The southwestern ridge bringing sweltering heat to the western United States will expand into the Great Lakes Region this week, bringing heat indexes near 110 in some spots. This expanding ridge will also be accompanied by severe weather potential, showing itself on Wednesday and also perhaps on Saturday. That stubborn pattern keeping the heat out west will bring back severe thunderstorms to the Great Lakes Region on Thursday. Currently, Eastern Indiana and Ohio appear to be showing stronger signals for severe weather Thursday afternoon. This pattern we have been stuck in may change later on in the month, with the possibility of a heat dome building into the CONUS, leading to widespread heat reaching into the western Great Lakes. The pattern we saw last week will persist into next week and perhaps through the beginning of August. Wildfire smoke from Canada will be pushed into the Great Lakes Region ahead of another low pressure system bringing thunderstorms back to the western Great Lakes Region. These storms will be isolated but could pack some damaging winds and hail. An unpredictable pattern precludes any certainty with the upcoming weather systems through the week, but the expected rainfall will lead to continuing drought relief across the area- except for northern Michigan.
