Pinellas County, St. Petersburg, Florida – On October 2, 2022, at 3:36 a.m., a teen who was driving a stolen Maserati reached a top speed of 123 mph before the car crashed and killed one of his passengers.
At about 3:20 a.m. Sunday, a Pinellas Sheriff’s helicopter pilot alerted deputies on the ground that three teens walking along 62nd Avenue North had gotten into an unlocked 2016 silver Maserati near the intersection of 25th Street North. The keys had been left inside the car. Deputies drove behind and alongside the teens before turning on their emergency lights.
The driver rapidly accelerated shortly after and a sergeant told the deputies not to pursue. The teens reached speeds of 123 mph, Pinellas Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said, before the Maserati went airborne and crashed into the Great Wall and Cricket Wireless sign at 1024 62nd Avenue N.
One of the passengers, a 15-year-old boy, died at the scene. The other passenger, a 16-year-old boy, was seriously injured but has been stabilized, Gualtieri said Tuesday. The 15-year-old boy who was driving the stolen car remained in critical condition on Tuesday. Deputies found a .25-caliber, semi-automatic handgun in the Maserati that did not belong to the car’s owner.
The two surviving teens could face criminal charges, including grand theft auto. The driver could also face a third-degree felony murder charge.

McKinley County, New Mexico – On May 18, 2022, Robert Carroll was driving across New Mexico on his way from Kansas to Phoenix when he pulled off Interstate 40, just west of Gallup, and began acting erratically. A deputy with the McKinley County Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene. Bodycam video shows a deputy, Dwayne Holder, using a Taser on Carroll 18 times. Carroll lost consciousness and died at the scene. An autopsy determined his manner of death was homicide caused by heart disease in the setting of a physical restraint. Carroll’s family is suing the McKinley County Sheriff’s Office and board of commissioners, alleging that he was not a threat to the deputy and his “violent and abhorrent killing” was “wholly unjustified and constituted excessive force, assault, battery, and homicide.” The lawsuit also alleges Deputy Dwayne Holder, who chased and tased Carroll, was under the influence of alcohol. In his interview with New Mexico State Police, Holder said he had a shot and a half of bourbon about four hours before his shift began. “The death of Robert Carroll never should have occurred and would not have occurred but for a complete lack of officer supervision, lack of appropriate police training, and the lack of appropriate planning during the events leading up to the Tasing of Robert Carroll,” the lawsuit states. McKinley County is a county in the northwestern section of New Mexico bordering Arizona.

Las Cruces, New Mexico – On March 11, 2021, body cam video shows several officers delivering a large amount of lead at then-25-year-old Jonathan Lamar Strickland near the U.S. Post Office on Las Cruces Avenue in downtown Las Cruces. The incident left both Strickland and an officer injured.
Approximately an hour before the shooting, police bodycam video shows a domestic violence accuser arriving at the Las Cruces Police Department. Just before 8 a.m., the accuser told the officer that Strickland has threatened her life, strangled her, and that she feared for her safety. Shortly after, an orange truck arrives at the department. Officers said Strickland was inside of the vehicle. Police can be overheard in parts of the video explaining that he had three weapons, including two long guns and one handgun.
While the truck was parked at LCPD, officers decided to place several city buildings on lockdown, including the fire department. Officers evacuated parts of the police department and stood ready at the door with guns drawn, in the event that the suspect would approach the building.
When the driver of the orange truck left the police department, multiple officers engaged in a short pursuit that ended just near the U.S. Post Office where one officer wrecked his vehicle to the extent that airbags were deployed.
Body cam footage shows officers fired dozens of rounds at the suspect, many through a windshield with an AR-15 patterned rifle. After securing the scene, officers immediately gave him medical attention.

Hartford, Connecticut – On September 27, 2022, attorneys for a Connecticut man that was paralyzed in New Haven police custody on June 19, 2022 filed a $100 million lawsuit in federal court against New Haven and five police officers. Richard “Randy” Cox, 36, was arrested on a gun charge and was handcuffed in the back of a police van when the vehicle came to an abrupt stop (as seen in the body cam video). The vehicle did not have a seat belt, and Cox suffered significant injuries. Cox was later dragged from the van and placed in a holding cell for “10 to 15 minutes” before paramedics arrived. The collision left Cox with a fractured spine and “permanent paralysis below his neck,” among other medical issues, including contusions, scarring, a compromised immune system and permanent muscle atrophy, according to the suit. Cox’s lawyers, R.J. Weber III and Lou Rubano, filed a $100 million lawsuit against the city. The suit accuses five New Haven police officers of violating Cox’s Fourth and 14th Amendment rights.

Mesa, Arizona - The Mesa Police Department has charged 21-year-old Abdul Basit Ishan for his involvement in a home invasion burglary that escalated into a barricade situation with police and resulted in officers shooting the suspect on August 22, 2022. The shooting occurred near Country Club and Rio Salado Parkway in Mesa. Police said around 11:30 p.m., officers received a 911 call from a woman who said she returned home and noticed her front door was broken. The woman said she heard someone inside her house, so she backed out and called the police. Mesa PD said when officers arrived, the suspect ran out of the house, jumped a wall, and attempted to hide on a patio of a nearby apartment. Police say, after a short time, Ishan jumped another wall and hid inside a storage shed. Mesa police said they noticed he appeared to be holding a handgun. Police said after several hours of trying to get Ishan to come out, a robot and drone were deployed. Mesa PD says that Ishan fired additional shots at both devices. Less lethal measures were deployed, and when the suspect began to exit the shed, police say the officer-involved shooting occurred. After the shooting, officers took him into custody. Police say life-saving measures were administered, and he was transported to the hospital in critical condition. He faces over two dozen charges stemming from the incident, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and first-degree burglary, according to officials. Saginaw, Michigan – On March 28, 2022, around 7:15 p.m., Michigan State troopers noticed a red Pontiac Grand Am driven by 48-year-old Vance D. Martin turn onto eastbound Annesley Street at a high rate of speed. Troopers’ radar indicated the Pontiac was going 46 mph in a 25-mph zone. They pulled over the Martin on the 2300 block of Annesley Street after he failed to stop at two stop signs. Martin was uncooperative, failing to provide identification or step out of the Pontiac.
Martin eventually exited the car and troopers handcuffed his wrists behind his back. Troopers told Martin he was under arrest, but he then refused to be placed in the backseat of a patrol vehicle and tensed his body. One trooper tried pushing Martin into the patrol vehicle, but his efforts were ineffective. More troopers and two Saginaw police officers responded to the scene. Martin continued struggling against being arrested, to the point he struck the back of one trooper’s legs with his own.
Bodycam video shows a trooper delivering one straight punch to Martin’s face, which put him to sleep.
Officers requested Mobile Medical Response to the scene to evaluate Martin. Upon paramedics’ arrival, Martin declined medical attention. Troopers and officers then resumed trying to get Martin in a patrol vehicle, delivering knee-strikes to his legs and punches to his lower abdomen. Troopers wrote in the reports that Martin at one point put his right leg between a trooper’s legs and lightly struck his groin. The trooper then delivered four straight punches to Martin’s face, three of which connected.
Body cam video shows Martin gets put to sleep again and falls to the ground.
Troopers and officers were shortly thereafter able to pull and push Martin into a police car. Martin was taken to Covenant HealthCare hospital for an evaluation and a blood draw. Police then lodged Martin at the Saginaw County Jail on five counts of assaulting, resisting or obstructing police and single counts of operating while intoxicated and having an open intoxicant in a vehicle.
Inside Martin’s vehicle, police found a 12-ounce Michelob Ultra and a pint of Seagram’s vodka, both open, behind the driver’s seat......It's five o'clock somewhere!

Palm Coast, Florida – Around 10:35 p.m. on September 22, 2022, a driver who appeared drunk allegedly pointed a loaded gun at a Flagler County Sheriff’s deputy during a traffic stop on Palm Coast Parkway before complying with orders to drop the gun. It was the latest successful de-escalation of what could have resulted in a bloody shooting. Deputy West was patrolling the area of Palm Coast Parkway and Old Kings Road North in an unmarked agency vehicle when he saw a white Ford Fusion traveling east on the parkway and stopping at a red light on the crosswalk, rather than before the crosswalk. West activated the unmarked vehicle’s lights and began a traffic stop. When he approached the vehicle, the driver, 42-year-old Jason Keel said “I have a gun.” West held Keel at gunpoint until a Florida Highway Patrol trooper arrived at the scene and handcuffed him. Keel refused to submit to field sobriety exercises even after being cautioned that that would leave law enforcement to make its determination of impairment based on observations then and there. Keel still refused, was read his rights and asked for an attorney, shutting down any questioning. Keel showed obvious signs of intoxication - His speech was slurred - His eyes were bloodshot - He could not follow commands. Inside the vehicle a Glock 43 with a full magazine and a round in the chamber was found. Keel was arrested on charges of drunk driving, carrying a concealed firearm, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and committing a weapons offense while drunk. The aggravated assault charge is a second-degree felony. The concealed firearm charge is a third-degree felony. The others are misdemeanors. He was also issued a drunk driving citation. He remains at the county jail on $25,000 bond.

Mohave County, Kingman, Arizona – On September 22, 2022, the Mohave County Sheriff's Office released a small edited portion of bodycam video that captured a Kingman police officer fatally shooting a man on September 15, 2022 who fled from law enforcement after being stopped for outstanding arrest warrants. Police pulled over 36-year-old Marcus Fuentes on Sept. 15 at around 8:15 p.m. when Fuentes ran from his car leading to a foot chase. Police later found Fuentes hiding behind a pillar in the courtyard of a senior assisted living facility, the Sheriff's Office said. Body cam video shows officer Mike Morris aiming a suppressed AR-15 patterned rifle toward the pillar and ordering Fuentes to step out. Morris continues ordering Fuentes to come out with his hands up when Fuentes threatens to shoot himself. Video from Morris' bodycam shows Morris taking a few steps back and firing a single shot a few seconds after Fuentes' reply. Police say Fuentes "made a furtive movement," though Fuentes isn't in view of Morris' camera when Morris fires. Police rendered first-aid to Fuentes before he was transferred to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
