Fact #9: Who was First Lady Martha Jefferson?
First Lady Martha Jefferson technically never made it to the White House - as she died nearly 20 years before her husband would become president. However, she is still regarded by many as a First Lady.
By the age of 19, Martha was already a widow. Just a few years later, her son would die. However, her life was about change.
That same year, she began courting her third cousin, Thomas Jefferson. In 1972 the couple married.
The pair would have 6 kids together. Only one child would make it past the age of 25.
Martha died only after 10 years of marriage to Thomas Jefferson. She made him promise not to remarry after her death, as she didn’t want anyone else raising her children.
Thomas Jefferson was a mess and went into hiding for a year after her death. Later, in his memoir, he would reminisce about his wife, saying, “I lost the cherished companion of my life in whose affections, unabated on both sides, I had lived the last ten years of my life in unchequered happiness.”
With no wife, Thomas Jefferson was a bachelor president. He asked the wife of his friend James Madison to fill in as White House hostess. For both of his terms, Dolley Madison was the unofficial First Lady.
Jefferson kept his promise and never remarried. However, DNA evidence shows that he had a least one illegitimate child with his half-sister in law, and slave, Sally Hemmings.

Fact #8: NASA Learns About Tampons
In 1983, America put its first woman in space - Sally Ride. As exciting as this was, NASA was confused at how to deal with lady business in outer space.
In fact, when the engineers were preparing for her flight, they asked her about how many tampons she would be needing, saying "is 100 the right number?" This goes to prove that no matter how smart a man may be, he will still have no clue about a woman’s body.
Sally Ride responded by just saying, "that would not be the right number.” The engineers replied by saying, "we just want to be safe."
Even better, the engineers tied the strings of the tampons together so they wouldn't float away. So, if you ever need a laugh, just imagine NASA engineers tying tampons together.

FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover had a firm rule against women becoming agents. However, when Hoover kicked the bucket in 1972, the agency changed its tune.
Enter 31 year-old Joanne Pierce Misko and 25 year-old Susan Roley Malone. Along with 43 men, they began special agent training in 1972.
These two women couldn’t be more different. Joanne was already working at the FBI, but before that had been a nun for a decade. Susan was a former U.S. Marine.
Joanne and Susan quickly became friends. During training, the pair lived together, worked out together, and proved the nay-sayers wrong. They had to meet the same requirements as the men … and they did.
Neither woman took the novelty of being the first female agents as a social cause. Years later, Joanne said, “I honestly didn’t see myself as a pioneer. It was just a role that I was fortunate enough to become a part of.” Susan has since said, “we wanted to be agents first. We just happened to be women.”
These women ended up working on some impressive cases - including the Patty Hearst kidnapping, the Reagan assassination, the Unabomber murders, and 9/11.
Adding female agents was more than being PC -it was needed . In the previous 4 years, the first 6 women made the FBI’s most wanted list. This feminine twist on crime was hard for the men. In fact, one woman on the list- Katherine Power - found it fairly easy to hide, saying, “the F.B.I. didn’t know how to take women seriously. They never had a clue.”
If you’re looking to learn more about the women on the FBI's most wanted list check out my other podcast channel, Ladies Love Crime on YouTube.

Fact #6: Who was First Lady Abigail Adams?
Abigail Adams became First Lady when her husband John Adams was elected president in 1797. She missed the celebration, however, as the harsh winter kept her from traveling to Philadelphia to attend his inauguration.
John Adams may have been president, but he relied heavily on his wife. In fact, he wrote her a letter saying “the times are critical and dangerous and I must have you here to assist me.”
She wasn’t just a docile housewife. John saw her as his equal in life and a valued advisor in his government career. This can be seen through the over 1,100 letters the two exchanged in their life. In these letters, they addressed each other as “my dearest friend.”
John’s diplomatic work meant the couple spent many years separated and these letters are what helped keep them connected. They spoke oo everything, from the constitution to human rights.
In fact, Abigail was staunchly opposed to slavery and was an early fan of abolition.
She also was an advocate of women’s rights. In her most famous letter to her husband, she warned him that the new American government must “ remember the ladies and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the husbands. Remember, all men would be tyrants if they could.”
Abigail is also in rare company. Her son John Quincy Adams eventually became president, too -making her just one of two First Ladies to be both the wife and mother of a president - the other being Barbara Bush.

Fact #5: How Jiu Jitsu Helped Women Earn the Right to Vote?
In 1908, British activist Edith Margaret Garrud, along with her wrestling and boxing instructor husband, ran a martial arts studio in London where they taught jiu-jitsu to women in the suffragist movement.
Men were invited to stop by and challenge her. She had them wear a police hat and then unleash her fury. Although she was 46 years old and stood just 4’ 11”, she was able to knock these men flat on their back.
Her classes became increasingly popular, helping empower women in the movement. Before long, they became known as “suffrajitsu.”
While it seems strange, self-defense was greatly needed. Police were becoming more and more aggressive in their attempts to stop the movement.
Together about 30 little ladies formed a group called the Bodyguard to provide protection for their leader Edith. They hid weapons - like clubs and flower pots -in their dresses and created armor with cardboard and cotton padding.
These women were known to create scuffles on the streets then zip back to the studio to hide their bats under the floor. When the police got there, it looked as if it was just an exercise class. The media dubbed these women “The Amazons.” Whenever Edith needed their help they were there.
On one occasion, they stood guard during a speech Edith was giving. Before long, police descended on the stage. The women started pulling out barbed wire they had hidden in the bouquets and tangled the officers.

Martha is described as being strong-willed and warm – but she was also short, standing only 5 feet tall. She was a 27 year old widow when she married George Washington and had already had 2 children. Fact #4: Frances Perkins was the first female cabinet member
In 1933, Frances Perkins was appointed the Secretary of Labor - making her the first female cabinet member. She graduated from college in 1902 - a time when less than 3% of American women attended college. After getting her masters degree in political science, she worked for the New York City Consumers’ League to investigate working conditions in factories. She went on to become the top administrator for New York’s Department of Labor.
During her career, Frances kept a journal called “Notes on the Male Mind.” She would log her insights on male preferences and expectations - using it to manipulate gender stereotypes.
Frances also wore matronly clothing. She did so because it reminded them of their mothers - that way she could shame them into doing things her way. It was less threatening to men and far more effective.
While Labor Secretary she helped formulate the New Deal, establish Social Security, worker’s compensation, unemployment insurance, maternal and child health-services, and aid to the poor and disabled. She also helped Jewish children escape the Nazi’s - placing nearly 400 in American foster families.

Did you know that Congress didn’t allow women to wear pants in Congress until the 90s?
The first woman to break tradition was Republican Representative Charlotte T. Reid, who walked into the House wearing a black wool, bell-bottomed pantsuit. It was rather jarring -with one congressman telling Rep. Reid, “I was told there was a lady here in trousers, so I had to come over and see for myself.” She says all the men she talked to were complimentary of her choice. Minority Leader Gerald Ford even told her she should wear them more often.
It wasn’t until the 70’s that government agencies, like the State Department and the Pentagon, allowed women to wear pants. F.B.I. Director J. Edgar Hoover hated pants so much it wasn’t until he died in 1972 that women were allowed to wear britches.
The Senate was more of an uphill battle. While there was no written rule against wearing pants, Senate doorkeepers were allowed to turn away anyone that was deemed inappropriate. Hence, a de-facto pants ban for women.
Democratic Senator Carol Moseley-Braun was the first woman to challenge that unwritten rule. She says when she strutted into the chamber in 1993 that “the gasps were audible.” A short time later, the Senate got their first female Sergeant of Arms who adopted written rules allowing women to wear pants.
And of course, we couldn't have a discussion of pantsuits without mentioning HIllary Clinton. In fact, she was the first and only First Lady to wear pants in her official White House portrait.
Now that you know where we’ve been, find out where we're going. Tune into Ladies Love Politics where you can stay informed without going insane.

Jeannette Rankin was elected to the House of Representatives in 1916 - four years before women even had the right to vote in America.
Before becoming the first broad in broad in Congress, she was a social worker and activist in the women’s suffrage movement - helping to secure women the right to vote in Montana. During her first term as a congresswomen, she decided to run for Senate but lost because she opposed entering World War I. She became a lobbyist and a social worker before winning her seat back in 1940. Yet again, the U.S. was gearing up to enter war. Jeannette Rankin maintained her anti-war stance, making her the only member of Congress to have voted against both World Wars.
