SPOTLIGHT Pay TV - Rare Intro and Channel ID From 1982
SPOTLIGHT Pay TV Feature Presentation into with a PG rated notice and a channel ID tag.
SPOTLIGHT was a short-lived U.S. Pay TV cable channel which operated from May 1981 until February 1984. It couldn't survive once it's competitors (HBO & Showtime) started acquiring exclusive film licensing contracts.
But Spotlight was a neat little underdog channel, which we got free from our cable system because the old turn dial cable boxes let us pick it up on the channel between the first and last #'s on the turn dial converter box, which was supposed to be dead space.
Eventually, our cable company (Storer Cable - one of the four main investors in the struggling pay channel) began realizing this glitch and in Fall of 1982 they began requesting that customers bring in their converter boxes to their office and exchange for a brand new new digital one. Of course, the cable company wasn't admitting to the real reason, and just said that it was so that they could offer more channels in the future and there were hints of things to come, like pay per view (which our town didn't even get until the early 90s).
The old converter boxes were cool because they would allow you to pick up some of the random satellite feeds to channels that weren't offered by our Cable co, like another pay channel called HTN (Home Theater Network - infamous for not showing anything above a PG rating), and sometimes the HBO West coast Satellite feed would be broadcast in the AM hours.
So, I had begged my parents to hold off until the cable office's deadline date because I knew what they were really doing, and we were going to lose Spotlight and the other little surprises.
These notices regarding the swap were posted on the bulletin board channel, and there was one announcement later on that was like a threat to customers, saying that time was running out, and if customers didn't turn your box in by such and such date, they would start going around to knock on doors, cutting service, etc. Hmmm.. it sort of reminds me of the tactics that they used with the vaccines ("Our patience is running out"). Ha Ha.
The other big change and reason that they wanted people to upgrade was because you could watch the pay TV channels that you didn't subscribe to with scrambled video, but full audio. The new digital converters corrected all of this and would switch to a snowy signal a second or two after switching to the channel. However, I remember my friends and I still had a way around that; you could just keep hitting the converter box's recall button and it would keep switching to the channel. Yeah, it was sad, tedious and desperate, but hey, that's what kids did back in those days with limited options.

THE MOVIE CHANNEL November 1981 Promo Bumper Block - Great Memories
My family got cable television back towards the end of October 1981, so this material aired about two weeks later.
I recall fond memories of life back then, with friends in the neighborhood coming over after school and on the weekends, and family life around the house while promos like this were on in the background as white noise.
This was also back during a time when everything centered around fanfare and presentation, and where all television was by appointment only. Unlike today, cable television only had about 35-50 channels. So, most of them would put more effort into grabbing your attention to get you to watch, because it was a big deal when the movies came to pay television (HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, The Movie Channel, HTN and Spotlight), and the only way for most people to see movies back then (if you didn't have cable) was to either go to the movie theater or drive in or see it edited on network tv (ABC, NBC or CBS). Back then, there were no neighborhood video stores, since that phenomenon was just on the horizon a year or two later, and there was no pay per view or HBO or Showtime multi-channel offerings.
So, these pay-tv promos were exciting to me as a kid, because it was a gateway or bridge to a whole new world of movies. I just consumed them like a sponge.
Unfortunately, these days are long gone, and these channels are now all owned by 3 - 5 soulless corporations. There's little to no fanfare now in the way of promotion or presentation, it's just "here's your movie", and they crank them out like an assembly line, or present them in some way so that you can't really enjoy the experience the same way you could back then. I remember when Showtime used to show their logo several times during whatever movie they were playing (for anti-piracy reasons, I'm sure), but it drove me crazy. Now it's the norm on every channel, and we have to be reminded what we're watching it on what's coming on next. These channels are all just hollow shell of their former selves now. I consider 1981-'85 to be the golden era for pay TV.
For example, I believe that this was greatest logo for "The Movie Channel", compared to the ones that were used later on, such as tmc logo, which in my opinion, gutted the whole spirit of the channel entirely throughout the 90's. Now all we have are the memories of simpler time.

BOWERY AT MIDNIGHT (1942) Bela Lugosi Thiller - Public Domain Film - Restored
Bowery at Midnight is a 1942 American thriller directed by Wallace Fox and starring Bela Lugosi, John Archer and Wanda McKay.
Lugosi plays a psychology professor by day who, secretly and under an assumed name, runs a Bowery soup kitchen by night called the Bowery Friendly Mission. Lugosi's character uses his soup kitchen as a means to recruit members of a criminal gang, of which he is also secretly the head. Throughout the film, one of Lugosi's henchmen, a doctor who seems to be an alcoholic drug addict, alludes to having plans for the corpses of henchmen Lugosi has had killed. Then, at the end of the film, these corpses are revealed to have been restored to life by the doctor. Lugosi's character meets his demise when the doctor leads the unwitting Lugosi into a basement room where the reanimated corpses attack him. Towards the end of the film, the male lead, played by John Archer, appears to be killed and mysteriously reanimated, in which state his girlfriend sees him. Then, in the film's final scene, he appears restored to his former health, and not like a zombie at all, and is about to (or already has) marry his girlfriend.
Cast:

* John Archer as Richard Dennison
* Wanda McKay as Judy Malvern
* Tom Neal as Frankie Mills

Fun Facts [From Wikipedia]:
* In one scene, with two policemen talking outside a cinema, a movie poster outside the cinema entrance behind them advertises Bela Lugosi in The Corpse Vanishes, another Lugosi horror film also released in 1942.
* The very first broadcast of Late Night with David Letterman ended with Steve Fessler, a young comedian and performance artist from Brooklyn, reciting from memory all the dialogue from Bowery at Midnight onstage over the show's closing credits.
This film has fallen into the public domain and is being presented in a remastered and restored version for entertainment and historical purposes.

George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead (1968) The Original Zombie Horror Classic
George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead (1968)
A disparate group of individuals takes refuge in an abandoned house when corpses begin to leave the graveyard in search of fresh human bodies to devour. The pragmatic Ben does his best to control the situation, but when the reanimated bodies surround the house, the other survivors begin to panic. As any semblance of order within the group begins to dissipate, the zombies start to find ways inside - and one by one, the living humans become the prey of the deceased ones.
Directed, photographed, and edited by George A. Romero, written by Romero and John Russo, produced by Russell Streiner and Karl HArdman.
Cast:
* Duane Jones as Ben
* Judith O'Dea as Barbra
* Karl Hardman as Harry Cooper
* Marilyn Eastman as Helen Cooper
* Kyra Schon as Karen Cooper
* Keith Wayne as Tom
* Judith Ridley as Judy
* Bill Hinzman as the first ghoul
* George Kosana as Sheriff McClelland
* Bill "Chilly Billy" Cardille as himself
Night of the Living Dead premiered in Pittsburgh on October 1, 1968. It grossed $12 million domestically in the U.S. and $18 million internationally, earning more than 250 times its budget and making it one of the most profitable film productions ever made at that time.
The film's explicit violence and gore were considered groundbreaking, leading to five official sequels: Dawn of the Dead (1978), Day of the Dead (1985), Land of the Dead (2005), Diary of the Dead (2007) and Survival of the Dead (2010), as well as three remakes. Romero's debut set the template for countless zombie films and TV series that we've enjoyed in the decades since it's original release.
Night of the Living Dead was awarded two distinguished honors decades after its debut. The Library of Congress added the film to the National Film Registry in 1999 with other films deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant". In 2001, the film was ranked No. 93 by the American Film Institute on their AFI's 100 Years 100 Thrills list.
In the United States, Night of the Living Dead immediately fell into the public domain because the original distributor failed to replace the copyright notice when changing the film's name. Image Ten displayed a notice on the title frames of the film beneath the original title, "Night of the Flesh Eaters", but the Walter Reade Organization removed it when changing the title to "Night of the Living Dead".
George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead is presented here in it's original full version for entertainment and historical purposes.

Charade had it's initial debut in the U.S. on September 24, 1963, from Universal Pictures with a nationwide release in December. Because Universal and the filmmakers failed to properly display the copyright notice in the film as prescribed by the U.S. patent office (failed to use the "©" symbol before the date) before it's public release, it immediately entered into the public domain in the United States. However, while the film itself is in the public domain, the original music remains under copyright "if" it's outside of the context of the film.
Charade is being presented here for entertainment and historical purposes.

HIS GIRL FRIDAY (1940) Classic Comedy Starring Cary Grant & Rosalind Russell
HIS GIRL FRIDAY (1940) Starring Cary Grant, Rosilind Russell and featuring Ralph Bellamy & Gene Lockhart. This screwball comedy film was directed by Howard Hawks. It was released in the U.S. by Columbia Pictures on January 18, 1940.
The film centers on a newspaper editor named Walter Burns who is about to lose his ace reporter and ex-wife, Hildy Johnson, newly engaged to another man. Burns suggests they cover one more story together, getting themselves entangled in the case of murderer Earl Williams as Burns desperately tries to win back his wife.

The screenplay was adapted from the 1928 play The Front Page by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur. This was the second time the play had been adapted for the screen, the first occasion being the 1931 film which kept the original title The Front Page.
The 1988 film "Switching Channels" was loosely based on His Girl Friday, with Burt Reynolds in the Walter Burns role, Kathleen Turner in the Hildy Johnson role, and Christopher Reeve in the role of Bruce.
His Girl Friday is in the public domain because the copyright was not renewed; the play it was based on remained under copyright for several decades until it expired in 2024, fully releasing the film from remaining copyright. This film is being presented for entertainment and historical purposes.
