Coral Reef Rendezvous - Free Range Sailing Ep 63
Join us this week as we visit Broadhurst Reef on the Great Barrier Reef. The visibility was great and we were thrilled to see the corals in such good condition. We check the anchorage with our drone, go free diving and spearfishing followed by a rendezvous with Meg and Darren from SV Sarean.
Troy also shares a little information on some edible tropical fish, we teach you some squid secrets and Pascale prepares a couple of tasty pickled fish jars.

WE RUN AGROUND!!! (no big deal) - Free Range Sailing Ep 60
Entering the creek in beautiful Zoe Bay we run afoul of a sandbar. We talk you through what we did to come off the sandbar including the problems we encountered. We fly our drone for the first time to capture the spectacular scenery including the very strong tide ripping through our little anchorage! Our time at Zoe Bay ends with a visit Zoe Bay Falls where we get familiar with some of the freshwater jungle perch living in the freshwater pools.

How to Splice Rope Directly to Chain
Today we are looking at how to construct a rope to chain splice. There are a few techniques out there but we feel this one gives the neatest and strongest finish and is the one used by professionals. Modern anchor winches can often handle chain and rope combinations, though the use of a thimble and shackle to join them is precluded. If this is your case or you just want to learn a new skill, this video is for you!
We also give some insight into the use of stainless steel chain.
We are working on more instructional videos for you that will address rope skills and marlinspike seamanship, among other subjects. This is the first of them and we hope you find it useful in your adventures, no matter where they may be.

New York, London, Paris, Badu! - Free Range Sailing Ep 44
The people you meet are a big part of travelling so in this episode, we introduce more of the Artists of Badu, in the remote islands of the Torres Strait.
Their art combines many elements to tell stories of their past and present interaction with the natural world, all presented with a high level of skill that is being recognised by collectors around the world. We were taken so much by what we saw of it on Thursday Island that we decided to go miles out of our way to visit the centre and learn their motto-Though we're Small, We Aim High.
As our friendship grows, our new mate Joseph shares a few lessons with us and we get to see some of the techniques in use on Badu as well as take away a special memento of our visit.
For more information on the Badu Art Centre or, if, like us, you're interested in purchasing a piece of art, the full catalogue including the stories in respect of each piece is available at: https://www.baduartcentre.com.au/.

Keeping your Culture - Free Range Sailing Ep 43
We spend our last day on Thursday Island attending the Dawn Service and Parade for ANZAC Day before sailing to the island of Badu where we meet Councillor, Laurie and spend the day with his family on his beach camp. In this episode Pascale also shows you how to make your own yoghurt so it’s a plenty culture filled.

13:55 How We Make Yoghurt (recipe below)
Our Yoghurt Recipe
Equipment you'll need:
• A well insulated 1L yoghurt container which could be a wide-mouthed Thermos, an EsiYo Kit container or a wide-mouthed container placed in a warm place and wrapped in several blankets so it maintains warmth for at least 12 hours
• Thermometer
• Saniitser solution (We use our brewing sanitiser mix but 1 part bleach 50 parts water should be sufficient as well)
• Saucepan
• Spoon
• Whisk
Ingredients
• 2 ½ cups of Milk Powder (or 800mL fresh milk with ½ cup milk powder)
• 700mL sterilised water (to sterilise your water you can boil the night before)
• Yoghurt with alive cultures
Thoroughly clean your yoghurt container, whisk and spoon with warm soapy water and sterilise using sanitiser solution then set aside. To begin whisk the water with the milk powder in the saucepan. Using your thermometer and whisking to prevent the milk burning on the bottom of your saucepan heat the milk to 45 degrees. Once at 45 degrees turn off the heat and use your sanitised spoon to add 2 tablespoons of yoghurt to the milk. Stir well and then pour into your yoghurt container. Leave your filled container in a stable place for at least 12 hours. Then place in the fridge until cool.
To maintain the live yoghurt culture always serve your yoghurt with a clean, sanitised spoon and, as delicious as it is, don’t be tempted to eat it straight from the tub!
