The Bible teaches us that we should have a category for sinful actions, thoughts, and desires. Scripture also teaches us that we must have a category for wise and unwise. They are separate categories that must be handled in different ways, however, sometimes we get confused when trying to determine if something is sinful or unwise. Some people have such a hard time with this wise/unwise category that they begin to claim unwise actions are sinful. Are they right? Do unwise actions equal sinful ones? Slavery is a subject that carries a lot of baggage in modern society, and yet slavery still exists to a much larger degree than it ever has in human history. Most people would simply say that slavery is morally wrong and there is no discussion to be had. The issue is that the Bible not only does not give any sort of similar statement declaring slavery to be immorally wrong, but it even goes so far as to provide a robust code for how the Israelites were supposed to handle their own slaves. If the Bible does not out right condemn slavery, and even regulates slavery, should Christians condemn all forms of slavery as wrong? Are there certain forms of slavery that God does still view as immoral? How does our stance on this subject effect our ability to defend the inerrancy of Scripture? A recent argument against masculinity is the claim that masculinity is not one of the fruits of the Spirit and, therefore, not worth pursuing. Furthermore, some claim that there is no evidence of masculinity in the New Testament. Divorce has become a completely normal and acceptable option in marriages that are struggling. In the case of a marriage with an abusive husband divorce is not only acceptable but seen as the only option. However, the Bible only gives two reasons for divorce that are acceptable and physical abuse is noticeably missing from that list. Why is this? The Bible tells us many times of people who rebuked others. It even goes as far as to paint this rebuking in a positive light most of the time. However, our current society views rebuke as a bad word that you should never do. We view rebuke as unloving. Recently we ran a twitter poll asking whether or not a husband should rebuke his wife if she is obese. Many people who agree with us on many different issues voted yes, a husband should confront his wife for being obese. However, they added in the caveat that they didn't like the word rebuke and preferred confront or encourage. They felt that the word "rebuke" was too harsh. In light of that we wanted to have a discussion on this word and see if it is in fact too harsh or a word that we all need to reintroduce into our vocabulary.
