Tiny Ranch

single chick hatched out on Jan 29. This is the first day mom has taken her out of the brooder for a walk in the yard and a bit of sun. it is still getting below freezing at night but mom is doing a great job keeping her baby warm.

I have a pack of coyotes hanging around the north end of the ranch. They are getting a little too bold so it's time to push them back onto the state trust land that butts up along my property. If they won't leave me and the boys will just have to take them out one at a time. There is an open bounty on them because they are a threat to the free ranging cows here. I'd leave them alone if they weren't also a threat to my chickens.

This hen thinks she is one of the dogs and gets in there with them when they get their dinner. The dogs pay her no mind at all.

It's getting below freezing at night but still into the 60's and 70's during the day. This is a tough place for European honey bees. There are a few species of native bee flies here which are pretty cool too. I put this feeder out to help the local bees get through the winter. My hope is that if they thrive there is a greater likelihood that they will swarm in the spring and I may be able to gather that swarm into a hive. It's a long shot.

Birds favorite perch is this juniper tree

This little guy is a silkie hybrid. The black and one white are pure silkie. The other white with normal feathers is another hybrid.

Anatolian Shepherd mother and Great Pyrenees father. Both born July 1. They were mostly around free ranging goats but they had exposure to chickens as well.

She caught it but lost part of it to another chicken.

All day long entertainment for kittens. Rufous and black chinned Hummers.
