Basil: A Common Herb with a Legendary Secret/ Legend and Lore, Cultivation and Culinary
Basil grows in abundance in several variations and in multiple garden beds throughout the Pixies Potager. It has been one of our favorite summer herbs as it is both delicious and fragrant and is used in so much of our cooking. However, after doing a bit of research we realized that Basil had a questionable past that we knew nothing about!
This video is about the legends, lore and downright rumors which historically swirled around the innocent basil plant and also the benefits and how to grow the herb properly... and without cursing!
We’ve also shared a few delicious recipes involving basil that will likely leave you seeking out a few homeless basil plants to adopt and tucking them in garden pots throughout your own space.
The recipes for Basil Pesto, Blueberry basil Vinegar, Blueberry Stilton Vinaigrette and peach and Basil Simple Syrup, can be found below.
Thank you for watching and please consider subscribing and liking our channel as it helps us continue to grow.
Basil Pesto
2 C. Fresh Basil
2 garlic cloves peeled
½ C. Roasted Walnuts, Pine nuts, or pecans
½ C. Fresh grated Parmesan
¼ C. Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil
½ tsp. sea salt
Place the basil and garlic in a food processor and pulse until roughly chopped. Add the walnuts and pulse until they are chopped and combined with the herbs. Add Parmesan and salt. Set to process on low and drizzle in the olive oil through the feed on top of the processors lid. Scrape down the sides, taste for seasoning, place in a bowl and cover with plastic pressed down onto the mixture. Refrigerate until you are ready to use.
Quick Blueberry Basil Vinegar
2 C. fresh blueberries
1 C. Fresh Basil
1C. Organic red wine vinegar
Place all the ingredients in the pitcher of your blender and whir on low speed until roughly chopped. Pour mixture into a jar and let sit in your refrigerator until you are ready to use it. When ready, strain through a fine sieve or cheese cloth and use it in your vinaigrette.
Peach Basil Simple Syrup
The skins of 6 organic peaches
1 C. Fresh Basil
2 C. Water
2 C. Organic sugar
With a paring knife peel the skins off of peaches and set the peaches aside to be used in some other delicious creation of your choosing.
Gather all the peelings and place in a saucepan with the remainder of the ingredients. Stir the mixture periodically as it comes to a simmer. Simmer for 10 minutes and then remove from heat and let in steep for at least ½ hour.
Once the liquid mixture has cooled, strain it through a fine sieve or cheese cloth and store in a glass jar in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it to make lemonade or add it to sparkling water, or a mixed drink…. really, your imagination is the limit here.
Blueberry Stilton Vinaigrette
1 garlic clove micro planed
1 tsp. sea salt
Mash the two above ingredients into a puree and set aside.
1 ounce of blueberry Stilton cheese (or the Stilton of your choice)
½ C. Blueberry Basil Vinegar
½ C. Avocado oil
4 or 5 drops of Worcestershire sauce
And black pepper to taste
Combine Stilton and garlic and with a large fork.
Add the vinegar and Worcestershire sauce and blend with fork. Add the oil and blend again to incorporate it.
Pour into a jar and refrigerate until ready to serve. The Pixies served it over a salad made up of a butterleaf lettuce, shaved golden beets, arugula micro greens and maple pecans.

Adopting all the lost plants. Pixilated guide to gardening! #gardening #pixiespotager #gardeningtips
A good friend has taken to collecting 5 gallon bakery buckets for the Pixies ever expanding Potager experiment!
So we scrub them until all the remnants of the old occupant are gone, drill drainage holes, fill with organic soil and worm casings, and give our adopted plants a bed!
"There's always room for more." is the Pixie philosophy... until we run out of buckets!😉🤣Please consider subscribing and liking our channel as it helps us to grow....

As we expand the Potager, we also expand our experiments with electroculture.
This is the first time we've laid the seedlings directly over a copper wire who, in turn, is attached to our spiral antenna.
We shall see if this has any pronounced effect on the watermelon plants.
We have, however, made the Dragonflies happy by returning their antenna with the crystal on top to the approximate position it had occupied before...happy dragonfly=less mosquitoes....so we are all about making them happy!🤣

Our furry friend just realized he was not the only cat hanging out on the porch with his human friends this fine evening...
His curiosity about the tiny fuzzy creature was matched only by his concern for his own well-being, as the baby cat was loudly opinionated and obviously unstable...😉
Finnegan finally decided a human body guard was his best option, and he kept a close eye on the little creature from behind his human's legs...
One can not be too careful in these situations...
The Tiny One finally wore itself out, Finnegan casually dismissed his body guard, and balance and peace was restored to the Pixie's Potager...

In the corner of the Pixies, Potager sits an experiment in combining sacred geometry, electroculture, and classical music and frequencies... It has been named the Agora Spiral garden and us everyone's favorite space in the Potager...
The plants grow taller here, stronger, and are more sociable with one another... or so, it seems.
It's a curious thing how much nature loves particular geometry such as fractals and uses it to create absolutely everything.
And when nature is in harmony....it's contagious!

Experimenting with Electroculture in the Pixies Potager
The adventure of rewilding the Pixies has taken us down some very interesting paths of discovery and our experiment with the topic of Electroculture in the Pixies Potager has been at the top of that interesting list.
Nikola Tesla famously said that to discover the secrets of the universe, one must think in terms of energy, frequency, and vibration…
So, when we happened upon the concept of Electro-Culture it immediately intrigued us.
We set about investigating the veracity of its claims and attempting to create our own garden experiments using single strand solid copper wire fashioned into antennas, vortexed tepees and open sided copper collars.
We eagerly observed our garden “laboratory”, tending to our plants carefully and attempting to identify if there was anything to the controversial theory of harnessing atmospheric energy for the benefit of the garden.
It turns out that our plants were delighted with our energetic little project, and we were happily surprised by our quantifiable results!
I suspect that Nikola Tesla was correct and that what we don’t yet know, regarding the mysteries of our universe, far outweighs what we do know.
I also suspect that much of what we think we know doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of what is possible in our world.

An Unfortunate Tale of Multiplication or Planting Potatoes with the Pixies
If you, like the golden Pixie, have an aversion to all potato dishes that have not first required the cut-up tubers to be dipped into hot bubbling oil until crispy, before being served… it is probably best you avoid this video.
For the rest of us who love potatoes, I wonder if you have found that the bags of potatoes from the grocery store, as of late, have been determined to be plants and avoid ending up on our plates altogether.
Recently, in the little house where the Pixies live, we have found ourselves in an unwinnable race to get a bag of potatoes home and use them before they manage to turn a lovely shade of chartreuse and break out in sprouts all over.
The only thing we could think to do was to plant the little upstarts and let them do a little multiplication on their own…a math we could all get behind!

The Nonsense of Limiting the Potager and a Scandalous Snail Affair
Rewilding the Pixies means being willing to collect stray plants of every variety to add to the colorful collection of Leafy folks in the Pixies Potager. Any suggestion that the potager has limited space is met with immediate disapproval, as there is always room for more plants and such negative attitude has no place in the Pixies world.
After all variety is the spice of life!
Also, there was that ignominious decision by “yours truly” to attempt to rid the garden of snails via a rather antiquated method which went sideways almost immediately and led to the Pixies instituting a Snail Relocation and Rehabilitation process…. which is, shall we say…. thriving.
(No snails have been harmed in the making of this video…. however, some leaves have been turned into intricate lacey art projects by the wee villainous shelled folk.)
In the end perhaps the Bard expressed it best when he wrote in The Merchant of Venice,
“The quality of Mercy is not strained;
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest;
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes..”
However, I suspect he didn’t have snails in mind when he wrote these famous lines….
