Is Intonation on a Bass Guitar important?
I had someone make a comment on my channel, and I thought that a series of Q&A responses might be in order.

Moments Frozen in Time with Bassist Tim Starace of YYNOT
I have never interviewed anyone on camera before, and much less a popular bassist known as “The Guy” that can play any Rush song well, but be known as the most accurate one doing it.
I usually cringe at videos of anyone covering Rush songs on bass because so many gave the effort insufficient dedication to do it correctly.
I literally stumbled onto Tim's videos because I was looking for other Rickenbacker bass players to see how they took care of their basses from a maintenance standpoint. Tim Starace recorded several videos of him playing along with Rush songs, and I was dumbstruck. I then discovered he is a member of a killer Rush tribute band that also releases their own original material on two distinct CDs at the time of this interview.
To purchase their work, go to:
https://www.amazon.com/Yynot/dp/B07D582J72/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=yynot&qid=1563148491&s=gateway&sr=8-1
I thought, “Now there is a person that might have a story to tell”. Indeed, the story of his career has been told comprehensively across several interviews he has done in the past. But I was primarily curious as to what it was like for him as a beginning bass player. We all started at some point and had to face numerous challenges in order to either continue on the journey before us, or give up in frustration for a variety of reasons. I wanted to know that side of Tim's story.
I reached out to him on FaceBook, and was stunned that he thought it was a good idea that a fledgling content creator on YouTube would interview him. I panicked because I had no idea what I got myself into.
In this video, it is quite obvious that a few things were going on.
We were all exhausted after a long night, but Tim was so wonderfully positive and upbeat.
I was really worried about wasting his time, or keeping him from something else more important at that time like tearing down and heading home, so when he seemed to be done at the half way point, I tried to let him off the hook by taking the mike back from him to thank him, but he was not about to do that at all. I guess he was just getting comfortable, and I didn't was to interfere.
I was nervous as all get, but he seemed relaxed after a minute or two, so I breathed a sigh of relief and stuck with it.
Special thanks to my wife Sharron Cruz, who was gathering the B roll footage with one hand, and lit us up with a hand held LED flood light in her other hand.
Special thanks to my daughter Terra Cruz for gathering the main video during the precious moments we had with Tim.
And of course, a massive amount of gratitude for how kindly and positive Joel, Billy and Rocky treated us whenever we interacted with them before and after their show.
BAND BIO:
YYNOT ®was the coming together of award winning-Grammy ballot nominated Guitarist/Songwriter/Producer Billy Alexander (John Waite, FEEL, Ron Blair-Tom Petty) and Florida based virtuoso, bassist Tim Starace. Alexander saw Bassist Tim Starace post videos of his mind-blowing and accurate bass covers. So Starace and Alexander started collaborating from opposite coasts to create online videos.Their videos gaining over 2 million views overall on Facebook and YouTube.
Alexander recruited then 19 year old Rocky Kuner after seeing her perform a jaw-dropping version of Deep Purple’s “Highway Star” while she was still in highschool!
Drummer Joel Stevenett came into the fold having come from an extensive national touring and session career.
YYNOT’s live shows are designed to take the fans on a journey back in time as well as deliver a fresh new spark and bring back the power and majesty of hard rock that the fans have an undeniable hunger for.

Instruental of "Carry On wayward Son"
I got a hold of the isolated track of Phil Ehart and Hammond B-3 Organ track, and decided to just play my newly refinished short scale bass to it, to see how close I could get to the feel and sound of this pivotal song in my life.

TRIBUTE TO NEIL PEART
I'm not a drummer, but I am awestruck when I see and hear a good one do his or her craft. There was one though in 1980, that had an enormous, life changing impact on my life in so many positive ways, that his creative contributions before and since inspired me to begin my own journey into being a musician in my own little way.
Fast forward to 2012. An associate of mine went to New York to video Neil, who was practicing alone for the up and coming "Clockwork Angels Tour" ahead of joining Alex and Geddy a few weeks later. Neil was also promoting his books along with showcasing the new signature "Paragon" cymbals he endorsed. https://sabian.com/article/the-story-of-paragon/
What was remarkable is that I was in desperate need of work when the product line video was made, and I was asked to post produce the audio for this video on the song "Subdivisions". I have had jaw-dropping good fortune land on me through my life, but this one was simply unbelievable. The sad thing is that in the end, my careful mix of all his individual drums ended up not being used because it's essentially an isolated drum track of that song that did not suit the energy of the finished video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmbGhoJfYLM
That was the bad thing.
The good thing is that I was allowed to keep all the raw video and individual drum tracks for this song, and for the song "Where's my Thing". As a tribute to Neil in the only way I can, I went ahead and performed the rest of "Subdivisions" by myself over here, just to see how close I could to what I thought the other varied instruments were doing in this song.
I shot several videos of me trying to track along with the isolated drum mix as best I could, not being particularly good at playing the bass, guitar and keyboards at the skill level of many other talented musicians out there.
There are many songs from this band that touched me in my 54 years, but "Subdivisions" is truly the soundtrack of my life.

Bass Effect Pedals. How to avoid wasting your money!
Friends, I have learned things as a musician the hard way, and I wish I didn't. I could have used some practical wisdom when I got started and just simply missed out on some much needed guidance, with the end result being that I was repeatedly wasted so much of my time and money.
That's the past, and you don't have to make the same costly mistakes that I did.
All of this is my personal reference material from years of experience both good and bad on this topic. It is my sincerest hope that no matter where you are in life, no matter what age you decide to embark on this fantastic journey, that you will find all of this useful in some way.

Bass Guitar Recommendations Part 3.
The intro drum and bass to this video is an homage to Glen Cato Mollen of Circus Maximu's song "Reach Within". Performed by me on my Rickenbacker 4001 and an Alesis SR-16.
CORRECTION: Although Tobias guitars were acquired by Gibson in 1990, Michael Tobias left the Gibson company in 1992 to found Michael Tobias Design, which produces a line of hand-made basses similar in spirit to the older Tobias basses.

5 "Must Have" bass guitar accessories. Part 03.
This is the third part in a series about what I consider to be “must have” items at the ready as a starting bass player. None of the items I talked about are depicted in a best to worst items, but instead shown to you as random options, based on a lot of personal, hands on experience that I have had with all of it in the last 30 years.
All of this is my unofficial reference material from years of experience both good and bad on this topic. it is my sincerest hope that no matter where you are in life, no matter what age you decide to embark on this fantastic journey, that you will find all of this useful in some way.

5 "Must Have" bass guitar accessories. Part 02.
Oh, my. Episode 0006, the previous one, is what happens when I say to myself that I'm going to be fast with my explanations, only to realize in post edit that there was more to share than I originally thought.
Let me know if you would prefer the comprehensive approach, or just the scant and nebulous surface stuff. I have a lot to share, but I also don't want to tie you down for too long.
What do you think?
