But the mass disqualification of moderate candidates and the crackdown on dissent has left many feeling their voices won't be heard. Especially young Iranians, who spend every day navigating restrictions imposed by their own government, as well as international sanctions.

Israel's Prime Minister has declared that there is no other solution but total victory over Hamas, which he believes is a matter of months away. It deals a blow to hopes of a ceasefire deal between the two sides. Hamas had proposed a four and a half month ceasefire, during which all hostages would be released in exchange for hundreds of Palestinians jailed by Israel. The group also wants a full withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza and a timetable for an end to the war.

The UN Secretary General has announced an investigation into UNRWA. Founded 75 years ago to aid refugees of the 1948 Palestine War, the organisation currently provides support for almost six million Palestinian refugees. But, in a dossier just six pages long, Israel has alleged that 12 of the agency's more than thirteen thousand staff in Gaza were involved in the 7th October attacks, leading nations including the UK and the US to withdraw their financial support.

The war with Russia is far from over but Ukraine received a boost from the European Union which has finally approved its 50 billion Euro aid package - providing Kyiv with economic and financial support in the long-term. Hungary's prime minister Viktor Orban was persuaded to drop his objections after a series of last-ditch meetings with European leaders - giving the deal the unanimous support it required. President Zelenskyy said the decision showed the EU's "strong unity".

The three US troops were killed by an unmanned drone at a small military outpost in Jordan near the Syrian border.

A convicted murderer on death row in Alabama is set to become the first American to be executed with nitrogen gas. Kenneth Eugene Smith's lawyers tried to appeal to the US Supreme Court - calling it a "cruel and unusual punishment". But justices declined to put a stop to it. Smith has already survived one botched execution in 2022. And tonight his lawyers have made a final, last ditch bid to halt this second attempt.

The former police firearms officer Rebecca Kalam has been awarded more than £820,000 in compensation - one of the biggest payouts of its kind - after she successfully sued West Midlands Police for sex discrimination, harrassment, and victimisation. Weather chaos: More than 1,000 UK homes flooded A cold weather alert is in force this weekend - with warnings that waterlogged roads could turn icy. According to the Environment agency - more than a thousand homes have been flooded after days of heavy rain. By six o'clock there were 247 flood warnings across the UK with another 267 flood alerts. Surging waters in the River Avon, the Severn and the Trent caused widespread disruption - and water levels along the Thames are still rising. Many train services in the southwest of England have been cancelled or diverted.

Rishi Sunak is facing more calls from his political opponents to call an election early this year. On his left flank, the Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey told a campaign rally in Guildford that the Prime Minister should stop "clinging on to power." From the right, the Leader of Reform UK Richard Tice claimed that Conservative MPs are "terrified" of his party and urged Rishi Sunak to call an election "as soon as possible".

Israel-Gaza: Half of Gaza’s population living in Rafah says UN In Gaza, the United Nations says it believes more than a million people are now living in the southern settlement of Rafah on the border with Egypt. That's almost half of Gaza's total population, who have been urged to flee from their homes towards the south, but not allowed to leave the enclave. At least 30 people have been killed and more than 140 others were injured after Russia launched a massive wave of missile and drone strikes across Ukraine in a barrage which lasted eighteen hours. The Ukrainian airforce said it had never seen so many locations targeted at the same time.

The US State Department has urged Congress to "act quickly" and approve new aid for Ukraine, after handing over 250 million dollars in military support - the last package it can give to Ukraine without further approval. President Zelenskyy said Ukraine would "always be grateful" for the continued support - as they battle to hold back Russian forces trying to advance in key areas along the front line. It's been another deadly day in Gaza. The Hamas-controlled health ministry says 195 Palestinians were killed in the last 24 hours. And Israel announced three more of its soldiers were killed in action, bringing the total to over 160 dead. Police said the gunman killed himself on the balcony of the university building as police closed in. Officers are also investigating whether the gunman - named locally as David Kozak - was also behind the death of a man and his baby daughter in a forest near the city last week.
