Afghanistan one year later: How Journalist Fatema Hosseini escaped Taliban
Today, she's a college student and an emerging U.S. journalist. She and her family are safely out of reach of the Taliban. But she is not at rest.
A year ago today, journalist Fatema Hosseini was crouched near a Taliban checkpoint at the Kabul airport, covered head to toe in a burqa, sweaty, dizzy and scared.
The Taliban had taken over Afghanistan's capital city four days earlier and masses of Afghans swarmed the airport, desperate for flights out. The Taliban guarding the gates said they would shoot anyone who stood. So Hosseini was duckwalking, trying to stay low but trying to push forward.
A tear gas canister landed in front of her. Tears filled her eyes; her head felt heavy. She was trapped in the middle of a large family. When people started running and pushing from the gas, she stood, too, and a man reached around and grabbed her between her legs. She froze. Bullets zipped over her head. A woman smacked her on the back and said: “Sit down! They’re going to shoot you!” Instead she stood taller and shouted, “I want to get out!”

Is polio back in USA ?
Why health experts think it's unlikely a polio case in the U.S. could lead to a country-wide outbreak like COVID-19.
In the early 1900s, up to 35,000 Americans a year were disabled by polio. The virus, which mainly spread during summer months, was finally tamed with a highly effective and widely embraced vaccine. For decades, transmission had disappeared in the United States. Until now.
New York reported a confirmed case of paralytic polio in July, and wastewater surveillance showed the virus may have been circulating in neighboring counties since April.
Health experts are calling it a “wake-up call,” but they don’t think the single case or subsequent viral detection will lead to a countrywide outbreak akin to COVID-19 or monkeypox, as over 90% of the country’s young children are vaccinated against polio. Experts, however, say pockets of unvaccinated people across the country may be at risk.
“What worries me is the communities where vaccination is suboptimal,” said Dr. Wafaa El-Sadr, professor of epidemiology and medicine at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. “It is in those communities where you’re likely to get spread rather than communities with coverage.”

Ukraine's Zelenskyy gets help from Turkey
No breakthroughs appear to have come out of a summit in Lviv, Ukraine, as the conflict with Russia approaches the six-month mark.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.N. head Antonio Guterres agreed Thursday on the terms of a trip by the International Atomic Energy Agency to the embattled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the presidential website said.
However, the plant has been under Russian control since early in the war, and it's not certain the Kremlin will accede to the visit. A Russian Foreign Ministry official rejected the notion of withdrawing troops, saying it would leave the plant “vulnerable.”
