Metal detecting for gold nuggets in between the spiky spinifex can reveal some nice surprises like today. The amount of gold I found in this spot within short time is a good reason to stay and look try and find more targets. Biting march flies don’t seem to agree. This area is full of surprises, the majority of the gold nuggets are shallow, only covered up by a thin layer of dirt. Unfortunately the gold doesn’t just pop up everywhere, it is hit or miss and walking around without getting a target all day is not a rare event. March flies are out in plentiful numbers. Sometimes I’m surprised by the targets that I find with my metal detector while out gold prospecting. Especially out here where you don't get many targets throughout the day. The conditions to go metal detecting are not ideal, storms move in almost every day and bring a lot of rain with them. The hours during which I can prospect for gold are limited, especially after a big downpour that causes flooding.
