DA Steve Crump fumbles prosecution, 27 charges of child neglet dropped
Due to a flaw in the prosecution, a judge was forced to dismiss charges against a daycare worker who left 27 children alone in a fire.
--- More Details ---
On February 10th 2022 the Little Lambs Day Care in Cleveland, TN caught fire. When emergency responders arrived they found that the day care workers neglected to evacuate the children due to it being their "Nap Time".
Upon questioning, Day Care worker, James Carpenter admitted to having drank multiple shots of liquor and cans of beer that morning. Carpenter was arrested on 27 charges of child neglect and intoxication.
The state's prosecution attempt to argue that Carpenter was guilty under the Title 39 Child Abuse and Child Neglect or Endangerment statute:
"A parent or custodian of a child eight (8) years of age or less commits child endangerment who knowingly exposes such child to or knowingly fails to protect such child from abuse or neglect resulting in physical injury or imminent danger to the child. "
However, that statute also clearly states that:
" 'Parent or custodian' means the biological or adoptive parent or any person who has legal custody of the child. "
Judge Randolph was forced to dismiss the 27 charges of child neglect. Now, the prosecution must turn to the grand jury in an attempt to clean up the mess our District Attorney office has left us.

District Attorney Steve Crump called "Incompetent" on 48 Hours by Peter Van Sant
On a 2018 episode of 48 Hours, Peter Van Sant investigates a missing persons cold-case in Bradley County Tennessee. District Attorney General, Steve Crump leads the investigation.
After promising the victim's family justice, Crump worked with the TBI to collect a wealth of evidence against her husband (whom was previously charged with her murder but dropped). After charging the husband for a second time, Crump announced that he would drop the charges against him out of fears that he couldn't convince a judge to bring the case to trial.
This led to Sant interjecting: "... I just feel like there's some INCOMPETENCE here."
Crump not only failed to bring justice to the victim and her family, but he also sent a message to the world that one can possibly get away with murder under his watch.

Dana Cheatham Pritchard - Secret Recording alleging affair with DA Steve Crump
In 2017, John Loach secretly recorded Dana Cheatham Pritchard claiming that she had had an affair with Tennessee 10th Judicial District Attorney Steve Crump. Though this recording was submitted to the lead detective in the murder investigation of James Cheatham, John and Dana's half-brother, by his wife, Miranda Cheatham, it never made its way to the 2019 trial as evidence.
The 2019 trial resulted in the conviction of Miranda Cheatham for murdering her husband, James Cheatham.
When the existence of this recording was finally made aware to Miranda Cheatham's defense, it was recovered via a FOIA request and it sparked a motion for a new trial. The defense argued that Crump intentionally suppressed this to coverup his own wrongdoing and then lied to the public about being aware of its contents.

DA Steve Crump suppressed evidence implicating him in an affair and CAUGHT LYING to cover his tracks
Tennessee Tenth Judicial District Attorney General Steve Crump, accused of suppressing evidence of his own wrongdoing when a secret recording is recovered via a FOIA request.
The recording in question was of the siblings of a 2016 Cleveland, TN murder victim who alleged that one of them had had an affair with Mr. Crump and that they were blackmailing him in order to secure a conviction against the killer.
Though this recording was submitted to the lead detective of the investigation, it never made it to the 2019 trial as evidence.
When word finally broke out about the recording in 2020, Crump made an official statement to the Chattanooga Times Free press where he refuted the allegations of wrongdoing and claimed to have known about the existence of the recording but was not aware of its content, though a statement from the Cleveland Police Department tells a different story.
