Broadcasters Are Sending Station Logos Using ATSC 3.0
WTVJ in Miami, FL is sending TV channel logos over the air.
ATSC 3.0's EPG is way more sophisticated than ATSC 1.0. In addition to textual information, channel logos, preview clips, genre information, and other data can be broadcast over the air using ATSC 3.0.

OTA TV Bandscan In Western New York | Lockport, NY
In this video, I show the OTA TV stations that are receivable on a daily basis in Lockport, NY.
Equipment I used in the video:
- To tune the ATSC 1.0 and ATSC 3.0 signals, I used SiliconDust HDHomeRuns
- To decode the ATSC 1.0 and ATSC 3.0 signals, I used an app called Channels for HDHomeRun running on my M2 MacBook Air
- To show signal strength, signal quality, and symbol quality, I used the HDHomeRun Config GUI for Windows
The reception of these stations required dedicated HDHomeRun network connected tuners and dedicated antennas for specific TV bands and specific TV regions. The average OTA TV antenna user will not be receiving all of these stations simultaneously in this region.
The final cost of the HDHomeRuns, antennas, and other equipment was less than 2 years worth of a previous Spectrum cable TV bill.
You can monitor the reception of all of these stations in real time by visiting https://tropo.wnyovertheair.com

If Apple Buys ESPN, They Should Use ATSC 3.0 or 5G Broadcast
If Apple buys ESPN, I believe they should utilize over the air internet protocol (IP) broadcast and multicast technologies like ATSC 3.0 or 5G Broadcast to disperse live TV channels.

ATSC 3.0 Is Making ATSC 1.0 Worse
Since by law many ATSC 3.0 channels need to coexist with ATSC 1.0 for a set amount of time, both ATSC 1.0 and ATSC 3.0 have to fit in what’s left of the scarce public TV airwaves that was previously only made up of ATSC 1.0 stations. This creates a problem. How does a broadcaster keep ATSC 1.0 broadcasts on the air while broadcasting in ATSC 3.0?

How To Decode VVC/H.266 Video On A Mac
Versatile Video Coding, aka VVC, H.266, or MPEG-I Part 3, is a new video codec that was finalized in 2020. VVC has an encoding complexity of up to 10 times that of HEVC and a decoding complexity 2 times that of HEVC. I’ve had a lot of time to play around with VVC, and it is unbelievably efficient—standard definition video can be encoded to be as low as just a few dozen Kbps, and decent 4K video can be as low as just 4Mbps. This completely blows away the capabilities of HEVC and AV1. Since 2020, support for VVC in third party apps has been nearly nonexistent, until now.
In July of 2023, a great media player called Elmedia Player added support for VVC/H.266 video in their app for MacOS. This means right out of the box, this app can decode video encoded in VVC.
This video isn’t sponsored by the company behind this app, I just think it’s a great app for Mac users. Encoding video into VVC at the time of recording requires building your own app. Depending on how this video does, I’ll make a video in the future detailing how to build the Fraunhofer Versatile Video Encoder and how to encode video into VVC using command line prompts. Leave a comment below if you’d like to see that.

These Broadcasters Have Implemented DRM Encryption On Their ATSC 3.0 Channels
DRM Encryption is plaguing ATSC 3.0 stations all across America. At the time of recording, around 20% of the available ATSC 3.0 channels on the air in the United States have DRM Encryption, and that 20% comes from the same few broadcasters.
These broadcasters are Gray Television, Hearst Communications, The E. W. Scripps Company, TEGNA, TelevisaUnivision, NBCUniversal, and Paramount Global. These broadcasters have either all or a majority of their ATSC 3.0 channels encrypted with DRM. Now, there’s reports that Nexstar just started implementing DRM encryption with KARK NBC in Little Rock, Arkansas, and WFLA NBC in Tampa, FL. For now, these seem to be the only Nexstar channels that have DRM encryption.
If you have an ATSC 3.0 channel with DRM encryption in your area, at the time of recording, it’s coming from one of these companies.
Now, there are also many broadcasters who haven’t implemented DRM Encryption. These broadcasters are Nexstar Media Group (Besides KARK), Sinclair Broadcast Group, PBS Member Broadcasters, FOX Corporation, The Walt Disney Company, Allen Media Group, Hubbard Broadcasting, Cox Media Group, Graham Media Group, Franken FM broadcasters, and Low Power TV (LPTV) broadcasters, among others.
Even if some of these broadcasters decide to implement DRM Encryption later on, I applaud them for at least holding out until this DRM Encryption mess is settled. Right now, all external set top boxes that do support DRM Encryption require an internet connection. I guess certain companies don’t care if your internet goes out during a natural disaster, prohibiting you from accessing their broadcast.

5G Broadcast Is Coming To The United States
WWOO-LD received a STA from the FCC, not to use ATSC 1.0 or ATSC 3.0, but to use 5G Broadcast, the cellular industry's equivalent to ATSC 3.0. Allowing WWOO-LD to start using 5G Broadcast shows that the FCC is open to other broadcasting technologies that could be used on the public airwaves.

ATSC 3.0 Is The Internet, Without An Internet Connection
In an age where more people are looking at Elon Musk tweets rather than watching a conventional TV network like NBC, broadcasting additional data over-the-air along with TV and radio, could be the next generation of serving the public interest, using the public airwaves. While many people think of ATSC 3.0 as a broadcast TV standard, ATSC 3.0 at its root is simply a standard that broadcasts internet protocol data to the masses. Just like how you can stream live TV, load a weather app, and listen to podcasts using the internet, ATSC 3.0 could do the exact same thing, without an internet connection.

ATSC 3.0 On A Boat: Free Live TV Without Internet!
In this video, I'm in downtown Buffalo, where I'm testing WNYO-TV, the ATSC 3.0 lighthouse in Buffalo, NY, on the water in a boat. I test the over-the-air signal while going slow in Canalside, and going fast in Lake Erie.
Using free over-the-air TV in a boat has never been better. Since ATSC 3.0 is OFDM based, and since broadcasters are implementing their signals with multipath immunity (broadcasters can "turn off" multipath immunity with their ATSC 3.0 stations to make the signal slightly more robust but none of them are doing it), ATSC 3.0 signals don't suffer from multipath interference. This is great for applications like boats where you are constantly moving, or rocking up and down.
Since ATSC 3.0 uses the Internet Protocol (IP) to send data (like live TV channels), and doesn't require the internet, many boaters in remote areas could see live Internet Protocol information sent to their boat for the first time, using this technology.

Why DRM Encryption on ATSC 3.0 Is Bad
Recording over the air broadcasts is protected under the Supreme Court in the United States.
When this Supreme Court case was decided, consumers were using VCRs and VHS tapes to record Over the air NTSC broadcasts. In fact, as long as the tapes still play, a recording from many decades ago will still play today. ATSC 1.0 broadcasts can also be recorded to a universal format to be played anywhere.
If an ATSC 3.0 channel has encryption, like is the case with all of the channels on WTVJ in Miami, and channel 7 on WNYO in Buffalo, the recording will be laced with DRM. This means that playback of that file can only occur on an approved device. Essentially, a recording is tied to a device or an account. This means that if anything happened to that device, or if the company disappeared and no longer supports your account, you’re screwed. The recording that you’re entitled to from a broadcast on the public airwaves, would be unplayable, because of restrictions imposed by the broadcaster.
In order for an ATSC 3.0 device to support DRM, the device has to earn the NEXTGEN TV logo.

Star 102.5 Buffalo (WTSS-FM) Is Gone
Audacy filed to sell WTSS, along with WLFP in Memphis, Tennessee, to the Educational Media Foundation for $15.5 million in April 2023.
WMSX-FM 96.1, a Townsquare Media-owned station, has rebranded itself as "The New Star 96.1" in order to fill the Adult Contemporary gap in Buffalo.

How To Watch Local Channels Without Cable
According to Cord Cutters News, over 10,000 people a day are quitting cable, and for good reason. Cable is expensive, programming isn’t what it used to be, and these companies are hard to deal with. Many people still want to watch their favorite shows and sporting events that are on local channels, like NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, The CW and PBS, without paying the high price of cable TV. In this video, I'll explain a few of the best ways of getting these local channels without cable, and to save you money in the process.

ATSC 3.0 is Coming to Rochester, NY
On March 23, 2023 at 10 am, Rochester, NY’s first ever ATSC 3.0 signal will be on the air. Using Sinclair’s WUHF, Rochester will have ATSC 3.0 versions of its CBS, ABC, PBS, and FOX affiliates. In order to make this happen, channels that are currently on WUHF’s existing ATSC 1.0 signal will be added to various stations broadcasting on Pinnacle Hill. WUHF’s Fox Rochester will become a subchannel of Nexstar’s WROC-TV, Antenna TV and Comet TV will become subchannels of Sinclair’s WHAM-TV, and TBD will become a subchannel of WXXI’s WXXI-TV. Essentially, for having a broadcaster’s channel on the ATSC 3.0 signal, the agreement is the respective broadcaster will add a former WUHF subchannel to their station. This way, WUHF’s programming stays on the air in ATSC 1.0, and in return, these other broadcasters get their main channel on an ATSC 3.0 signal, in addition to their own ATSC 1.0 signals. The current ATSC 1.0 Rochester signals I receive in Niagara County, NY suffer from multipath fading, a phenomenon that plagues ATSC 1.0 signals. ATSC 3.0 fixes this by using OFDM for modulation. OFDM uses a guard interval, and has significant symbol multipath tolerance, compared to almost none from ATSC 1.0’s 8VSB modulation.
