Reflections: The Medium is the Message (And the Message doesn’t change). Excerpts from “The Social Church”, a theology of digital communication by Justin Wise. In his book Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man, Marshall McLuhan coined the phrase, “The Medium is the Message.” A statement that on the surface seems ridiculous and inane. What does it even mean? What medium? Which message? What’s the relationship? If the medium is the message, then how a message is conveyed must be considered, at least in some way, to be just as important as what the message is. It’s not just what you say, but it’s how you say it. McLuhan’s theory (if you could call it that) posits the medium one uses to communicate a message changes the inherent meaning of the message. Is There a Technical Culture? Excerpts from “The Technological Bluff” by Jacques Ellul Technique is here. It is everywhere. It is not represented merely by some useful objects. The whole field of computers is a challenge to our thinking. Are we able to think about the technical phenomenon? Are we able to think this “thought” of the computer? Can we continue to nurture culture on the ancient soil, a culture that can be popular (but the people have changed) or lofty (but does it not then lose its grip on reality and take refuge in dreams and ideas)? We have always conceived of what we call culture within and on the basis of our material, social, everyday, concrete world. Technique is here, it is our environment. Reflections. From Places to Non-Places: Excerpts from, “Non-Places,” Introduction to an Anthropology of Supermodernity by Marc Auge. It is my view that Satan's arrogance and animosity towards humanity, who was created in the image of God, motivates malevolent intentions to dismantle this concept and mislead individuals into perceiving their physical form as "non-place," a vacuous and lifeless receptacle lacking in essence and spirit. The phenomenon of persuading individuals to perceive themselves as not being created in the image of God, but rather as an entity separate from the divine, serves to elucidate the fundamental principles behind contemporary isms (Relativism, Atheism, nihilism, etc.) With this misguided understanding, Humanity then can be referred to as "non-placeless." Humanness as defined from a biblical worldview can be defined as the fundamental nature and essence of a human person made in the image of God. Defined as a ‘nonplace’ to be human is to be reduced to a deconstructed and inadequate entity. It is no more a space for the spirit, but rather a place where one can consume, extract, and diminish into a temporary vessel for economic profit, data consumption, uploaded consciousness, and irrelevant knowledge.
