How Do US Navy Sailors Protect Aircraft Carriers From Sharks?
US Navy sailors spend their time for months in the middle of the sea on a ship. But there are times when they have to go into the water. This is because they need to prepare for an emergency or to take a relaxing swim. Because there are sharks swimming there are also many sailors who do not participate in this because they consider it too dangerous. The US Navy has special methods to make sure their crew members are safe in the middle of the sea.
What happens when sharks swim too close to a US aircraft carrier?
When sailors are allowed to take a dive and jump off the ship, in Naval terminology it is called a "Swim call’’. As soon as the ship’s Commanding Officer checks the sea and gives the go-ahead, sailors jump off a lowered hangar bay elevator into the sea. Although relaxing, swim calls pose quite a risk to an aircraft carrier seeing as all of the ship’s operations are put on hold during this process. Anything can go wrong, from an enemy ship to a shark attack.
