Splendora, Texas – On August 23, 2022, Houston Police officers shot and killed a man, identified as 52-year-old Melvin Porter, that kidnapped 2 women. The kidnapping incident began on August 22, 2022, when Porter held his ex-girlfriend at gunpoint. He managed to get away after that.
The next day, he then reportedly went to his ex-girlfriend's job on Benmar Drive near City View Place and kidnapped her coworker.
“He wanted to talk to his ex-girlfriend and said, 'I have your co-worker,' in essence, as a hostage, and the female complainant, the ex-girlfriend, made a plan to meet and exchange herself so that her co-worker could go free," HPD Executive Chief Matt Slinkard said.
Once the ex-girlfriend met with Porter, she swapped places with her coworker and Porter made her drive his vehicle along Highway 59 North, HPD said. Police said they spent several hours trying to locate the Porter’s vehicle in hopes of finding the kidnapped ex-girlfriend.
Here's what is known about the double kidnapping:
During the drive, she made the brave decision to ask the suspect to stop and use the bathroom at a gas station near Splendora, hoping police would catch up to them. It worked as police said they located the suspect's vehicle at a Shell gas station and were able to surround his car before he could drive out of the parking lot. HPD said he ignored verbal commands and reached inside his car for a gun. That's when four officers shot at him.
Porter was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators said a gun was found near his body.
Splendora is located approximately 37 miles from Houston, Texas.

The deputies observed a parked vehicle in the parking lot occupied by a male and conducted a license plate check. The license plate return indicated it was a felony vehicle and the occupant was considered to be armed and dangerous. Additional details indicated 32-year-old Nicholas Hernandez, a known gang member, was wanted for assault with a firearm and discharging a firearm at an inhabited dwelling. This incident occurred in the city of Pico Rivera on December 11, 2021. The male inside the vehicle was later determined to be Nicholas Hernandez. Deputies initiated a vehicle pursuit of Hernandez for approximately twenty minutes. The pursuit led them from surface streets to the Interstate 5 freeway. Hernandez exited the Interstate 5 freeway, in the city of Downey and proceeded eastbound on Gallatin Road. As Hernandez turned south onto Downey & Sanford Bridge Road he lost control of his vehicle and collided with a civilian vehicle which was traveling north on Downey & Sanford Bridge Road. Hernandez then exited his vehicle and fled on foot. A Sheriff’s helicopter was overhead and directed the deputies to Hernandez, who was standing on the front porch of a residence in the 9500 block of Raviller Drive. While Hernandez stood facing the front door of the residence, several deputies attempted to detain him at gunpoint. Hernandez turned to face two deputies, pointed a handgun at them, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred. Hernandez was struck by gunfire and fell to the ground. Deputies approached and disarmed Hernandez, who was in possession of three handguns. Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics arrived at the location and rendered medical aid to Hernandez. Chattanooga, Tennessee - City Council candidate Marie Mott cursed police and claimed racism during a traffic stop on Cooley Street shortly before midnight on September 11, 2022.
Chattanooga Police said her 2004 Nissan Xterra was stopped because the front passenger light was not working. Ms. Mott "became agitated and aggressive" when she was asked for her driver's license, registration and proof of insurance. She said the light law violation was not a reason to be pulled over and was not a crime. She refused to hand over her registration and proof of insurance, saying police did not need it. She began yelling and cursing at police, saying police only initiated the traffic stop because “she was black.” Mott continued to yell from inside her vehicle. She asked a female officer who came to assist, "Who the f--k are you?"
Police cited Mott for a light law violation, failure to have insurance, and improper display of the tag.

Phoenix, Arizona – On August 28, 2022, a mass shooter opened fire at a north Phoenix hotel parking lot which left three people dead and five others hurt, including two police officers.
Video (some body cam) shows the suspect, later identified as 24-year-old Isiah Williams, leaving his room at Days Inn near 26th Avenue and Deer Valley Road on Aug. 28. He was wearing a helmet, a ballistic vest, a gas mask, knee pads and was armed with a rifle and a Molotov cocktail. When Williams goes outside, the video shows him firing at different cars. Thirty seconds into his shooting, he shoots at a white car that pulled into the parking lot, killing two people in the car. The victims were later identified as 44-year-old Karla Garzona and 36-year-old Misael Arevalo.
Three other people in the car get out and run off. Williams continues to walk around the parking lot, shooting at empty cars. He then throws the Molotov cocktail at a nearby Waffle House but the window didn’t break and the cocktail didn’t catch fire. He went back to the Days Inn front office, and aimed his gun inside but didn’t shoot anyone inside. For the next few minutes, he continues to fire his gun randomly with the bullets traveling across Deer Valley Road, hitting cars and buildings. Some people were hit and injured.
When police officers showed up, surveillance video shows they were met with a hail of gunfire. One officer was shot and another was hit with shrapnel in multiple places, including his face. One of the injured officers was pinned down by gunfire while others devised a plan to safely go rescue him. Unfortunately, officers didn’t activate their body cameras so there’s no video. Officers got the injured officer and loaded him into a police Tahoe and drove him to the hospital. When the shooting stopped, officers found Williams dead after he shot himself.
Investigators said they found 200 spent rifle rounds, five empty magazines, unused flashbangs, and other tactical equipment.
