The Zvartes Rock is one of the most popular and scenic sandstone outcrops in Latvia. It is located on the left bank of the Amata River in the Gauja National Park.
The rock has been named after a nearby farmstead, Zvartes, which was torn down after World War II. Now a visitor center has been built there.
The Zvartes Rock and its neighborhood offer great opportunities for leisure activities to be enjoyed by the whole family, a group of classmates or friends. There are several picnic areas for the convenience of visitors.
Also in the vicinity, one can take a look at Raganu Plavina (The Witches’ Meadow) and the Miglas Rock.
From there you can go on a short walk along the Amata River to the Veclaucu Bridge and back.
When boating enthusiasts flock to the Amata during springtime floods, the Zvartes Rock is an excellent vantage point to observe their activities.
Amata Trail
From the Zvartes Rock, one can take shorter or longer hiking trips on the trail along the Amata River from Melturi to where the Amata flows into the Gauja River. The Amata Valley is rich in dolomite and sandstone outcrops, beautiful scenery and diversity of flora and fauna. Except for the Zvartes Rock, other geological formations can only be seen by walking along the Amata Trail from Melturi to the Veclaucu Bridge or taking a boat ride on the river.

Cecīļi Nature Trail is a walking route for tourists, where you can get to know Amata County nature objects along the banks of Kumada and Dančupīte Rivers.
Cecīļi Nature Trail starts at Ieriķi, Amata County, 1 km from the cafe and Cecīļi Nature Trail Tourist Information Point, at the house “Lejas Cecīļi”. The visitors have the chance to enjoy the nature untouched by the human – Dančupīte River Canyon, Dančupīte Cave, a miniature waterfall, the impressive Cecīļi Rock from the right bank of Kumada River, Cecīļi Pine, which is one of Latvia’s secular trees, as well as other objects. The trail is marked.
At the beginning of the trail there is an animal feeder, where you can see forest animals from a quite closely. We suggest bringing a small treat that you can leave in the feeder. If there are no animals around, it is possible to look at animal traces and guess which animal they belong to.
There is a legend that the devil with two witches lived in Cecīļi Rock Caves. Every midnight they danced in front of the rock. The people annoyed the devil, so he wanted to fill up the Kumada River. He took the sand and brought it to the river. Suddenly a rooster began to sing. The devil got scared and ran to the cave. The sand was scattered at the “Velna kambaris” (“Devil’s Chamber”) rock and formed a hillock. The devil has not been seen since then.
Cecīļi Nature Trail starts at Ieriķi, Amata County, 1 km from the Cecīļi Nature Trail Tourist Information Point. The trail includes various routes and four rivers.
The trail is available at all seasons.

The Sietiniezis Rock is one of the highest white sandstone outcrops in Latvia, being 15 meters high and around 0.5 kilometers long. It is situated on the right bank of the Gauja River between Valmiera and Janmuiza about 2 kilometers downstream from Liepas Rock.
There are numerous insect aisles dotting the rock, making it look like a sieve, hence its name (sietins is the Latvian word for ‘a sieve’).
One can enjoy a view on the Gauja Valley from the southern part of Sietiniezis, and there are scenic pine forests surrounding the rock. You will find small caves and grottos, as well as gullies and pillar-like formations.
There are trails and picnic areas in the vicinity of Sietiniezis for the purposes of nature protection and for the convenience of visitors.
The Gauja River hits the northern part of Sietiniezis and makes a turn. Looking from the river, the rock rises nearly vertically at the base to form a concave slope towards the top. It is 200 meters long and about 13 meters high, with pale yellow sandstone of the Gauja Formation exposed up to 6 meters from the water level.

The circumference of the stem is 9,2-9.4 m, high is 16-17 m, the crown projection is 19.5 × 19 m. This is the second largest giant oak, both in Latvia and in the Baltic. The tree is believed to be around 800 years old.
Several centuries ago, perhaps in the 19 th century, a lightning strike has been struck in the Kanepju giant oak, this formed a large cavity in which 8 people can fit in. The cavity has three entrances— a big gap in the north, a small gap in the south, the third opening is up against the sky.
This is believed that this oak has been a sacred oak.

The Cīrulīši nature trails at Cēsis reveal the history of the Gauja River and its surrounding nature. What are the origins of the river? What kind of plants used to grow here? Who were the first inhabitants? Satisfy your curiosity on a leisurely stroll through this fabled place admired by people from all around the world.
The Gauja River with its swift and changing flow reflects the characteristics of the local people — spite, strength and raw beauty. The river is mentioned in countless folk songs and tales. The word has it that the Devil himself detested the river, yet its unyielding nature allowed it overcome the obstacles set by the Devil and eventually reach the sea.
The Cīrulīši Nature trails along the Gauja River captivate with their unusual relief and the diversity of nature. Here you can see many interesting nature objects.
Cīrulīšu Cave seems to lead to the very pit of the earth. Whereas Līgavas (Bride’s) Cave, or Sarkanā (Red) Cave, witnessed true love when a young man hid his bride in this very cave during the Livonian War.
An interesting natural formation is the Gauja oxbow lake which is a meander of the river that has been cut off from the main stream over the years. Spoguļu (Mirror) Cliffs, or Cīrulīšu Cliffs, which beautifully reflect in the water of the oxbow lake, are a truly magnificent sight.
Right next to Spoguļu Cliffs you can taste the water of Dzidravots Spring, which oozes out right from the cliffs and has been renowned for hundreds of years for being exceptionally clear (water is not for drinking).
On your walk you will see various tree species in different types of forests and an astounding natural phenomenon — a spruce and a pine intertwined into a single tree! You will also see the fascinating homes of beavers and ants along the way. Here you will walk in step with pure and untouched nature!
The Gaujaslīči Section of the Cīrulīši Nature Trails, winding through the small streets and paths along the River Gauja, will allow you to get acquainted with the natural heritage, habitats, plant species included in the Red Book of Latvia (endangered species), wooden architecture and cultural landscape.
Enjoy the splendour of all four seasons on the banks of the River Gauja!

The Holy Spring Cave is the first cave in Latvia mentioned in scientific literature. Already in 1764 it was examined by ethnographer G. F. Millers. He wrote that SE of Cēsis from some sandstone niche a spring flew out that already since pagan times had been a favourite sacrificial site and was visited by superstitious afflicted peasants (S. Laime, 2009). Measurements taken in 1972 showed that the depth of the cave is 13 m, width of 4 m and it starts from a large niche, the height of which is 4.7 m. Deeper to the right in the cliff, a curved crack stretches, the height of which is 3 m and width of 1 m. A small entrance is also in the left side of the niche (alas.lv, 2009b). The water of the Holy Spring that is non-freezing in winter contains a lot of iron compounds. It flows out from a depth of 88 m in a clean, large, natural, white sand rock. Now the Holy Spring is located in a private territory, and in 2000 the land owner bricked up the entrance into the cave, but the spring water is sold. The ravine is facilitated (alas.lv, 2009b, ER; SIA Amber Storm, 1993–2011). Nearby is the Cīrulīši Nature Trail, the Bride’s (Red) Cave (Līgavas (sarkanā) ala), Mirror Cliffs (Spoguļu klintis).

The Sarkanās (Red) Cliffs are situated on the massif of the right bank of Gauja river, approximately 0.5km from the old Lieplejas, or Raiskuma inn up to the Gauja river.
The cliffs stretch for several hundred metres and have a reddish colour which led to naming them “Red” Cliffs. The cliffs contain cracks that cleave reddish rocks, creating an unusual natural work of art. Their surface is rather indented, forming small caves and niches in the cliffs. Sandy rock band breaks as the middle that divides the spectacular cliffs of two parts.
Several springs flow out of the cliff and one of them is named Rūcamavots (Roaring spring) that breaks out of the cliffs with a kind of noise.
Red Cliffs is a protected natural geological monument in the Gauja National Park. A well-maintained trail is stretching up to the spring and forth along the bottom edge of the cliff. There is a small parking lot at the beginning of a trail.

Swedish pine is nationally protected nature monument and its circumference is 3,2 metres. As it is known from an old tale - the pine was planted by Swedish king the other way around - the roots were up in the air. Some say you can see the same king, floating in a boat deep in his thoughts, in the lake next to the pine, when the evening fog is out.
