The progression of warm and cold air masses is going to continue through much of October across the Great Lakes Region with temperatures bouncing from abnormally warm to abnormally cold, accompanied by passing pressure systems that could favor some showers and thunderstorms. Severe weather potential appears low for Thursday but a brief severe thunderstorm can't be ruled out in the Great Lakes Region depending on the timing of the setup. A weakening upper-level low to the west will shift southeast towards our area on Monday. A few thunderstorms cannot be ruled out Tuesday and Wednesday- severe weather chance is low, but there may be an isolated potential developing in western Indiana Tuesday and Southern Ohio on Wednesday as a burst of mid-level winds could favor some stronger activity. Following the movement of this low will be a continuing warm, dry pattern, with current models favoring upper 70s through the first week of October. A strong cold front will move into the area tomorrow afternoon, but low wind shear will bring only the potential for damaging winds, strong lightning, and heavy rainfall. Lack of wind shear will inhibit tornado and hail potential should models continue their current trend. Behind this cold front, cooler weather will continue over the next couple of days as a dry cool air mass filters in. Some thunderstorms can be expected across Michigan and possibly parts of northern Indiana and Ohio tomorrow. Severe weather is unlikely due to lack of moisture content. Following Tuesday, a quieter pattern takes shape with little rain, despite increasing ridging in the upper levels causing gradual temperature rising. A heat wave is possible to begin September, although drier air will make it feel comfortable than last week's heat dome. An explosive severe thunderstorm environment will be in place across Lower Michigan, and development will occur this evening provided that a capping inversion will likely weaken ahead of an incoming cold front. These storms will be capable of significant damage with wind gusts possibly exceeding 75mph. This cold front will essentially end the dreaded heat wave across our region. A record-breaking heat dome is surging across the Midwest and will push into the Great Lakes on Wednesday. Widespread heat alerts have been issued across the region with the expectation that they will expand through Thursday. The edge of this heat dome will settle over eastern Michigan on Wednesday, fueling all-hazards severe weather if the capping inversion does not inhibit convection. A prolific ridge will surge and strengthen across the Plains during next week, causing a stagnant air mass to bake over much of the CONUS, including the Great Lakes Region. In some places, heat index values will surge past 110, depending on humidity that comes along with the ridge. Heat will likely be strongest Tuesday-Thursday, especially in Indiana. This heat wave will be followed by potential for thunderstorms, which will be closely monitored due to model disagreements.
