NASA astronaut Frank Rubio and Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergei Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin gave farewell remarks ahead of hatch closure of the Roscosmos Soyuz MS-23 spacecraft on September 27. Following hatch closure, the spacecraft undocked from the International Space Station’s Prichal module, returning to Earth a few hours later for a parachute-assisted landing on the steppe of Kazakhstan. During his mission, Rubio broke the record for longest single spaceflight for a U.S. astronaut spending 371 consecutive days living and working aboard the microgravity laboratory to advance scientific knowledge and demonstrate new technologies for future human and robotic exploration missions as part of NASA’s Moon and Mars exploration approach, including lunar missions through NASA’s Artemis program. . On Sunday, Sept. 24, 2023, NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft safely delivered an estimated 8.8 ounces of rocky material collected from the surface of asteroid Bennu to Earth. The sample will be transported to NASA’s Johnson Space Center where it will be opened and studied. Mission experts recap the touchdown of OSIRIS-REx, which earlier today delivered America's first pristine sample of rocks and dust from an asteroid. NASA’s OSIRIS-REx sample return capsule, carrying a sample of asteroid Bennu, touched down on the Department of Defense’s Utah Test and Training Range at 10:52 a.m. EDT (14:52 UTC). After a seven-year journey to asteroid Bennu and back, the OSIRIS-REx sample return capsule landed in the Utah desert at the Utah Training and Testing Range on Sunday, September 24. Its journey did not end there. Bright and early Monday, September 25, the sample capsule hitched a ride in a C-17 aircraft to Houston. After landing at the Ellington airfield, the sample was driven to a facility at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. To successfully deliver a sample from the near-Earth asteroid Bennu, spacecraft operators need to ensure OSIRIS-REx travels at the right speed and direction to release the sample capsule into the atmosphere, landing it on the U.S. Department of Defense’s Utah Test and Training Range. Mission leadership will discuss the results of the spacecraft’s final trajectory maneuvers, and expectations for the capsule’s entry, descent, and landing, and plans for recovery operations in Utah’s western desert. NASA astronaut Frank Rubio will speak to media about his record-breaking mission aboard the International Space Station during an Earth-to-space call on Tuesday, Sept. 19. Rubio is scheduled to return to Earth on Wednesday, Sept. 27, after spending 371 days in low Earth orbit, earning him the record of the longest single spaceflight by an American. NASA astronaut Frank Rubio is set to return to Earth this fall after setting the record for the longest single spaceflight by a U.S. astronaut. He arrived at the International Space Station on Sept. 21, 2022, and will return home after 371 days in space. This media briefing is a discussion about the report published by the unidentified anomalous phenomena independent study team we commissioned in 2022. The team’s report aims to inform us on what possible data could be collected in the future to shed light on the nature and origin of UAPs. Right now, the limited high-quality observations of UAP make it impossible to draw scientific conclusions from the data about the nature of such events. Astronaut Loral O'Hara, a member of NASA's 2017 astronaut candidate class, is set to launch on her first mission to space Friday, Sept. 15. O'Hara and Roscosmos cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chub will lift off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan aboard the Soyuz MS-24 spacecraft. The Soyuz is scheduled to launch at 11:44 a.m. EDT (1544 UTC) Friday, Sept. 15. NASA TV coverage will begin at 10:45 a.m. After a two-orbit, three-hour journey, the Soyuz will dock to the International Space Station's Rassvet module at 2:56 p.m. (1856 UTC). O'Hara is scheduled to spend six months aboard the station while Kononenko and Chub are scheduled to spend a year on the orbital outpost. At the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, the Soyuz 2.1a rocket that will launch the Soyuz MS-24 crew to the International Space Station rolled out from its integration building to the launch pad Sept. 12 for final preparations. While the roll out took place, members of the Expedition 69-70 crew, Soyuz Commander Oleg Kononenko and Flight Engineer Nikolai Chub of Roscosmos and NASA Flight Engineer Loral O’ Hara and their backups, Alexey Ovchinin of Roscosmos and Tracy C.
