Map 2 of Sigil 2 has the first timed secret of the wad. Just like in Doom 2 Map 27, "Monster Condo", one of the secret areas will close off for good after the first 30 seconds. And in this case, you'll need to get that secret in order to safely reach another secret and to safely open another secret. There is a loophole around this, though. If you're inside the secret when it closes off, you can reopen it from the inside, and it won't close back up. It's Thursday, which means time for more Team Battles in F-Zero 99. This time around I had two extremely close wins by 33 and 17 points, and there was also another battle where I won the race, but my team overall got crushed. In Team Battle, the 99 racers are divided into two teams: the Green Team and the Pink Team. Here, finishing in 1st place is only part of the battle. There are four different ways to score for your team in this mode. You score Spin Points by simply hitting players on the enemy team with your Spin Attack. You score KO Points by delivering the killing blow on an enemy player (the max energy bonus from KOs applies to all members of your team in this mode). You score Bumper Points by getting a Lucky Bumper after getting KO'd and bumping into enemy racers (so you can still help your team from the grave). You score Lap Points depending on your current position at the end of each lap (obviously the higher your position the more points you score). After the race, the total scores in all four categories for each team are added together, and the team with the highest combined score is the winner. With the end of one Doom add-on comes the beginning of another, and this one was just released onto the Unity port yesterday in honor of Doom's 30th anniversary! Welcome to Sigil 2! Sigil 2 is the follow-up to John Romero's previous 25th-anniversary special episode Sigil, made in honor of Doom's 30th anniversary. Like the first Sigil, Sigil 2 has two separate soundtracks for the standalone PC release: a MIDI soundtrack by James Paddock (the featured soundtrack in the Unity Add-on release), and an original soundtrack by Bryant "Thorr" Lowry (as opposed to Buckethead who did the original soundtrack for the first Sigil). Like the first Sigil, Sigil 2 is a standard-length Doom 1-style episode, with 8 regular levels and 1 secret level. While the first Sigil was billed as an unofficial "Episode 5" of Ultimate Doom, Sigil 2 is likewise billed as "Episode 6", with the maps being labeled E6M1, E6M2, etc. This wad is billed as being nastier than the first Sigil, with enemy encounters over precarious lava pits, and a Cyberdemon on every level on the harder difficulties (Ultra-Violence and up)! Honestly, the hardest part of this wad is just getting your foot in the door on the first map. This ranks right up there with "Shadow Port" from Back To Saturn X Episode 2 as the most brutal first map I've ever played in a Doom wad! And of course it wouldn't be a John Romero map without a crapton of secrets! After returning to the Mushroom Kingdom after retrieving Mallow's stolen coin, we find the place invaded by enemy forces! Now it's time to take down their boss, who goes by a different name from the original SNES version. In the SNES version, the first major boss was known as Mack, but the Switch remake calls him Claymorton. I don't know if Claymorton was the boss's original Japanese name while he was renamed Mack in the North American release as a reference to Mack The Knife, or whatever. This time, we'll have to wait another week to do our Squidmas shopping because the Salmonids have invaded Barnacle & Dime! With the new season update also comes a new King Salmonid! The ravenous Megalodontia makes his debut appearance in this Big Run! You know the Family Guy joke about Bigger Jaws? Well, Megalodontia is basically Bigger Maws. It targets one player at a time (indicated by a crosshair on that player), then a massive circular area will light up around that player and a couple seconds later Megalodontia will surface. This thing is the biggest King Salmonid yet, but it does have a weak spot: the red bulge with an X on its back. One other important thing to note is that Megalodontia also eats any Boss Salmonid in its massive bite radius, so whoever is being targeted may want to go where the bosses are to make some extra ammo appear. This Big Run also marks a change in the reward system. Previously, rewards were based on your ranking compared to the rest of the player base. But as of Version 6.0.0, rewards are now based on preset egg totals announced in the Anarchy Splatcast at the start of the Big Run. Map 6 of Syringe is the final stage, and it is one of the most eerie and disturbing Doom maps I've played so far! There are four separate sections: one involving precarious platforming, one involving crushers, one involving combat against Revenants and Cacodemons in a glitchy arena with no cover, and the last section has you fighting two Spider Masterminds and two Cyberdemons in an area where you can barely even see them because it's so dark! With my 2nd Quest playthrough of Epic Battle Fantasy 4 finished, I thought I'd take a break before my Final Chapter (3rd Quest) playthrough to play another RPG I've wanted to play on this channel for a long time but never got around to. But with the newly-released remake on Nintendo Switch, now seems like the perfect time! Welcome to Mario's very first foray into the JRPG genre, aptly named Super Mario RPG! Originally released on SNES in 1996, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars was co-developed by Nintendo and Square Enix as one of the last games released on the console. It follows typical RPG format with exploration, a rich story, turn-based battles, the works. However, it also adds the new "Timed Hits" mechanic, where if you hit the button at the right time, you can make your attacks more powerful as well as reduce or even negate damage from most enemy attacks. The most common complaint about RPGs is the grind, but this particular RPG does not require any grinding, though it does put more importance on the timing system. The Nintendo Switch remake released on November 17, 2023, and added many quality of life improvements, including an indicator over your character's head indicating the timing to do a timed attack or defense during an attack, as well as an indicator telling you when an enemy attack can't be blocked. It also adds a new type of attack called the Triple Attack, which you can charge up with successful Timed Hits. Which Triple Attack you use depends on your current party setup. It also adds some post-game content with much more difficult rematches against certain bosses. The story starts out like any Mario game. Princess Peach gets kidnapped by Bowser, and Mario goes to Bowser's castle to save her. However, during the battle, a giant sword crashes from the sky into the castle, sending Mario, Bowser, and Peach off in different directions and destroying the bridge to the castle. So now Mario must take the long way around. Map 3 of Syringe marks our exit from Hell and our entrance into...Brazil? Anyway, Map 3 is definitely the hardest map so far! Revenants and Chaingunners from all sides just to start, booby-trapped power-ups, Revenants and Arch-Viles galore at the end, and a Red Key trap that has ended a great many runs for me on this map. It's not nearly as insane as the red key trap from Back To Saturn X E1M24, but it's still quite hectic trying to fend off a massive circle of Imps and Shotgunners with you in the dead center. Map 30 of Anomaly Report is the grand finale, and unlike most final maps, there is a bloody battle ahead just to get to the Icon of Sin! In order to even get to the thing, you have to fight through an open battlefield with four Spider Masterminds and a Cyberdemon to get to the other building to get the three keys, then run back to the other side to hit the switches to lower the barriers blocking your line of fire to the Icon of Sin, then take the teleporter in the center of the battlefield to where you can shoot it. While all this is going on, the Icon is infinitely spawning more enemies to make your life hell! Good thing there's a near-endless supply of BFG ammo! After gaining entry into the Dark Player Cave, it's now time to rematch the Dark Players! Since I failed to take them down with all challenges on in my first playthrough, I'm redeeming myself this time! Next up is Dark Lance, who, unlike Dark Anna and Dark Natalie, is NOT immune to poison! Combine that with the Debuff Trifecta to keep Dark Lance down as much as possible. The hardest part of this fight comes from three things. First, all of Dark Lance's regular shots have a chance to inflict instant death, so Death resistance is a must. Second, Dark Lance's Lock On ability maxes out his attack power (both physical and magic) and accuracy with a 70% resistance to Dispel as well. Halloween is fast approaching, and with it comes a very special Splatoween Splatfest! This time, the question is which undead creature would make the best friend: a Zombie, a Skeleton, or a Ghost? I think Casper already has that question answered... Also, since this is a special holiday-themed Splatfest, some Halloween-themed gear and a new Halloween-themed banner are available through the Nintendo Switch news feed! This was a rough Splatfest, but I did manage one 10x win against Zombies. I cycled between three different weapons.
