It turns out that both gain half a kilogram weight. But for the lighter day pack this implies that it becomes 40% heavier when wet. The larger pack became 24% heavier. From this I conclude that the main part that gains weight when wet is the harness and hip belt. This means that using a rain cover will not help. So if you want to avoid this extra weight with your heavy pack, perhaps it is best to use a poncho that covers the pack too. But a poncho also adds weight, my own weighs 278 grams. To my surprise, they failed miserably. Pity, because they are really comfortable and warm, with a good ankle support, and incredibly affordable. They come with water repellent materials on the surface and this is basically the only waterproofness they have. But this stuff washes out quickly, and after that boots will absorb water if exposed to it for several minutes or so. You will notice this only when it is too late. They are basically useless for hiking in the rain.
