US Space & Rocket Center Campground - Wake Up Rested & Ready to Blast Off! Huntsville Alabama
There are concerns. You think you want to stay here but make sure. Watch for views of every campsite, the bathrooms, and learn all about the Huntsville Alabama area US Space and Rocket Center RV park. This is one of those campgrounds where you really want to stay here, but you’re so happy you watched a video to know which site would be best for your rig. We look forward to sharing with you the prices, features, pros and cons of staying here. Let’s get started!
Pricing for the park is very reasonable compared to commercially run campgrounds. The price for pull through and back in sites are very affordable in the $30 per night range. Pull through sites can accommodate up to 45’ long RVs and back ins are limited to 40 feet. Although some sites are smaller. Check in is 3pm and check out is at noon. If you arrive early you can see if your site is available early or you can park at the museum lot to wait for your site.

The campground has full hookup at all sites including water, sewer, and electric. The electricity is available in 30 amp and 20 amp outlets. Each site has an asphalt pad, charcoal grill, and picnic table. The campground is hilly however, most sites are level. If you need a level site make sure to call the campground and confirm site details with them.
The entrance is flat and leads to the campground office. You’ll experience that the road surface needs to be repaired. The conditions inside the park don’t get much better. After the campground office the drive descends and turns left. Long rigs will probably feel uncomfortable making this drive. You’ll notice here that there is significant erosion and the asphalt is breaking down and close to its useful life. The pull through sites are long however, and some did accommodate rigs longer than ours. We fit well in our back-in site with our 35’ class A and full size truck and we are thankful that our site entrance was flat and easy to get into.
We were happy with the bathrooms. Make sure you remember the code from check in to get into them. I had to ask another camper for the code the first time I visited. The bathrooms are located at the campground office.. The yellow colored stalls, rust colored flooring, and ceramic tile are clean and the high ceilings offer a sense of space. The showers, sinks, and toilets all work well and are in good condition. Laundry is also available.
One of the best features of the campground is its location near the museum. With our back-in site we had to unhook the truck to park. When we were ready to leave we drove the RV and truck over to the museum parking lot and hooked up there while waiting for the museum to open. The parking lot provided for all the space and time we needed to hook up. When we were done touring the museum we pulled out in a few minutes and were on our way. The close proximity provided a care-free morning and we were inside the museum when they opened.
The day we took the video was wet and the campground was not in its best condition. I expect sunnier days would offer a much better experience. We were impressed by the amount of lawn available throughout the park and especially at the entrance. There is plenty of room to walk dogs, play soccer, or other sports and spread out. Up by the entrance we noticed people did not pick up after their dogs, even though dog waste bags are available in the campground. There are many areas in the campground with full sun. The trees in the park are large and offer a lot of shade. They provide a forest feel and really help you escape from the urban environment and museum campus.
Unique to the campground is a rocket launching site adjacent to the RV park. If you are lucky you may see some launches as part of the space camp program from your RV. The campground and on-site hotel were built to provide lodging for space camp families needing a place to stay. The park is within walking distance of Space Camp and the museum. New in 2023 is the upgraded space camp experience with a brand new 40,000 sq foot Operations Center building. Have you ever wanted to be an astronaut or attend space camp? Did you know in addition to the grade school program they also have camp for adults?

Exploring Huntsville's US 🇺🇸 Space & Rocket 🚀 Center for an Unforgettable Journey to the Stars!🤩
Do you know Huntsville Alabama is home to the United States foundation for Rocket science, technology and engineering? We’ll talk about that and more as we share with you the US Space and Rocket Center Museum in Huntsville Alabama. Let’s get Started!
Everything the United States knows about Rocket science was developed and improved here in Huntsville at the Redstone Arsenal and now the Marshall Space Flight Center. Did you know Mission Control for the International Space Station is here in Huntsville? The story of how we made it from World War II to the Saturn V is legendary. Wernher Von Braun, a German Rocket Engineer was pulled out of Europe along with other engineers critical to the Hitler’s Rocket Program by the Americans.
The US Space & Rocket Center is located in Huntsville Alabama about 20 minutes East of I-65. This is a great stop for Spring Breakers as it’s about 400 miles North of the Gulf of Mexico.

A bicycle is on display which was used by one of the engineers to meet with US Soldiers about the strategy. Along with the rocket engineers our Soldiers took fully functional V2 rockets back to America. One of the V-2 Rockets is in the museum next to Von Braun’s office exhibit. Huntsville Alabama is home to the Redstone Arsenal and Modern day Rocket Technology. Von Braun led the development of rocket science in the United States with a collaboration of the German immigrants and Americans.
In this area of the Davidson Center for Rocket Exploration there are models of the mercury capsule. The Mercury program sent the first man into space and the capsule was big enough for one person. You’ll remember astronaut names like Shepard, Grissom and Glenn. Close by is the Gemini capsule where two astronauts went to space.
The Apollo capsule is located next to the airstream trailer the astronauts used to prevent sickness in space.
You can find this hands-on experience along the windows under the big circle. This exhibit discusses the guidance system of the Saturn V and shares how they designed and conquered how to drive and steer in space using some of the very first computer technology.
The water tank from the Skylab fell to the earth in 1979. But it survived and was found in Australia with other debris after losing orbit.
Next to the shuttle mockup is a narrative of the Manned Maneuvering Unit. The unit on display was used in space and is part of a broader education on the STS-41-B mission here at the Rocket Center.
The Apollo 16 Command module is on display at the end of the museum. This capsule successfully protected John Young, Ken Mattingly and Charles Duke on their mission to the moon and back to Earth.
Outside walking around the rocket park explore the Saturn 1 Rocket and take a ride on the G Force Accelerator. To the west you can stand next to the Space Shuttle with boosters and fuel tank. Also outside at the entrance you will discover the A-12 Oxcart supersonic spy aircraft. Similar in design to the SR-71 Blackbird but could fly faster and higher.
You can look forward to installations of Space X, the Atlas program, and Blue Origin all in front and towering above us. This exhibit is the next chapter in the space program. Here the story of the next mission to the moon and Mars is detailed with NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) as the tallest model in the room. Other pieces include Blue Origin, Spacesuits, and the lunar lander. In the middle of the room is the Boeing CST-100.
From Jeff Bezos you can see the first person to enter space on a Blue Origin spacecraft. Mannequin Skywalker went on the first “manned” mission of blue origin.
The SLS is the strongest rocket ever and is able to send Orion, astronauts and cargo to the moon.
The shuttle experience is a coveted backstage tour of the space station, lunar lander, space port, shuttle simulator and mission control.
