explore the dense jungle of Central America. Searching for new land to cultivate he stumbled upon some hauntingly beautiful ruins rising spectacularly out of the forest. This was the Lost City of Palenque.

The film (originally titled "Fighting Lady") is a 1944 documentary film produced by the United States Navy and narrated by Lieutenant Robert Taylor USNR. The film chronicles the exploits of the Essex-class aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CV-10) (unknown in the film) during World War II in her first major operations after her commissioning in 1943. Due to wartime restrictions, the carrier's name was disguised as "Battle Lady". ("Fighting Lady" was a famous nickname for Yorktown, just as "Lady Lex" was for Lexington, "Big E" for Enterprise, etc.)
The life of the crew is documented from July 1943 to June 1944, from the passage through the Panama Canal, attacks on Marcus, Kwajalein, Truk and Tinian Islands and ending with the famous "Marianas Turkey Shoot", the air portion of the battle. in the Philippine Sea, when American pilots shot down almost four hundred Japanese Zeros, while suffering only twenty-two losses.
The film included color footage shot with “pistol cameras” mounted directly on aircraft guns during the battle. This gives the film a very realistic feel, with the chronological progression of the ship and crew reflecting the experiences of the sailors and pilots as they progressed from recruits to the rigors of military life. It contains rare footage of A-24 Dauntlesses, TBF Avengers, Hellcats and other aircraft in action. The maps illustrate the movements of the Pacific Fleet and its interaction with the Japanese.
The film emphasizes the adage that war is 99% boring. We see footage of everyday life on board the ship, from the sailors stuck on command duty to the crews in charge of arming and fueling the planes and the pilots who flew them.
The Fighting Lady won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 1945.
