Enterprise Wednesday #54 - Extinction - Star Trek Enterprise Commentary & Review
Qapla' All... Today we continue the adventure... It will be a long road... We'll watch Star Trek Enterprise (officially named now) season 3, episode 3, Extinction. Watch as Captain Archer and crew become Earth's first Warp 5 starship crew to boldly go where no man has gone before!
Enterprise S03E03 Wikipedia -
"Extinction" is the 55th episode of the American science fiction television series Star Trek: Enterprise, the third episode of season three. It first aired on September 24, 2003 on the UPN network in the United States. This was the first episode to include the prefix "Star Trek" in the title of the series. Set in the 22nd century just prior to the formation of the United Federation of Planets, the series follows the adventures of Starfleet's first Warp 5 starship, Enterprise, registration NX-01.
Season three of Enterprise features an ongoing story following an attack on Earth by a previously unknown alien race called the Xindi. In this episode, while investigating a planet visited by the Xindi, several crew members, including Captain Jonathan Archer, become infected with a virus that mutates them into another species. While they develop a cure, the Enterprise crew must prevent an alien race from exterminating the mutated crew members. The episode was written by story editor André Bormanis and directed by Star Trek: The Next Generation alumnus LeVar Burton.
"Extinction" was shot across seven days, with the soundstage transformed into an alien jungle for filming. John Eaves designed a Xindi pod, as well as an alien spaceship which he strongly disliked. Jolene Blalock, Scott Bakula, Linda Park and Dominic Keating were each required to undergo extended make-up sessions during six days of the shoot in order to show their characters in various states of mutation. Around four million viewers watched "Extinction" on first broadcast, but the critical reception was mixed. Although the actors who underwent additional make-up were praised, the plot was found to be similar to previous episodes in the franchise and the ending was considered poor.
On Enterprise, Sub-Commander T'Pol is called to the command center by Captain Archer. Archer tells her that he has located a nearby planet that the Xindi recently visited. Both then travel down to the surface with Lieutenant Reed and Ensign Sato. They discover a Xindi shuttle along with two dead crewmembers, one of whom has been incinerated. With little warning, Archer, Sato and Reed begin to transform physically and mentally into a different species. Within seconds they are fully changed. T'Pol, however, is only mildly affected physically, appearing somehow resistant.
After a physical altercation with her newly transformed crewmates, T'Pol is able to communicate with Archer by gaining use of the universal translator. She learns they have been overcome with an overwhelming instinct to reach a city called "Urquat", the homeland of their species. Meanwhile, Commander Tucker and an away team of MACOs, equipped with biohazard suits, manage to capture and return Reed to the ship. Archer and Sato flee and T'Pol opts to stay with them. Doctor Phlox soon determines that they were infected by a mutagenic virus, and concludes that T'Pol's Vulcan genetics rendered her partially immune.
Two "containment ships" soon arrive, demanding access to Enterprise in order to stop the virus that killed millions of their people 60 years earlier. Tucker refuses, but invites their leader, Tret, aboard. Tret explains that the original inhabitants of the planet, the Loque'eque, created the virus in a last ditch effort to continue their species. Believing it impossible to cure, he sends a team to the planet's surface to neutralize Archer and Sato. Archer leads Sato and T'Pol to Urquat, but they find it in ruins. Tucker beams down with a team of MACOs and rescues them. Enterprise warps away, but the alien ships pursue and attack the ship. Tucker asks Tret to allow Phlox more time to synthesize an antidote with T'pol's genes, but Tret refuses. Before he can board the ship, Phlox arrives with Archer and Sato—now mostly restored—and promises Tret a sample. Later, as Phlox plans to destroy the last vial of the virus, Archer tells him to keep it as the last remnant of the near-extinct species.

Enterprise Wednesday #48 - Regeneration - Star Trek Enterprise Commentary & Review
Qapla' All... Today we continue the adventure... It will be a long road... But we'll watch Enterprise (not yet called Star Trek Enterprise mind you) season 2, episode 23, Regeneration. Watch as Captain Archer and crew become Earth's first Warp 5 starship crew to boldly go where no man has gone before!
Enterprise S02E23 Wikipedia -
"Regeneration" is the forty-ninth episode of the American science fiction television series Star Trek: Enterprise, the twenty-third episode of the second season. It first aired on May 7, 2003, on the UPN in the United States. The episode was written by Mike Sussman and Phyllis Strong, and was directed by David Livingston. It was a follow-up to the feature film Star Trek: First Contact.
Set in the 22nd century, the series follows the adventures of the first Starfleet starship Enterprise, registration NX-01. In this episode, a research team in the Arctic inadvertently triggers the reanimation of several cybernetically enhanced aliens, killed in apparent spacecraft crash over a hundred years earlier. The aliens assimilate the researchers before escaping into space. The Enterprise pursues the ship and is attacked, forcing Archer to destroy the vessel. Afterwards they discover that the aliens sent a message into the Delta Quadrant containing the coordinates of Earth, a message that will not arrive until the 24th century.
The episode used props and costumes from previous Star Trek series in order to represent the Borg. The guest cast included Bonita Friedericy, the wife of main cast member John Billingsley. The ratings received by the episode were similar to those received during the previous week, and the number of viewers were one of the highest for the year. The critical response to "Regeneration" was mixed, with concerns directed at potential continuity problems, and that the appearance of the Borg was a little obvious. A follow-up episode to "Regeneration" was pitched for the fifth season of Star Trek: Enterprise but the show was cancelled at the end of the fourth season.
A team of researchers discover remains of a crashed spaceship in the Arctic Circle, finding two humanoids with cybernetic implants frozen in the wreckage. The bodies are taken to a nearby compound to be studied. The scientists marvel at the nanoprobes that begin to repair the long dead aliens. One of the seemingly dead subjects attacks the scientists, assimilating them. Using scavenged parts from the wreckage of the Borg ship to enhance the transport, they escape into space, upgrading it with a faster warp drive and weapons.
Admiral Forrest orders Enterprise to rescue the "kidnapped" researchers. They soon receive a distress call from a Tarkalean freighter, and they arrive to discover the ship under attack from the enhanced transport. Captain Jonathan Archer tries to disable their weapons, but the ship jumps to warp speed. Archer brings the survivors to Sickbay, and finds their situation reminiscent of a Zefram Cochrane story he remembers (relating to first contact). The assimilated crew soon awaken, and in the ensuing melee Doctor Phlox is infected with nanoprobes. They escape, and Lieutenant Reed then finds them modifying ship's systems, and learns that the Enterprise's phase pistols are ineffective against them. Archer, left with no other options, orders the section to be de-pressurized. Reed then begins upgrading the pistols, while Phlox treats himself with "omicron radiation" to destroy the nanoprobes.
Enterprise again catches up with the transport, but the recent modifications suddenly activate and shut down weapons and propulsion. Soon after the aliens hail Enterprise and demand that they surrender, noting that "resistance is futile". In response, Archer and Reed board the ship with upgraded pistols, plant explosives, and beam out. Commander Tucker troubleshoots the alien modifications thereby restoring main power to Enterprise. With the transport crippled, Archer realizes the altered crew members are too far gone and orders the transport's destruction. Later, a recovering Phlox informs Archer that while infected he kept hearing a repeating numerical sequence - Earth's coordinates sent somewhere into the Delta Quadrant. Sub-Commander T'Pol states it would take almost 200 years to reach its destination, but Archer remains troubled, concerned that they might only have postponed the eventual invasion.

Enterprise Wednesday #46 - The Breach - Star Trek Enterprise Commentary & Review
Qapla' All... Today we continue the adventure... It will be a long road... But we'll watch Enterprise (not yet called Star Trek Enterprise mind you) season 2, episode 21, The Breach. Watch as Captain Archer and crew become Earth's first Warp 5 starship crew to boldly go where no man has gone before!
Enterprise S02E21 Wikipedia -
"The Breach" is the twenty-first episode of the second season and forty-seventh episode of the television series Star Trek: Enterprise. It originally aired on April 23, 2003, on UPN. This episode was written by Chris Black and John Shiban from a story by Daniel McCarthy; Robert Duncan McNeill directs. Guest stars include Henry Stram, Mark Chaet, Laura Putney, D.C. Douglas and Jamison Yang alongside the main cast of the show.
In the 22nd century, starship Enterprise is asked to evacuate three Denobulan geologists from a planet after its controlling government is taken over by a militant faction.
At the request of the Denobulan Science Academy, Enterprise goes to extract a group of three geologists from a planet where xenophobic militants have taken charge and decreed that all off-worlders must evacuate. Being experienced with caving, Ensign Mayweather is chosen to lead Commander Tucker and Lieutenant Reed on the underground rescue mission. They have only three days to return to the surface with the scientists before the negotiated government ceasefire expires.
As the Enterprise nears the planet, it comes to the aid of an alien evacuee transport, suffering from a dangerous radiation leak. The most seriously injured of the various aliens brought aboard is Hudak, an Antaran, whose species has a centuries long history of conflict and animosity with the Denobulans. Though suffering from a fatal case of radiation poisoning, and being the first time the two species have interacted in generations, he immediately refuses help from Doctor Phlox. Archer orders Phlox to treat him, but he reluctantly declines, since Denobulan medical ethics places the patient's wishes above all other considerations.
Underground, the crew make good progress, but Mayweather injures his leg. Leaving him behind, Reed and Tucker soon locate the Denobulan geologists, who are happily engaged in recording the various rare and precious geological features of the cavern. With time running out, Tucker is insistent the group departs, while the scientists downplay the level of the threat, but finally assent. Back on the ship, using tact and diplomacy of his own, Phlox endeavors to help Hudak, but his initial attempts end in failure. Phlox, for his part, is also upset at the mutual hatred between the two species - but since Hudak refuses to be treated, Phlox must wait. Eventually, Hudak reflects on Phlox's words and agrees to the lifesaving procedure. An agreement is then reached in which the three Denobulans are granted passage home aboard the same transport as Hudak.

Enterprise Wednesday #44 - Judgement - Star Trek Enterprise Commentary & Review
Qapla' All... Today we continue the adventure... It will be a long road... But we'll watch Enterprise (not yet called Star Trek Enterprise mind you) season 2, episode 19, Judgement. Watch as Captain Archer and crew become Earth's first Warp 5 starship crew to boldly go where no man has gone before!
Enterprise S02E19 Wikipedia -
"Judgment" is the nineteenth episode of the second season of Star Trek: Enterprise, the forty-fifth episode overall. It first aired April 9, 2003, on UPN.
Captain Archer appears before a Klingon tribunal, charged with attacking a Klingon space ship and inciting a rebellion.
This episode guest stars J. G. Hertzler as a Klingon lawyer. Bakula picked this episode as a favorite of his.
Captain Archer finds himself in the witness stand of a Klingon tribunal where he's charged with both aiding rebels opposed to the Empire and of attacking a Klingon ship. In his cell, under the pretext of needing to be checked for contagion, Archer is visited by Doctor Phlox, who gives Archer an update that efforts to have him released are under way. Archer tells Phlox to relay a message, that no matter what the outcome, Sub-Commander T'Pol will leave orbit and keep the Enterprise's crew safe. In the chamber, the prosecutor, Orak, faces off against Archer's advocate, a veteran of the courts named Kolos.
Orak calls as his first witness Second Weapons Officer (formerly Captain) Duras to testify—a process in which Archer is not allowed to interject. Duras then relates a biased tale of himself confronting a belligerent Archer, who supposedly fires on the Klingon ship first. Archer cannot hold his tongue, and is quickly silenced with pain sticks by the tribunal guards. Back in the cells, Kolos is tasked with offering Archer a deal. Rather than plea bargain, Archer insists that Kolos actually work harder to put up a valid defense. In response, Kolos relates how the judiciary used to be about the law and honor, but more recently the warrior mindset meant that victories became the accepted norm.
Kolos re-enters the court and advocates for Archer's right to testify based on an archaic judicial charter. Archer is permitted to relate his tale of helping the neglected refugees and merely damaging the Klingon warship, giving Kolos the chance to relate the numerous times Archer has helped the Empire in the past. Archer is still found guilty and sentenced to life on the Klingon dilithium mining planet of Rura Penthe. Kolos protests, and is himself sentenced to a year at Rura Penthe. Meanwhile, T'Pol uses irregular back-door diplomatic channels and bribes to arrange to get the captain back. Kolos remains, deciding to obey the law he has served for so long with honor.

Enterprise Wednesday #45 - Horizon - Star Trek Enterprise Commentary & Review
Qapla' All... Today we continue the adventure... It will be a long road... But we'll watch Enterprise (not yet called Star Trek Enterprise mind you) season 2, episode 20, Horizon. Watch as Captain Archer and crew become Earth's first Warp 5 starship crew to boldly go where no man has gone before!
Enterprise S02E20 Wikipedia -
"Horizon" is the twentieth episode of the second season of the science fiction television series Star Trek: Enterprise, and originally aired on April 16, 2003, on UPN. The episode was written by André Bormanis and directed by James A. Contner. The episode's guest stars included Nicole Forester, who had previously appeared in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine; Joan Pringle; and Corey Mendell Parker.
Set in the 22nd century, the series follows the adventures of the first Starfleet starship Enterprise, registration NX-01. When the ship detours to observe volcanic activity on a planet, Ensign Mayweather (Anthony Montgomery) takes the opportunity to visit his family on board the E.C.S. Horizon.
Montgomery had previously suggested the appearance of Mayweather's parents at the end of season one, and was pleased to see them introduced. Several sets to create the Horizon were created on a soundstage, with the related scenes filmed in the second half of the episode's shoot after the main cast were dismissed, with the exception of Montgomery. Critical response was mixed, and the episode received the lowest ratings for a first-run episode of the series so far, viewed by 3.36 million viewers.
At the direction of Starfleet, Enterprise makes a detour to a planet passing between two gas giants in order to observe the gravitational forces and subsequent volcanic activity. Their new course takes the ship close to that of E.C.S. Horizon, the cargo vessel on which Ensign Mayweather grew up. He requests permission for a further detour to rejoin his family on Horizon, as his father is ill and he hasn't been able to visit him in four years. Captain Archer readily agrees, but bad news arrives when Mayweather learns that his father died some six weeks earlier.
As planned, Mayweather boards Horizon and receives a warm welcome from most of the crew, including his mother Rianna. He finds that his brother, Paul, has been named acting captain, but he doesn't seem to be coping well with his new responsibilities. Mayweather offers to make a few repairs and upgrades to systems on the ship, but Paul tells him to stop, making him feel uneasy and out of place. Soon afterward the ship comes under attack, and a homing device is placed on the hull. Mayweather then recommends a boost in the ship's fighting capability, but Paul insists that the safest course is to flee to the nearest port and yield the cargo as needed.
Back on Enterprise, Commander Tucker arranges a movie night for the crew featuring the Frankenstein film trilogy, and invites Sub-Commander T'Pol. She eventually consents, and finally finds in the film an insightful view into historical human-Vulcan relations. Meanwhile, Mayweather makes his intended modifications without permission, resulting in a confrontation when Paul finds out. The ship comes under further attack from an alien vessel, and Paul offers up the cargo as planned. The aliens refuse and demand the vessel as well. Left without any other option, Paul tells Mayweather to reinitiate the modifications and to detach the command module from the cargo section. They soon disable the alien ship. The brothers reconcile and Mayweather leaves, promising to visit again soon.

Star Trek Strange New Worlds Season 2 Episode 2 Reaction / Review - Ad Astra per Aspera
Commander Una Chin-Riley faces court-martial along with possible imprisonment and dishonorable dismissal from Starfleet, and her defense is in the hands of a lawyer who’s also a childhood friend with whom she had a terrible falling out.
SNW S02E02 Memory Alpha Teaser Summary:
Una thinks back to an injury that occurred during her childhood, her parents worried that her Illyrian genetics would be discovered if they went to a hospital. In the present, she is seated across from Captain Batel, who tells her Starfleet is willing to offer a deal: If Una pleads guilty, she will be granted a dishonorable discharge, with no prison time. Una notes the "dishonorable" part, but Batel assures her that it would not result in her exile; she would be a free citizen of the Federation, and Starfleet would seal her records. She considers it a "good deal" given the evidence, and Una's defender from the Judge Advocate General's office agrees. Una elects to "sidebar" that particular conversation, and Batel gets up to leave and allow Una to speak with her counsel. Una pointedly asks how she can get proper counsel when her defender works for Batel.
Meanwhile, Captain Pike has traveled to a world in the Vaultera Nebula seeking legal aid for Una; the planet's atmosphere is not suitable for Humans, and so he is forced to wear a breathing mask. He seats himself in the office of Counselor Neera Katoul, whose secretary speaks with her boss about Pike still being there. Afterwards, the secretary turns and tells Pike that the counselor could not see him today, as she was completely booked. Pike replies he can wait. However, his oxygen supply is at two percent, and begins beeping with an alarm; the secretary takes this as evidence that Pike actually can't wait. "Try me," is his response, as the oxygen runs out entirely. The secretary scrambles to get Pike his meeting.
Katoul adjusts the atmosphere in her office for Pike. He knows that she and her people were Illyrians, and Katoul had thought this fact would grant a measure of privacy. Katoul had known it was only a matter of time before Una was outed, and that Starfleet would never allow an Illyrian to serve openly, but that was not her problem. Pike isn't sure what happened between the two of them, but points out Una is her friend; Katoul replies that Una is not her friend, and neither is Pike. Pike knows this is because of her opposition to the Federation's policy. He admits that Starfleet (and he himself) was wrong about Illyrians, explaining about the mission to the abandoned Illyrian colony on Hetemit IX, which wasn't so abandoned. There, he discovered what happens to Illyrians trying to reverse their genetic modifications so that the Federation would accept them. Katoul sarcastically congratulates him for discovering empathy, and asks him to let her know when the rest of the Federation caught up. Pike reminds her that Starfleet wanted to dismiss Una from the service. Katoul thinks dishonorable discharge was "getting off easy"; given Starfleet's "draconian" race laws, she should be glad she was not being charged with sedition. Pike is surprised, as the proceedings were sealed, but Katoul has her ways of getting to the truth to save her clients' lives.
...
Una and Katoul are waiting in Admiral Javas' office for the prosecution to arrive. A moment later, Batel enters, accompanied by Vice Admiral Pasalk. Batel informs Javas that the charges are being amended: in addition to falsifying her records and violating Starfleet's code against genetic modification, Una was now being charged with two counts of sedition, with the recommended penalty being dishonorable dismissal and twenty years imprisonment in a Federation penal colony.

Strange New Worlds S2E1 - How to FIX The Broken Circle... 5 Fixes for better Star Trek!
Qapla' all... Rather than nitpicking this latest episode of Star Trek Strange New Worlds, Season 2, Episode 1, The Broken Circle, I decided to layout how I could fix it instead. Listen as I point out 5 of my biggest problems and how they could have fixed to make this bitter disappointment into a perfectly average episode of Trek.
A distress call from Lt. Noonien-Singh compels Spock to disobey orders and take the USS Enterprise and its crew into disputed space, risking renewed hostilities with the Klingons in a bid to aid their shipmate. (Season Premiere)
"Captain's log, stardate 2369.2. Enterprise is in spacedock at Starbase 1. The crew is taking some well-deserved leave while Chief Fleet Inspector Commander Pelia and her team from Operational Support Services are running comprehensive inspections, systems checks and upgrades. I've had my hands full on Enterprise getting everything ready. But even from afar, I sense a tension here among the brass that I can't pin down. The feeling that something is in the air. But right now I have a crisis closer to home to deal with."
Memory Alpha Summary:
While the USS Enterprise is undergoing routine maintenance and inspection at Starbase 1, Captain Pike speaks with Una, who is in custody following the revelation that she is Illyrian, in violation of Starfleet's regulations about genetic engineering. They have both attempted to reach out to someone they know who could help Una's case, but have been ignored. Pike suggests going public, as they couldn't ignore her service record, but Una refuses to allow Pike to be brought down for her mistake. Una thinks she will able to get a plea deal, but Pike is adamant that she cannot resign, considering the loss to the Enterprise, and to him personally, to be "unimaginable". Una reminds him that he had taught her not to start a fight she couldn't win, but Pike retorts that she didn't start the fight, and they would find a way to win it because it was what was right. He intends to reach out to their contact, which would involve a trip of three days to the other side of the quadrant (two-and-a-half in one of the newer shuttles, Pike adds) that might just result in having a door slammed in his face. Una thinks Pike is being ridiculous, but if it was Una's only chance to fight the charges, he was determined to try.
