A Creepy Story for Children | A spooky short story for Halloween
#halloween, #shortstory, #creepystory, #spookystory
This is a ‘creepy’ short story that I wrote for children. It is one of the short stories included in my first book, ‘The First Prince.’
The book was published on Amazon last year, and I have been finishing the audiobook version. This is the audio for ‘Assassin!’ a short story about a gnomish assassin who plans the perfect murder. I don’t really know what age it is appropriate for, if your kids are terrified of the dark it may not be a good choice! Or maybe it is, who knows? I would suggest listening to a few minutes of it, and maybe listening to the end before you play it for any unsuspecting children.
My brother is the artist who drew the gnome and the cover for the book, you can find more of his art here:

Come Back With Your Shield... or on it. What does this mean?
#awarlikenoother, #pelopensianwar, #ancientsparta, #sparta, #hoplite
“Come back with your shield or on it.” This was the famous saying Spartan women were supposed to have said to their men before they left for battle. Was it mere bravado, or was there more utility to the saying?
And is there some wisdom in this we can apply today?

What made Achillies so dangerous? | Some thoughts on ancient warriors
#ancientgreece, #theiliad, #sparta, #spartan, #thucydides, #achilles
The period I am mostly discussing today is estimated around 1200 BC, with a quick reference to the Peloponnesian War (431-404 BC) and an honorable mention of the Napoleonic Wars,
I should have fleshed out the details on the ‘rank and file’ of the Iliad more, but what I was saying about landowners being the dominant soldiers in ancient Greece is consistent with what I have read. That did change during the Peloponnesian War, because Athens was trying to use their naval advantage over Sparta. If anyone is interested in that, I am happy to make a video about it.
This short film from Adorea Olomouc represents a later period than what I mostly discuss today, but 1) their choreography is unmatched, 2) a good example of what I am trying to communicate on both the potential advantage armor can provide and on the athleticism an armored warrior could express. It is a little slow to start but hang in there, if you are at all interested in what I discussed today it is worth watching.

The Two Ways of the Warrior | Culture and Conflict
#musashi, #miyamotomusashi, #bookoffiverings, #mindset, #theway
In The Book of Five Rings, Musashi tells his reader that The Two Ways of a Warrior are the ways of Culture and Conflict. Culture in his time was from a Confucian ideal that had a heavy emphasis on developing the intellect. This brief video discusses some of the ideas of developing the intellect, and developing physical skills.

A good book about Rome | I, Claudius
#claudius, #iclaudius, #ancientrome, #romanemperors
I, Claudius, is a fiction book written by Robert Graves and published in 1936. The book is written in the first person, so it is presented as if it were the memoires of Claudius, beginning when he is young, lasting through four different Emperors of Rome, and finally leading up to the events of how he became Emperor. It’s a great book, and if you are interested in Roman history I would recommend it.

What is Laconic Wit? | Lessons from Herodotus
#laconicwit, #sparta, #mindset, #herodotus, #thehistories
Laconic Wit comes from ancient Sparta, and the short, often humorous responses the Spartans are famous for. I go over two examples of this today, one from when delegates from Samos visited the Spartan Senate, and another well known quote from Dionekies, when informed that the Persian arrows would block out the sun at Thermopylae.
