Legacy Conversations – SADF – OPS SUPER
OPS Super took place between 8 and 14 March 1982 in Namibe Province, southern Angola. Many say it was the most successful operation conducted by 32 Bn ever. It started with a Special Forces patrol finding the enemy, killing 9 and capturing 3 SWAPO soldiers. Not one escaped. The captured spoke about a terrorist base in the vicinity and the operation was on to find and destroy it…32 Bn was called in and Neil Ellis, commanding the gunships, won the HC during the battle. It was a continuous firefight taking hours and at extremely close range. This is the story of what happened that day told by Neall Ellis and two 32 Bn members, Kenneth Schwartz, and Piet Neethling. All did outstandingly well. There might be a follow-up episode on the battle in due course, from other 32 Bn members besides the ones above.

Legacy Conversations - Ops Super Group Discussion with Andrew Whitaker
A group discussion with veterans of the battle that took place on 13 March 1982, Neall Ellis, Kenny Schwartz, Piet Neethling and Peter Burley, together with a group of interested parties. A fascinating story with some light humour included, although that is in hindsight and was extremely serious on the day. If you have questions, leave them below. Legacy Conversations – Rick Lobb – 32 Bn Recce Wing
We speak to Sgt Rick Lobb. He started his career as a national serviceman in 4SAI before moving to the School of Infantry where he volunteered for 32 Battalion. Once there, he passed the 32 Bn Selection, then the Recce Wing Selection and went on many operations, some of which are described here including blowing a bridge behind enemy lines. Then Rick used an RPG-7 to shoot out an enemy truck during an ambush - the first to use the RPG like that in the unit. Since then, he is known also as “RPG.” Today he is a chemical engineer with an MBA degree owning his own company. If you have questions for Rick, please leave them below. Legacy Conversations – Ops Mamuandi - 8 Feb 1978 - 32Bn speaks
On 8 Feb 1978, a firefight took place close to Mamuandi, Angola, between 32Bn and SWAPOl, a place where more than one contact took place during the years. Overall, on the SADF side, 12 were killed in total - that is 6 on 8 February with another 2 KIA 2 years earlier and 4 a year earlier. We held a group discussion on the event. Martin Venter, a veteran of the operation, tells his story and the other guests are given the opportunity to ask questions. A fascinating discussion and a new format to consider for other operation anniversaries under the guidance of Legacy Presenter Andrew Whitaker.

Legacy Conversations – Martin Venter – 32 Bn’s 3 SAI’s “deserter” to the Rhodesian Light Infantry
We speak to Martin Venter. He started his army life with the Technical Service Corps (basics) and then to 3 SAI from where he and a few mates left to join the Rhodesian Light Infantry up north. After completing a parachute course in Bloemfontein, he was recognised as a South African Army “deserter” and sent back to South Africa where the Military Police waited. After a military trial and being sentenced to the DB for 21 days (suspended for two years) he found himself at 32 Battalion. Within days he was involved in the Battle of Eheke (Operation Kropduif) where Recce’s lost 7 men
(the most in one battle in their illustrious history). 32 Bn also had losses as well as the other units involved. Martin further explains that the Parabats never rescued 32 BN despite the rumours to the contrary, and much more. It is a fascinating story not to be missed.
